I have been learning Tai Chi from Tanaz for over a year. Though for work reasons my attendance is spotty at times, I have still benefited from the emphasis on applied principles, and how they lead to both physical focus and mindfulness. I have practiced kung fu in the past, and still practice some of my basics - Tai Chi has helped me to make a transition to a more integrated, balanced approach to martial arts, including the importance of relaxation and mind-body integration, and of balance and rootedness (and exploiting or creating weaknesses therein within the opponent). And the class is not just about forms and health - we also practice how to apply the foundations, relying on principles and sensitivity to guide fluid responses in mutually respectful partner work. The class is multi-faceted and appeals on several layers. It is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with no "military drill", and while students can take on as much or as little serious exercise as befits their age and health, the full curriculum offers a very good workout (and I speak from the perspective of having had the usual horse stance treatments inherent in kung fu learning). There is a strong emphasis on foundations - this is not a quick fix "here is the form" kind of class, and students should be prepared to enjoy the journey itself, which I feel is the principal benefit. read more
