I like this place a lot and have been here several times. The atmosphere is casual and has good energy. The prices are fair and the servers are very friendly. Tonight the food was not that good. The worst chicken Marsala I've had. The sauce tasted canned and the chicken was flavorless. It came with sautéed green beans, rice, and a house salad, all of which were bland. We enjoy the outside bar. cat was a nice bartender. The wife had the meatballs, which are quite good with the red sauce. Add a little parm and red pepper flakes and you're all set. First time dinner with family. Disappointed. We were greeted nicely and sat in a booth quickly around 7pm on Wednesday. We sat. Sat. And sat. No one came to greet us at the table. After 15 minutes of trying to establish eye contact with the several servers in the dining area got up and went to the hostess stand to inquire who our server is. One of the servers within earshot said to the hostess that she'd be happy to take our table. Five or more minutes later and about to leave upset some other server comes with water glasses and without a "thank you for waiting" nor a "sorry to keep you waiting" she simply set down the water and asked what we want to drink. So went our first experience. As a side dish I ordered green beans. Nope. I got a baked potato. When she came back to the table I pointed to the error and she briskly took the potato away after asking if we wanted to take it home and I said no. Almost done with my meal I asked when my side of green beans will be coming. She said she thought that I didn't want them?! How crazy a thought. I corrected her understanding and they finally came at the about the same time as the spumoni. I can go in but you get the idea. The food itself was good. Meatballs, stuffed hot peppers, risotto, veal piccata, pasta bolognese, etc. On the way out after paying at the table (yes I still left a tip despite the bad service) the two people at the hostess stand continued to remain seated and just stared as we said have a good night--wish on the back end we'd have gotten a thank you come again. Or when complaining about the enormous wait someone would have come over to apologize. Or when we said we were first time diners someone would have come over to ask how our meal is at some point. Or when the screw up with the green beans happened someone would have apologized. Or when we commented that the iced tea tasted odd we'd have been told something other than yes most people say that. Overall tells me that the owners and managers just don't care about their business and patrons. Or the server we had was grossly under trained and unsupervised. Or the hostess covered up for a habitually bad server friend. All in all we will never go back nor will we recommend this restaurant despite the tasty food. Was it worth the $150 for 3 diners where only one drank water, another a diet soda and the other a bad tasting iced tea that the server said others same the same? NO! read more

There is a screened in outdoor patio with a bar. Haven't tried it yet but definitely will. Large bar in the restaurant and if you follow my posts you know that is where I sat. Staff is friendly, attentive and are hospitality oriented. Ever had that waiter/waitress that had the enthusiasm of two teenage boys being forced to apologize to each other after a fist fight. Would have given this place three stars if it wasn't so expensive. For 150 bucks for 2 people, I expect better quality. The food wasn't bad. It was passable. The Cioppino was pretty good actually. But I could get it anywhere. My wife ordered the sea bass special. It was billed as coming with a peach bourbon sauce. There was no sauce. And the blackened coating had little flavor. No hits of peach or bourbon but for the 3 peach slices. The side of veg was the medley you buy in bulk from Sam's club to steam on weeknights. None of it was the gourmet quality you expect at that price. The service was flawless. No complaints there. The atmosphere was blah. It smelled kind of moldy with no windows or airflow in the area where we were seated. It was well lit and the tables were white cloth covered and freshly made. Bottom line: you can get far better for this price. You can even get far better for half the price in this area. read more

Used to be frequent diners at Sylvester's before the crash. Went today for first time since it reopened. Had a 6pm reservation for my wife's birthday. Got there at 6 and got seated right away. Then we waited and waited and waited. No one came to our table for 20 minutes despite there being two waitstaff working our small room. No water, no be right with you, no contact whatsoever. Sylvester's used to be an exceptional experience with great food and great service. We would eat there 3-4 times a month and looked forward to weekends when they served prime rib. Their people were the best and they made you feel like family. However, since the reopening after accident, everything other than the upgraded decor has been "hit or miss" and more often a big miss. Can't quite tell if it's lack of management oversight or deliberate disregard for delivering quality. They are often out of menu items including prime rib on the weekend. Food quality ranges from fair to poor. For example, have been served cold food several times, seafood and steak dishes have been served with questionable "freshness". Service has a similar range of quality especially from the newer staff that do not seem properly trained. A few of the old-time staff are still there to offer endless excuses for why things have "slipped". My last visit I experienced an unpleasant dish of old, greasy linguine and clams ...this finally did me in. This regular won't be back. Truly disgusting, disappointing and feel bad for the staff that have attempted to keep Sylvester's going. read more

