I saw The Taco Shoppe - one of the first review I read explained how the taco stand was no longer in Indiana Beach/ but had opened shop 1 mile from where I was! Trust me I knew this was the place for me!!! Anyone that has been to Indiana Beach must remember these delicious tacos! They are nothing fancy/ just ground beef lettuce snd cheese- with the AMAZING taco sauce! You order at a Windiw- pick up at the next- there are a few picnic tables. There's something to be said about knowing your strengths and understanding your clientele. If you've ever been to Indiana Beach on Lake Shafer, you've probably had tacos from the now closed Taco Shoppe. It was a staple for years at the amusement park, and gained such a following that when they closed a few years back, their regulars (myself included) were devastated. So much so that the owners decided to re-open the business about three miles away in downtown Monticello, IN. The recipe for their success is a simple one. Keep the menu simple. Find a niche product that differentiates your establishment from the dozens of other taco joints in the area and only open for a select amount of time so that you always leave them wanting more. The Taco Shoppe is a carry-out only and has no inside seating at all. In fact, there's no "inside" of the business. You order from one window and pick up your food from another. There's a handful of picnic tables in the lot next door, but that's it. So what's the secret??? Tough to describe. First of all, the soft shell corn tortillas are flash fried, maybe?!? Whatever they do to them, they are delicious. Their ground beef is also kind of a mystery. It's unlike any beef taco I've had before, and my fat ass has had PLENTY of tacos in my 52 years. They serve the tacos with red sauce (mild) and green sauce (hot). They are both amazing. Their red sauce is on the sweeter side, and I can't compare it to anything else really... My boyfriend hyped up these tacos over the years because they brought him fond childhood memories, so I had to check them out for myself. No doubt, the tacos are tasty. The corn shells are deep fried (I believe) because there was some oil left on the wrappers. The only meat option is beef, and it's ground beef, not the steak variety. The meat is seasoned, mild, tender and tasty. The taco sauce is a mildly spicy red tomato-based topping that I believe comes standard. They also come served with a lovely crumbled cheese that is light and creamy. I can understand why my boyfriend has fond memories of these tacos as they were probably very delicious to him as a 12 year old boy. I think he enjoyed them in a slightly different way this time around because they fulfilled a nostalgia desire. I bet one of these tacos would be a snack time spot hitter at Indiana Beach. I am not sure that if I lived in the area that I'd drop in for lunch on a random Tuesday, but I would definitely go back with my kids and their friends and give them another go next time we're in town. read more

My girlfriend raved about how wonderful these tacos are so I had to try them. Those tacos are Fire lol. Very unique as the shells are thin and deep fried I think... but surprisingly filled with a substantial amount of meat and a distinct sauce and crumbly cheese. Truly don't get the hype. These are like generic tacos that people make at home.. maybe a step above with a freshly fried shell, but very, very bland. The sauce on top is weirdly sweet with no spice at all. The meat is kind of mushy and not a ton of flavor. Best part is the cheese and lettuce..lol. RIP, after 50 plus years the last taco has been handed through the window of what I would consider one of the best food stands in the state of Indiana. Sadly the Taco Stand at Indiana Beach closed for good on September 3rd, 2018. I was there on this hot and steamy afternoon as a few rain drops started to drop from the sky and the owner came out to announce they were out of tacos. I was about twelve back in line as the line somewhat reluctantly began to disperse. This was not totally new to me as I had in the past grabbed the last tacos of the night before venturing up to the iconic Roof Garden Lounge. If the Taco Stand was out of tacos I could typically grab a couple of spanish dogs at another iconic Indiana Beach stand, the Pronto Pup which is located just below the bar. I've not had the closing of a favorite eatery impact me like this for quite some time, reminds me of the closing of the legendary but long gone Toot's at Central and Montrose on Chicago's Northwest side. Do I dare mention both in the same sentence, I think it's appropriate. Rest in Peace Taco Stand, all in all it really was quite a run. read more

This is a bit of a nostalgia review. I haven't been there for over two decades, but I can still remember exactly what the tacos taste like here. Down to the sauce and the crispy crunch of the taco shell (partially soaked by the grease of the meat--and totally not in a bad way), the cheese and the lettuce... plain addictive. There aren't too many foods with that kind of exact taste memory/recall. So it's not authentic if you're looking for that (which may be why people are put off by the world's greatest taco statements), but it is perfect for amusement park food. Back in 1970 when my then boyfriend (now husband) and I went to the beach is when I got hooked on Taco Shoppe taco's! We went to the beach all the time... "just for taco's"! I love those taco's so much and still crave them today...2021! When I was pregnant for my son,(1972) we "had to" drive from Rochester to the beach just for taco's, I craved them all the time. Our second baby (1975) we moved back to Logansport closer to the beach, ha, still had to go get them taco's. Got the kids into taco's, they loved then. When they quit at the beach (taco stand was beach's "BEST" place to eat!) I was shocked, no more beach! Am glad to find out Taco Shoppe is still there in Monticello' so will try to get there myself. Kids grown, grandchildren grew up and great grandchildren live far away... have memories for all the years of the beach, the Taco Shoppe was always our first stop! Who could just walk by that smell? mmmmm so good!! I can't even make good taco's good at home, ha.
