No sir, I won't be the one to break this string of 5-star reviews. A few single words why the food here rocks: flavor, value, presentation. All first-rate. Three tacos for $7 may sound a tad pricey compared to say what you might get in KC but I wouldn't call these traditional Mexican tacos so they're sort of in a league of their own. Had the braised lamb, pork and chorizo. Three small single tacos, single wrapped minus the typical onion and cilantro which again shows they're doing their own thing. Spectacular bites, and while not alot, the rich flavor and depth has you reminding yourself 30 minutes later what they served was just right. Must return again soon to see what else they do. I love tacos, guys, and these were no exception. My boyfriend and I went and shared a taco plate (one steak, one bean, and one chorizo taco) and nachos (half chicken, half steak). I can't decide which filling I like best, but they're all very flavorful and cooked well. I love the pickled onions and slices of sweet potato on the side too. We also tried the Jamaican tea and the cucumber mint lime juice. The employees were nice and helpful since it was our first time in. I'll be back! read more

Auténtico! Authentic Southern Cali Mexican anyway. A great addition to the Lawrence culinary scene. There is a wide selection of fillings, meats and vegetarian. $7 is the magic number, so your pocketbook will thank you. If it matters, the pork is less spicy, the Lengua and beef more spicy. Green chile chorizo taco is the best one. The tacos weren't notable and the horchata was gross. The tacos were too soft. They need more crunch and brightness. The pickled veg were lovely. My verdict.... Try the nachos they look yummier. read more

The best thing about the Taco Zone was the cute redhead working the front counter. Other than that, the green hot sauce was ok, but the pork burrito was far away from being anything Mexican, although it was wrapped in a tortilla. The pictures on Yelp were nothing like what I received, no pickled carrots, no cilantro and onions, hopefully the cook was having a bad night and this isn't the way it always is. I love this place. The tacos are made fresh, with top notch ingredients, and the escabeche is a super nice touch. Try the juices.. the Jamaican Hibiscus Flower Tea is highly recommended.. and all of the employees are nice and cool and seem to genuinely care about your food and experience. Best place for a good sized, reasonably priced and delicious lunch. Had the Mac and cheese with green chile chicken, creamy and with the chicken mixed in rather than just set on top. Walked here when I was in Lawrence for the night, and enjoyed the salad and tacos that I ordered. It's a bit pricey, but the food is unique and nicely done. I can't say much for the ambiance... it's a little spartan, but that serves the restaurant well and the staff was very pleasant. I have been here three times and all three times there were new flavors for tacos that were incredible and not something you will ever find anywhere else. Ingredients are super fresh, prices very reasonable for the quality. I had a chicken chipotle with black bean taco that was heaven. I didn't know about Taco Zone until it moved to the location on 8th street but now that I know about it I will not soon forget! I went there one time with a friend before Christmas and we were very impressed with the food that we received. So impressed in fact that we went back to Taco Zone today and were happily surprised to find out that it was Taco Tuesday!!! Only $5.00 for three yummy tacos! The food is spectacular! Everything we've tried has been delicious and very flavorful! We really enjoyed the roasted pork and chicken tinga. In my opinion this is the best taco shop in Lawrence and the only place you can go for nearly gourmet food and a reasonable price. I wish this restaurant much success and hope that it becomes a Lawrence staple. The quality of the food is top notch. The simple menu is built around a list of seven or eight "fillings" and these are creative and change up from time to time. Hot sauce is HOT. If ordering the tacos (three mexican style open tacos on a single soft corn tortilla) each is constructed and topped with painstaking care. Hungry? Burrito. Looking for a change? Torta. Some pickled carrots are a nice little mini-side. Homemade beverages (a summery mint lime cucumber thing, hortacha, and a purple tart fruit thing) add extra variety to the soft drinks. Very good joint! Small, low key and keeps it simple. I had the tacos (3 tacos for $7). I had chicken, pork chop, and something else...so good. The nachos looked like the bomb. I had chips and queso. The queso was meh, but the chips were crunchy heavily fried deliciousness without being greasy. I also had the housemade horchata. It wasn't as sweet as I've had at Mexican joints and it had an extra texture at the bottom (maybe rice granules--IDK). I wouldn't order it again, but I would definitely try another one of their aqua frescas. Oh yes, and half price margs on Fridays!? Genius! read more

This place is straight up terrible. I would wager that they serve better tacos in Prague. Not only do they have limited ingredients but Taco Zone does not know how to mix what they do have to serve. The guacamole was flavorless which is what happens when you only put avocados in it. It's hard to fathom how this place is rated as high as it is. You can't go wrong. It's all great. Go for the lamb if they offer it when you're there. Happy hour gets $2 tacos from 3-5 Tuesday through Friday. I'd say more, but it's not necessary. They're that good. read more

Really liked the cochinita tacos here! I like the whole concept of Mexican street tacos and Agua frescas (will be back to try these)! I also like the bar style and the prices. I also tried the chorizo taco which was ok. I ordered the lengua taco to try it. While it was moist and well-cooked I couldn't get the image of cow tongue out of my head. When I heard about this place, I had to try it. I wanted to love it and I did. I tried the queso, pico and guac with some house made chips that were absolute perfection. I could drink the queso and eat the guac with a spoon. It got even better when the tacos arrived. I had green chile chorizo, beef and mushroom and pork al pastor. I can't decide which was best. This place is a traditional taqueria-style taco shop with everything slow-braised, including tongue ("lengua")! Almost everything is gluten-free since they use corn chips for the nachos and corn tortillas for the tacos. The food is delicious for meat-eaters and herbivores alike. I went to Taco Zone on a Friday with my boyfriend and we both got orders of the Nacho Royales with Pork Chop simmered in Verde sauce as our filling. I love Taco Zone, but this filling choice fell flat for me. The tomatillo verde suace lacked flavor, it was mostly just acidic. But the chips and queso sauce were to die for.
