I'm on board with all that. Where my review gets dicey is when you try to compare this with the ultra self-indulgent thermal and sauna complexes that are sprouting up all over northern Europe. Not a fair comparison, it seems.... As you approach the building, it is quite imposing along the river banks (literally across the street from the Deutsches Museum). I thought, "this is gonna be great!" Once inside however, I found a few things to be more challenging than I had expected. * I was unable to locate a map of the place, and after looking at the menu of fees; I still was unable to figure out exactly what I was asking for. * The person working the admission booth was quite friendly, but apparently had NO English whatsoever. I'm good with that, but... * Signage around the place was sort of hit and miss, especially since you have to leave some of your belongings in a small box near the attendant, (who also only spoke German, but was significantly more curt!) * I kept thinking I would find a map of the place so I would know where the various baths and saunas were located. If such a thing exists, it's still a mystery to me. At one point, I made my way into the hall with the main pool wrapped only in a towel, only to find the door (that would lead me back to the sauna) locked behind me. Finally figured out my wristband would unlock the door, after a bit of wondering how I would negotiate getting out of the spa in only a towel. * But most importantly, assuming I found all the major features on offer, I was a little surprised there wasn't more there. Granted, I was there on a Wednesday afternoon, but having said that, I was surprised to find the only two dozen or so other patrons in the entire place, and most of them were, shall we say, of the elder population. All the reports about the beauty of the facility are true, as it was certainly a gem of the late 19th century, and has been well preserved. Somehow, I think that I expected there would be a bit more in the sauna area, and that even if exclusively in German, the staff would be a bit more helpful to a wayward and weary tourist. Maybe four or five stars on another day with a different attendant working the locker room, but not this time around!

The pool to me is a little to "cold" - thats not the water, but the way the marbel steps and all are set up. There is no place to relax - except maybe outdoors in the summer. The hot outdoor pool is realy nice, but way too often way too crowded. This also goes for the main pool - you have to get out of peoples way a lot. The stream room would be nice, but is very small and also seems "old" and is often crowded. Overall the changing area and the showers could be a little better maintained and cleaned. As to the fitness center, where I go most often. The staff is always open, friendly and helpfull! The machines are good in numbers and usually well maintained towards the excercise part - but the entertainment leaves lots to be desired. TV reception if frequently bad or interruped. Also an online login is shown, no network is available. WiFi would be real nice. You can keep a paper file of your workouth though.

The pool itself is very nice but not exactly what I was expecting. They have only three lanes marked for "sports swimmers", ie people who want to swim laps. Actually three lanes is supposedly a lot for Germany although it's pretty surprising to an American swimmer. Thus, it gets a bit crowded in the lanes during the summer, around noon and after work. Early mornings and 1pm are good times to go to get the pool more to yourself. They also do not have flags for backstrokers and their lane lines aren't colored so as to indicate where the wall is. They also have a sauna and a great diving pool, although I haven't tried either. The hours are very generous, to accommodate any schedule and they have a swim shop in the building in case you forget anything.

Besonders die Leitung und die Bademeister dieses Schwimmbades sind völlig inkompetent und haben…read moreihre Aufsichtspflicht aufs sträflichste verletzt, als mein Sohn mit seinem Freund von einer Vierergruppe von größeren türkischen Kindern bespuckt, bedrängt, beschimpft und körperlich angegriffen wurden. Und wer hat ein Hausverbot bekommen? Natürlich die Person, die diese Situation lösen wollte, wobei leider alles eskaliert ist, weil sie als Frau in keinster Weise von jemandem beschützt wurde, sondern alles herabgespielt wurde mit den Worten, es sind nur Kinder!! Genau, Kinder die kleinere Kinder angreifen und dann sogar einer erwachsenen Frau, die versucht schlimmeres zu verhindern, nachdem es kein Bademeister tat, ins Gesicht schlagen und dann jetzt noch vor Gericht ein Trauma vortäuschen. Unsere Gesellschaft ist so krank, dass sowas akzeptiert wird !!!!!

The pool is quite short, 25m + 8 more where the pool is so little deep that you can touch the bottom with your hands. And in Saturday/Sunday there are no separated lanes, that's why I am saying it isn't so good for training BUT - here comes the good part - in the weekend this pool has waves! Each half hour for 7 minutes. If you are a family, that can be great for your childrens. More than that, there is one pool inside and a (small) hot pool outside, with bubbles and water spurts... you cannot imagine how it is good since you try the place in a cold day! The staff is very nice too, not everyone speaks English but it wasn't absolutely a problem. And, as one of them pointed out, they don't speak German either, they speak Bavarian :) Sweet!
