Very disappointing experience - not the professional diagnostic promised…read more I booked my car in with VolcanMotors for what was clearly advertised and verbally confirmed as a professional and detailed diagnostic. When I made the booking, the owner assured me they would carry out proper due diligence and identify the root cause of the issue. Unfortunately, the experience fell far short of that expectation. After a few hours, I was told the "diagnostic" had been done using a diagnostic machine only, with no meaningful additional investigation. There was no visual inspection, no deeper fault-finding, and no attempt to properly validate the issue. They simply repeated the same fault code information I was already aware of. Based on this very superficial check, they quickly recommended a major and expensive repair -- without demonstrating any thorough analysis to justify it. When I asked reasonable questions to understand their process and reasoning, I was met with a rude and dismissive attitude rather than a professional explanation. What's most disappointing is not just the lack of diagnosis, but the lack of honesty and professionalism. If the garage does not have the expertise, time, or willingness to properly diagnose a vehicle, it would be far more professional to say so upfront rather than provide a costly recommendation based on a basic scan. I trusted them to treat both the job and me as a customer with professionalism and respect. Instead, I received neither. I would not return to this garage and would not trust their diagnostic conclusions.

I would recommend Hilsea Tyres from Portsmouth.. I can't…read morepraise the two fitters Dan and Harley enough. They were very polite and professional. And even though I wasn't the original call out, I asked if they could help me out with a punctured tyre I had. They agreed and after they finished with their original call out, they both came over to help me. It Involved removing my wheel. And had to be taken back to their place of work to fix, plus bringing it back. The price quoted for all this was the price I was charged. There were no hidden charges and price was very responsible. They got me back on the road within a half hour or so. Dan and Harley saved me a lot of bother and headache. I thank them for their help.

Incidentally the MOT was done by P Goodspeed of M & N Autos of HIlsea, and not Hilsea Tyres, although their website suggests they do MOTs (presumably they are not a registered MOT tester). Only 6 weeks later, another car repair garage identified very serious corrosion in the rear subframe, advised me that the car was unsafe to drive, and should have failed the MOT. They could not understand how the problem was not identified by the MOT tester. When I complained, a Bob Weir from Hilsea Tyres has consistently denied that they (or the MOT tester) were responsible for the error, preferring to try to blame the other garage for damaging the subframe, which is ridiculous when the problem was serious corrosion which would have developed over time. I would never have authorised them to go ahead with the repairs & service they did do if I'd known about the subframe as well, as it would have cost more than the car is worth.

DO NOT USE! Stay well away! In my opinion…read more Did the exact opposite of what I asked them to do, were unable to fix the mistakes they made and put me at risk of a fine and penalty points on my license. I booked my car in for a pre-MOT one month prior to my current MOT's expiration date. This was done so I would know of any problems well in advance and have a month to fix them - plus it also looks better on the cars history, in my opinion. It was clearly explained multiple times when I first called, and again when I dropped off the vehicle, that it must NOT be put in for MOT if there were any advisories/issues. This was the main and only stipulation. I received a call after the pre-MOT had apparently been carried out stating there were a few issues, such as the "fog light isn't red" and an oil leak. After explaining how to operate a fog light switch, which coincidentally is situated in the factory position on the dashboard (strange that), it dawned on me they were probably looking at my reverse light (At this point I reiterated again that the car was NOT to be put through the MOT if there were any issues, and have witnesses as proof). This conversation was extremely disconcerting, as one would have thought a professional garage would know how to operate something as simple as a light switch, and in over a decade of owning the same model car I can honestly say I have never had this issue anywhere else before. Hours passed, I checked the DVLA website and, to my utter horror, it had failed with multiple "major defects", one being the fog light placement and the front headlights, none of which were picked up on the pre-MOT. I can't understand how a light socket put in by the manufacturer over 20 years ago suddenly decided to up & move itself to another position on the car! Also, none of the "issues" they had found on the pre-MOT came up on the MOT, bar one numberplate bulb! So what had they done in the pre-MOT test!? Despite the absolute absurdity (at least to me) of some of the failures, and the fact they had clearly done the complete opposite of what I asked them to do in the first place, I was now left in an extremely bad situation. I use my car to commute to work every day and with a failed MOT I'm now unable to drive it. If I cant get to work I can't earn money. If I can't earn money I can't repair the car. If I cant repair the car there's a possibility of losing my job!! When I mentioned this to the gentleman he said I could drive the car. I then questioned the legality and was told "it's a grey area" and, "if I was stopped and didn't have the car booked in for repair I could be liable" - for a fine and penalty points. Obviously not wanting this to happen I then asked what needed to be done to get the car up to "standard" and was told, "we dont know how to repair it" and, "we can't repair it", so I am now left with an undrivable vehicle and am unable to get to work without, so far as I'm aware, risking prosecution. After a long discussion they admitted they were at fault and said they would waive the cost, but could not reverse or fix what they had done. I am extremely unhappy and dissatisfied with the level of professionalism and service I received, and will be taking this up with the relevant authorities. I can't stress enough, DO NOT USE THIS GARAGE!!! In my opinion.

Fields offer an excellent auto service, MOT and bodywork. They are reasonably priced and the work is carried out to a good standard. They subscribe to various consumer schemes. It is possible to have a while you wait service although the waiting area is limited and is in an almost portacabin-style area. Reading matter is provided but unless Autotrader is your thing. There's no real viewing area although access to the garage can be arranged. If you don't want to wait in situ there's a bus stop not far down the road or you could wander to Morissons coffee shop or the nearby History museum. Parking by the garage can be an issue and so expect to shunt around. Staff are very helpful when it comes to leaving and, if you need assistance or want your car turned in a very tight space they'll do it for you! Recommended.
