This is always an interesting day in Austria. Each year on the last Sunday in September, Austria celebrates "Der Tag des Denkmals" (Day of the Memorials). There are tours and visits possible to scores of buildings and places which usually aren't open to the general public. Each year has a theme and this year it was monuments in stone. Many thousands of people take advantage of this day to learn more about their heritage. Especially in Vienna is the program really strong with about forty offerings.
Just to give an indication of the range of possibilities on Tag des Denkmals, permit me to just list the places in Vienna I stopped by today for a tour (guided or self-guided). 1) The influential jugendstil Zacherlhaus designed by Josef Plecnik 2) a visit inside the Virgilkapelle below the Stephansplatz 3) The Habsburg wine kellers underneath the Hofburg Palace 4) The Vienna Bridge Club in a cool jugendstil setting with a great view 5) A unique surviving Baroque pharmacy in St. Elisabeth's Hospital ... and 6) A tour of the amazing Karl-Marx-Hof.
I saw so many cool things in this city with a tremendous heritage ... and I learned a lot. Hey and everything is totally free!! If you can, def try to catch it next year and I think you'll find several interesting sites to check out. read more