I had a dispute over a mistake the server made on my order. The mistake was left on the table the entire time, and the manager insisted that they could flash-fire a new steak. I was served the correct steak, and they left the mistake on the table. I barely took a bite of the new steak when the manager came over to pick up the mistake. I told her to leave it on the table. I didn't think that the new steak looked right. All they cared about was taking the original steak off the table. I told them to take them both back. My wife finished her meal, and I hadn't even started to eat. This is when the owner got involved. He charged over to the table, stating that I wasn't going to keep the original steak that he was going to charge me for both. He said he would meet me in the parking lot if I didn't pay. I said I would pay for my wife's dinner and what I ate, which I did. We tipped the server $50.00 and left after being banned from the restaurant. VERY Disappointing Was there with family tonight. The wait time for dinner (One full hour and 10 minutes from when order was placed) . In addition the walleye I ordered was cold, dry and tasted like someone stepped on it. The most disappointing part of this experience was that the manager could not be bothered to come over and rectify the issue. She was very consumed laughing and having a wonderful time with customers. Meanwhile I was humiliated after telling my family how wonderful the restaurant was. The wife and I visited Sylvester's Saturday August 17th, 2024. the drinks were excellent as were the appetizer's. i ordered the Prime Rib rare fact is I said the rearer the better but when the food came out the Prime Rib was well done. at that point I could have sent it and waited another 30-45 min but we were on a schedule. Fact is that I clearly didn't get what I asked or paid for and as a result my dinner was not an enjoyable experience. Would the wife and I go back anytime soon, absolutely not, there are many restaurant's that will actually prepare the food that you order the way you expect it and without surprises. We had never been here so totally a new experience. Had heard amazing things about certain foods and while I didn't have them most of the food was great. The stuffed mushrooms were to me a little too stuffed with the mozzarella and spinach. I wanted to taste more of the mushroom. The wife loved them. The bread was so warm and fresh and the compound butter was perfect. I could have ended my meal with just a couple of loaves of bread and butter. The linguine and clams were excellent. Again the bread was the perfect vessel to soak up that delicious sauce at the end. When a restaurant has a special and they say it used to be on the menu and now it isn't and then you get it and it is awful then you know why it wasn't on the menu anymore. The stuffed shells are the worst stuffed shells I have ever tasted. Bland fits the best description of the sauce, shells, and filling. A special should wow your guest and it was trash. Second time ever at Sylvester's, and the first time in probably 10 years. Overall the inside is pretty nice, and they have a patio bar as well. Our server was attentive but his affect was a little flat. Not a big deal though. The menu offers mostly Italian classics and favorites, with a pretty good variety of starters and main courses. I ordered the braised escarole, which I thought was going to be similar to the greens and beans I always get when I go to Papa Bears. Instead, it tasted like warm salad with white beans. While it actually tasted better than it looked, it was a little "soupier" than I would've liked. I also ordered the fried Italian mild peppers. Four good-sized whole peppers came out, but were a little dry and could've used a little more oil and some salt. Overall they tasted good, but nothing out of the ordinary. The draft beer came out cold, and although we didn't try dessert, they have a nice selection of dessert options. We would definitely consider trying Sylvester's again (and not with a 10 year gap this time!) to try other items off the menu. read more

After the accident the prices went up 20 percent and the the quantity of the food went down 20 percent. They also lost their kitchen and the replacements were not up to maintaining the level of quality that we had come to enjoy and count on. I loved this place but in today's economic environment I'm forced to stay at home and enjoy the family recipe's that I've made my whole life. It's not what it used to be. Wedding soup was cold and the chicken in it was as tough as a garden hose. Pasta was mediocre and if it's even possible, the chicken in it, was even tougher to chew through than what was in the soup. Our bartenders were tired and complained the entire time. Just not a meal all around worth what it cost . I'm glad to see them reopened and I'll maybe try it again since it used to be my favorite spot; hoping it was just an off night. Knowing that the place would be packed, even on a Wednesday night, we reserved a table for 5pm. Unfortunately, the service was rushed. Our entrees arrived at the same time as our salads. After an hour, our waiter suddenly appeared at our table and asked us to leave, because they needed to free up the table. He had just served us an after dinner drink with the check. This was very bad form. We didn't appreciate having to down our drink and rush out. I will cut them some slack because they just reopened, but rushing us out after one hour? We had 2 orders of the Cedar Plank Salmon, the special short rib dinner and the scallop special...all were spectacular. And the Oysters Rockefeller's were superb. When I asked the group I was meeting with last week to share a favorite local restaurant for me to try, no one disagreed: Sylvester's was the place to go. And right they were: on a cold and wintery trip, the dark cozy interior (even the faux wine cellar), the courteous-but-comfortable service, and home-made ingredients made this a wonderful Italian dining experience. My waitress, Tammy, was helpful in guiding me to selections that made use of some of Sylverster's strengths: home-made sausage and sauces. Seafood dishes had come as strongly recommended, including the calamari appetizer. I passed on these recommendations this time, but will unhesitatingly give them a go the next time I find myself in Canton. read more
