It's not an especially big store but there's a reasonable, though not huge, range of wares on display as you go in. For the tray-made chocolates the pricing is fairly straightforward- you pay depending on what size of box you want, and then they will put whichever chocolates you want in that box until it's full. Boxes are neatly presented in a box tied with a ribbon, inside a shiny bag- it's a gift ready to be given. They also do special commissions such as icing names onto chocolate figures, the usual kind of thing. Their web site gives a good idea of their range. The chocolates are quality stuff- a little bit bitter (like real chocolate should be), quite dusty, but very tasty little treats. Besides Belgian chocolate, I also love Belgian beers, and I asked in the Chocolate House whether there were any shops selling Belgian beers in Cambridge. Unbelievably, I was told the answer was 'no', when I later found out there are at least 2. Maybe there's some sort of inter-Belgian shop rivalry going on there?..

It is not cheap, but the six chocolates in a packet are rich, flavoursome and mouthwateringly superb. The entrance is dominated by tempting (but highly priced) giant slabs of chocolate in a wide range of flavours. Beautiful in appearence, they make excellent gifts for the person who has everything (except enough chocolate, there is never enough chocolate). At the rear of the shop the selections of small packets of six chocolates are helpfully arranged by chocolate colour, fruit and nut selections. The varieties change regularly, which keeps you coming back for more I would not recommend this chocolate for children; too expensive. Buy them a bar of the ordinary stuff, and save this initiation for when they are old enough to appreciate it!

Distribute the carnations and chocolate to your girls, watching their faces light up because they also do not have men. 5. Go back to your room and watch "Hitch," while eating the remaining chocolates and drinking that whole bottle of shiraz... alone. (Queue sad Charlie Brown music...) Point is, Hotel Chocolat has a fantastic array of chocolates, from my favourite espresso-flavored, to decadent truffles. The gift boxes are also amazing, and can be ordered for various occasions (though I must say that I ADORE that they made "self-indulgence" an occasion). The best bit about Hotel Chocolat is that it's not a cutesy candy store; it's a chic, sexy, modern chocolate shop. NBs, the sales people were not always so knowledgeable about chocolate itself (which I thought would have been an asset), and they insisted that they didn't take Scottish currency... in case I had any, I guess. Even though the website has a limited amount of photographs at the moment, I can assure you that the fudge is delicious! My favourite flavours are Amaretto, Cherry and Almond, Vanilla, and Raspberry Ripple, as well as Rum and Raisin! Everyone should have a slice of fudge from Deeping Fudge.
