This church is pretty, although not nearly as grand or interesting as most of the other churches in Vienna. But the main draw at Augustinerkirche is not the interior; it's the symphonic mass at 11:00 AM on Sundays, which I had heard only glowing praises about from TripAdvisor and other sources. People absolutely raved about it, saying it was like a professional concert, and one of the best things they did in Vienna, and so beautiful they cried, etc. People also said to arrive early to be sure of a seat.
I visited in July, and arrived at 10:30 AM. I was there too early; I could have easily found a seat arriving much closer to 11:00. The mass wasn't bad, exactly -- but it was not really anything very special, either, as the reviews had made it seem. It was a very typical mass, with nicer than average orchestral music for the prelude/offertory/hymns. The service is all in German (obviously), including a longish sermon. It was also blazing hot inside, but that's to be expected in Vienna in July.
We heard a brass quartet; the music (both the pieces and instruments/voices they use) varies from one week to the next, so maybe I went on an off week.
If you're Catholic, or if you like Catholic services, this would be a good one to go to. But I would not recommend going just for the music. read more
