Country Boarding Kennels

My dog Stanley stayed at Country Boarding Kennels over the holidays and had a great time. This was…read morehis second time staying there and this experience was just as great as the first time. First, the kennels and facility are immaculate. Also, Carol Ann and her staff are friendly and hardworking. Stanley was originally wait listed for a spot because we waited too long to make our holiday boarding reservations. Luckily, room opened up for Stan because I wouldn't have felt as comfortable leaving him somewhere else. Carol Ann went above and beyond to make our reservation happen and make my holiday trip to visit family possible. This was even more impressive because two days earlier I learned that my dog would need surgery to have a tumor removed. I was panicked and worried but Carol Ann assured me Stanley would be in good hands. She played nurse for us while we were away. They made sure Stan got his medication and was comfortable. They made sure I was comfortable by being able to call and talk to someone if I was worried. In addition to boarding for your cats and dogs, they have grooming services. I won't hesitate the next time I need to board Stan. I could tell by the number of family Christmas cards they get from customers that they probably don't need any more good reviews. Nonetheless, I highly recommend Country Boarding Kennels.

I tried to get my dog Geoffrey into this Doggie Day Care facility. It was an unbelievable…read moreexperience. The first day I called, they asked what breed he was and how old was he. I told them he's a German Shepherd and I didn't know exactly how old he was as he was a rescue. She said they'd call me back. They didn't. So I called again the next day and the girl on the other end started asking the same questions. I told her I'd already been through that. She told me I'd have to get a letter of reference from whatever shelter or rescue he came from. This seemed odd as I never had to do this with my other dog, also a rescued German Shepherd, at this place or at Wags and Wiggles in Tustin, CA or at Camp Bow Wow in New Orleans. I've never heard of this being a requirement ANYWHERE. So I called the director of German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County, and she shot off an email outlining his background and attesting to his sterling character that same day and which I forwarded to them immediately. So the next day I waited. And waited. At 1PM I called them. I told the girl they had received the required reference email. She told me that the manager hadn't read her email yet. Say what??? How would the girl behind the counter know whether or not the manager in her office had read her email? And it was 1PM and they open at 7AM. So again I was blown off. I suspected that this was a case of discrimination. So I called a friend and asked her to call and say she wanted to put her dog in their day care. I told her to tell them what I had told them except say her dog was a Golden Retriever. She did and the girl told her they'd be happy to set up an appointment right then and there. Infuriated, I called again and said I wanted to speak with the manager. The girl said: "Oh...this is Claire... " I said yes this is Claire and I want to speak to the manager!!! She put me on hold for about 5 minutes. Then the manager came on and said that she had received the email from GSROC and told me we could come in for our "evaluation" at noon the following Thursday. I'm thinking they believed requiring a letter of reference from a shelter or rescue would stop me dead in my tracks. Most public shelters are too big and busy to do this. Probably many rescues as well. They didn't bank on GSROC being as classy and professional as they are or that I volunteered with them for years. So now after all of this hassle and marching into a brick wall, I canceled our "evaluation" appointment. They only gave it to me because they knew I wasn't going to let it rest, and it's likely they'd reject my dog regardless over whatever preconceived prejudicial issues they obviously have. Shortly after, I took Geoffrey to Paws Plaza. No appointment was necessary. He was welcome anytime. They do an "integration" with new dogs which I'm sure is much like Santa Fe Tail's "evaluation" but it just sounds more accurate and less pompous. The people were very nice, he passed with flying colors and had a great time. I was very impressed with this place! Dealing with Santa Fe Tails had been such a negative experience. I would never do business or entrust my dogs to them again. And as far as Joey P.'s worn out rebuttal to their many negative reviews: "SF Tails does not feel Yelp is the most productive platform for communication and encourage all of our clients, current or potential, to interact with us directly so we can continue to cultivate a positive experience." I DID interact directly which is precisely WHY it was such a bad experience!

Looked up local doggy daycare places. Zoomies has a great rating. Called, set up appointment, brought in my dog for eval and he played for 4 hours while I explored the town. Pros: Spoke to friendly & knowledgeable staff to book the eval. Booked it same day, called at 8am and went there around 1030am. Set up an online account and signed the waiver before arrival. Easy and quick behavior evaluation of my dog before acceptance into play group. Able to pay for 1/2 day rate which was affordable. Staff seemed very caring about the dogs. Many regulars dropped off their dogs while I waited for my pup to join, and the staff greeted them by name and dogs looked happy to be there. Cons: None noted, if pressed for a con I would say I don't like the cleaning product they use for the kennel, had a strong "chemically" smell but I would rather they clean it than have it be a strong dog smell.

Downside is that there is no way to see dogs. Used to have an entrance on the front where there was a little window to get at least a glimpse but they moved the entrance to the back where nothing can be viewed. I also asked to upload photos so I can see her. Last time the desk person said the message was passed on. When I picked Zoey up, I asked about photos and they paused then said they were TOO BUSY.
