    Selected Shorts Program

I've been a member of Symphony Space for years. Their programming is amazing. If you enjoy Selected Shorts on NPR or on Apple Podcasts this is where the majority of live ones are recorded. They also have wonderful programs around film, literature, art, theatre, music, and dance.

I've been to Symphony Space a few times for the free The Orchestra Now (TON) concerts. It's a little disorganized; at first I was told I didn't need a ticket and then I had to wait on a long line a second time to get one. The crowd skews to older (say retirement age) and entitled UWS types, but there are young people and middle aged folks too. All of the orchestra seats have good views and the acoustics are fantastic. I've only sat at the floor level, but the small balcony looks cute too. The bathrooms are clean and the line moves surprisingly quickly. It's a great space to hear music.

My Grandfather Leonard Harper got inducted into the Tap City Hall of Fame. All had a wonderful time. Great Tap dancing. I wished the night could go on with the fascinating rhythm.

Symphony Space is a wonderful not for profit venue. They hosted a special performance I attended. What a wonderful evening. The employees were organized and on schedule for our large group. The lobby and theater are beautiful and clean. You won't see dirty seats with tatters here. Very well maintained comfortable environment. I was so relieved during the performance that the theater was a perfect temperature. I was afraid I would either freeze, or worse, burn up from the heat. Seating is perfect for viewing a live stage performance. Not that I'm an expert. I was there early and found a great seat. My daughter joined me and conveniently sat in the aisle seat. When the show was over the isles are spacious enough that we quickly exited to the street. The seats are not like a Broadway Theater, where you're cramped. It felt like a comfortable movie theater. I was really pleased with my evening at Symphony Space. I'm looking forward to attending more shows. I'm sure I'll check their web site for other performances. Symphony Space is right on the corner with easy access to the 96th Street Crosstown Bus and the Subway at 96th Street. After the show it was a short walk to the corner and we were home before we knew it. I highly recommend attending shows here!

This is an intimate theatre with no bad seats! I was sitting in the front row and there was plenty of leg room and the view of the stage was unimpeded. The lobby is small so I think it would be tough if the show had an intermission. It is a great venue!

She was going to different schools since she was three and honestly she didn't like any and hated many teachers. Mostly because it felt that teachers didn't really want to put any effort in teaching little kids because they knew there would be no showing off any successful dance or participating in competitions, children are too little. But in Alma dance academy I feel like teacher just loves to teach, she is absolutely fantastic at it and she just loves the process and loves kids. I see her with my daughter who is 6, see her with 2 year olds and 12 year olds - she is an incredible teacher to all of them - patient, motivating, energetic and just pure joy to be around. Thank you for teaching my daughter flamenco, she keeps saying how much she loves her teacher and the dancing. All thanks to Alma dance academy. Hope you prosper and be happy here in Cliffside Park and we love having you as a part of our community. Grateful mom of a dancing 6 year old girl.

The decor is to die for. There's a "lounge" area by the area with large couches, velvet assents and little tables. the rest of the venue has warm tones with classy accents. overall, i truely liked it. half way through the staff dimmed the lights, overall its a warm, welcoming atmosphere. I did not partake in the bar drinks this time around, as im taking a break from drinking, but he other tables seemed to grab some nice looking craft cocktails. overall service was slow, there was only 1 staff member on board this day, but it was just myself and 2 family members here for 45 mins. i dont think this was the servers fault. it seemed the kitchen was a bit relaxed. the calamari was fresh and large rings, but complaint was that they were not as crunchy as ive had in other locations. i think they needed a minute or 2 to fry a little more. it comes with a dip, not a marinara sauce. i grabbed the chargrilled octopus. i loved this. only downfall is that it comes with a large salad. i would have rather less salad and more octopus itself. for my entree i had the scallops over risotto with ginger carrot sauce. there were 5 medium scallops provided. they also needed another minute or 2, they were almost perfect. the carrot ginger sauce was nice, but mainly carrot flavor. i liked the risotto, but i think they needed to tone down on the salt. the tiramisu was very good! they brought out a candle and a free glass of champagne. i would come back for drinks and another meal.

All classes are led by a group of talented instructors that have perfected their craft. I've been dancing and taking classes here since 2017 with the RRDF company. I've taken heels, hip hop, reggaeton, commercial pop, cardio dance fitness, etc. I've had nothing but positive experiences! There's an amazing sense of community. The instructors are encouraging, inspiring, and attentive to students' needs. The other students are supportive and welcoming. It really is a judge free zone where you can be free, express yourself, and dance your heart away. I leave every single class in a better mood than when I came in. I was here this weekend for the CU MFA acting project. Had we known the theater was in a church we probably wouldn't have gotten lost. Pretty funny though considering the somewhat blasphemous material of Canterbury Tales (the show we saw). Despite the high school gym feel (odd colored tiling and florescent lighting) in the "lobby", I thought this was a nice, intimate theater. I feel like every seat is a good seat. The acoustics were pretty great and very few members of the cast had to be mic'd. The lighting seemed somewhat limited, but that's more of a concern for people putting on a show there than the audience. And I don't know if the stage crew are students, but they did an awesome job. I didn't see them trolling up and down the sides like I usually do in professional settings. There are plenty of bathrooms for the ladies and note to the men.. the gift shop is not the bathroom. Portable munchies can be purchased in the vending machine off to the side.. otherwise sneaking in fruit and rice krispies treats is how I roll. From the schedule, it looks like this space doubles as a movie theater and also holds dance shows. Definitely a great space.. but the tickets are probably a couple more dollars than I'd hope to pay.

Between the main acts, the ringmaster performs smaller tricks and brings audience members on stage; while these segments felt a little long, they were cute overall. A few tips for your visit: - There is only one general entrance (plus VIP), so expect to wait outside. This can be tough if the weather is freezing. - There is a bar & plenty of snacks, but lines get long right before showtime. Be warned that the seating is very tight. I actually regretted buying nachos with cheese because I was terrified of spilling cheese on my neighbors! - The tent was very warm (sometimes too warm). Again, the seats are super tight so I had a hard time juggling my layers, bag, food, and drinks. - Most people say every seat has a good view, but for the best perspective, I'd recommend aiming for the center middle or upper rows. - Our 6:15 PM show ended at exactly 8:25 PM (2 hours and 10 minutes), which is helpful to know for dinner reservations. My only real disappointment was the audience. The performers do incredible, dangerous stunts, yet the applause was so weak! I felt bad for them- they deserve more than a polite "clap clap" for the level of talent they show. Overall, cute and great for all ages. Highly recommend!

We sat in the 3rd to last row and we were able to see every act perfectly fine. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - The light up toys that were sold in the Concessions area were $20 each! Talk about price mark up. Not only were they extremely expensive, but we noticed that they stopped lighting up for some people halfway through the show. - Supposedly, food and drinks are not allowed in, however, it's possible to get it in depending on how thorough security is with checking your bag.
