Real old school Taiji taught by one of the old masters. Not for the faint-hearted as the martial side is emphasised. Really exceptionally tough work out. The only authentic Taiji class I have encountered in the UK. read more

But compared to the best Mei Quan is quite shallow despite the glitzy image. Run as a business, you never get to see the head honcho unless you're deemed "special". So i'm a bit of a gym rat / fitness freak and i've been going to this gym since I moved to the area…read moreabout a year ago. It's in a great area and the best thing is that it's open 24 hours a day, which is perfect for me. Over the last few years, due to the recession, we have seen a lot of these cheap gym chains sprouting up and I usually go with the saying 'you get what you pay for'. Now where that's usually proved me right for the most part, it's completely untrue with this gym chain. Monthly rates are dirt cheap, usually around £20 and the gym has everything you could want and need in a gym - state of the art equipment, full range of free weights, stretching areas, changing rooms, classes and PT sessions. Notice I said gym and not HEALTH CLUB. When I go to the gym I like to TRAIN not swim, jacuzzi, play tennis, steam room, spa or play tennis. If that's what you want then this place is not for you, as it hasn't got any of them and you want somewhere like VIRGIN ACTIVE or DAVID LLOYD and the price that comes with it (upwards of £65 per month plus joining fee). When I joined this gym I was shocked at how cheap it was a month as I would have gladly paid double every month as that's what I was expecting to pay at least. It's clean, nicely decorated and has everything you would need and more in a gym. A few recommendations - - Take full advantage of the 24 hour services. I would say to not train after work 6-10pm on weekdays as you will not be able to do what you need to do in less than 2 hours so you may as well not have gone. I go before work during the week and sometimes at weekends and have no problem using the equipment I need. - They don't have a wide range of classes so take a look at what they have on the website and see if they do things you like if thats a factor for you. - Don't get PT sessions here. I've trained athletes and know bad trainers when I see them. Apart from a few, most of the trainers here recycle their sessions and don't make sure their clients are doing the exercises correctly. I think they care more about their money than helping them. Or if you do want sessions here send me a message and i'll recommend the good ones and I promise I don't know any of them personally to just be giving them your business! Apart from those minor points if you live local and are looking for a gym I thoroughly recommend this place!

Always has been clean for me, and the other patrons are a nice cross-section (read: not full of gym rats). PT professionals I have not seen to be amazing for the price - they seem more just like the contractors who didn't have a job elsewhere - and they cost 50 to 80 an hour typically. Better to head to Pure Fitness or to another big London PT house for that price (and maybe get medical insurance to cover it). The nautilus machines and free weights are plentiful during non-peak hours, though can get a bit crowded with the afterwork crowd. Either way, the gym is great value for money if you're within walking distance.

I have been learning Tai Chi from Tanaz for over a year. Though for work reasons my attendance is…read morespotty at times, I have still benefited from the emphasis on applied principles, and how they lead to both physical focus and mindfulness. I have practiced kung fu in the past, and still practice some of my basics - Tai Chi has helped me to make a transition to a more integrated, balanced approach to martial arts, including the importance of relaxation and mind-body integration, and of balance and rootedness (and exploiting or creating weaknesses therein within the opponent). And the class is not just about forms and health - we also practice how to apply the foundations, relying on principles and sensitivity to guide fluid responses in mutually respectful partner work. The class is multi-faceted and appeals on several layers. It is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with no "military drill", and while students can take on as much or as little serious exercise as befits their age and health, the full curriculum offers a very good workout (and I speak from the perspective of having had the usual horse stance treatments inherent in kung fu learning). There is a strong emphasis on foundations - this is not a quick fix "here is the form" kind of class, and students should be prepared to enjoy the journey itself, which I feel is the principal benefit.

Given that he's mastered so many styles of martial arts, from China, India and Thailand, there will be something here for everyone. I moved to London 6 years ago, and started training in Wing Chun at schools across London. Last year I moved to Croydon, and after looking around several schools, I decided to join Kung Fu Schools. This decision was taken due to the extremely friendly and professional nature of the schools instructors and students, and the fact that school caters for each individual students very varying needs. Since joining the school I have met and enjoyed some training with Chief Instructor Sifu Paul Hawkes, who has trained with Masters & Grand Masters such as James Sinclair, Lung Ting and Sergio Iadarola who is head of the IWKA. The instructors at the school love there chosen martial arts discipline and have trained and learnt there craft from all around the world. The massive enthusiasm generated by the instructors is injected into the training, which makes it a such a great experience for all, and makes me, keep coming back for more. The best school by a country mile, that I have attended, and I have trained at many, over my 26 years in martial arts(probably more expert than most). I would like to thank Kung Fu Schools for organising an excellent Self Awareness Seminar at the weekend

With a good number of females and beginners, there is no reason not to give this a try if you are looking to get fit regardless of age, sex or current fitness level. The old saying of 'I'm not fit enough to go to a class yet,' will not wash and is quite frankly an awful excuse. There is a full sized ring, numerous punch, kick and elbow bags and plenty of long pads for partner work. The instruction is thorough and as all Thai boxing schools should be, very tough. There are several full time Muay Thai gyms in London, and I would certainly class Minotaurs as well as KO and Scorpions among the best for churning out good fighters.

The instructors ensure that students are comfortable at all times and there is always a lot of attention on students learning, which i really appreciate.
