They called me to tell me the appointment I had made actually shouldn't have been allowed because they don't do general check ups that late. It wasn't a big deal to me, but the lady who called me was able to schedule me another appointment earlier in the day that wasn't available online. Not only that, when I asked which exit to take from work she moved the location from Germantown to Gaithersburg because she said I wouldn't need to drive as far and traffic would be easier! It was so thoughtful she did that for me. My wait was only about 10 minutes when I got there. Maybe a few minutes less, I didn't time it. The front desk lady chatted and time flew anyways. When they came to get me, everything was explained to me very well, and I wasn't touched without being told exactly what they were going to do (example: we're going to take your temp from your ear). It's little but sometimes you go to a doctor and everyone just manhandles you. The provider I saw, Renee, was amazing. She sat and listened to me and took notes on even little things I said. She explained the lab testing she wanted to do, and never made me feel awkward. I could feel she cares a lot for her job and patients. How they were going to use my insurance was also explained very well, and before my visit they called me to make sure everything was in order before I came in. And if you don't believe me, Washingtonian magazine also loves Dr. Malik, ranking him as one of the top doctors in the area.

They have recently started requiring patients to come in every three months to renew routine medications such as blood pressure and cholesterol medications. These are common, non-controlled medications. If the purpose is medical follow-up, then actually follow the patient. Instead, you are required to make an appointment, typically wait 20-25 minutes, have a nurse check basic vitals for couple minutes, and then see the doctor for less than five minutes. It feels like an illusion of follow-up care rather than an actual evaluation. No blood work was even ordered. I specifically had to ask about it. So what exactly is the purpose of requiring the follow-up if you are not checking how the patient is actually doing? Just look at the patient, say, "You look fine," and bill the insurance? Even worse, the doctor did not review my test results. After looking at my BP reading, he said, "Ah, I guess that is why you are on blood pressure medication, right?" That told me he did not even seem to know why I was there. Yet the office required this visit before renewing the prescription, and roughly $500 was billed to insurance. OK, my insurance covers fully, but still, I do not understand how this kind of practice is considered ethical. Then, we wonder why healthcare and insurance costs are so high. Well, now we know predatory practices like this. My impression is simple: this practice feels far more focused on generating billable visits than providing meaningful medical care. The doctors seem disconnected, the front office seems disengaged, and I have very little confidence that a developing serious condition would be recognized early with this kind of superficial follow-up and subpar care. My advice: run elsewhere like there is no tomorrow. If you decide, or are forced, to stay with this office, may God have mercy on your soul.

I have previous experience with other therapies, including regular talk therapy, which was not helpful in helping me get "unstuck". I was unsure about whether this would be helpful or not, but I figured it was worth trying. Emily is wonderful. She has a calming presence, and makes you feel at ease. While she allowed me a safe place to express my fears and doubts, she really encouraged me to be present in my body, which it seems, is the basis for hypnotherapy. One of the things that I really like about her style of hypnotherapy is that it is very solution focused. People wonder how hypnotherapy works. For me, hypnotherapy is like when you lose your keys in your house and instead of running around trying to figure out where the keys are, you just sit down and relax and breathe deeply and let the answer come to you. I had intended to work on insomnia, which had been a chronic problem for me. Once I started to relax in the sessions, it became apparent that a lot of my insomnia was driven by anxiety about what I planned to do the next day, and I found that this anxiety actually was driven by a desire to be liked by other people, which was driven by low self-esteem, and which was driven by early childhood experiences of fear and shame. Once I got to the bottom of all of that, the solution wasn't to be angry at my parents, the solution was to let those feelings be fully experienced and lived. Emily sat with me through sobs and tears as my conscious mind finally worked through strong emotions that I was unable to process as a child. For me, there were tears during my sessions, but I always walked out of her office feeling more alive, more open to whatever life might bring, and feeling like healing had happened inside me. The great thing about hypnotherapy with Emily is that she is really there for you--like an amazing and supportive witness to whatever emotions you bring to the session, and a helpful guide to assist you in getting where you want to go. I also found that unlike traditional therapists, she didn't watch the clock during the session but would manage the process more through allowing you to get to the end of an issue and then develop some next steps to keep you headed in the right direction. But since I never heard back from them, I am sharing it below. ********************************************** I hesitated to write this, hoping that I would get a survey from the practice itself and could keep this "in-house" so to speak. However, the fact that I am still upset more than a month after my appointment has me writing this review. I had a LAP Band put in 12 years ago by Dr. Barry Greene. I had no problems with it, and I felt good about the practice. Recently I have been having some gastric issues and my primary care physician (PCP) ordered a CAT Scan of my GI tract among other things. My PCP thought that the band had slipped and asked me to make an appointment for a follow-up with Dr. Greene. My appointment was in late September. That day I had a fluoroscope (a procedure where you drink some barium while having a scan while swallowing) which was read by Dr. Joseph Greene. He showed me some "rough edges" on my esophagus. I asked him what this could mean, and he replied that I needed to come back to talk to Dr. Barry as this could be an issue and that he (Barry,) as the LAP band expert, needed to be the one to talk to me. The earliest appointment was for late October. So far no complaints except for the long wait and lack of immediate information. I now had a month to wait and think about all of the terrible things those "rough edges" could mean and by the time of my appointment I was about as nervous as one could be when one knows in the back of their mind that if something were truly wrong I would have been rushed to the front of the queue. At least that was how I comforted myself when I was most scared. The day of the appointment with Dr. Barry arrived. I was taken into the back by an assistant and asked the questions I expected to be asked, about medications, medical history, etc. Then I was asked, "So why are you here today?" I looked at the assistant with incredulity and answered "I don't know. I was told I needed to come back to see Dr. Barry, so you tell me." She excused herself without addressing my answer. Barry then came in. He glanced at my chart and at the fluoroscope photo and pronounced that the band was perfectly situated. He then asked me a few questions, after which he said that the band was working perfectly. He explained why the band was working perfectly. He then started to talk about other surgery options, at which point I stopped him, pointed to the photo and asked "Well what about this? The jagged edges of my esophagus? He answered "Oh, that's nothing. It's just the contractions from swallowing." He then returned to his spiel about a Gastric Sleeve. Nothing acknowledging the fact that I had been worried for over a month about these jagged edges. Nothing to reassure me that yes, I was correct in thinking that they would have scheduled me for an earlier appointment if something were really wrong. Instead, I was left with the definite impression that no one had opened my chart, much less looked at it, since my last appointment, meaning that if something really were wrong, they wouldn't know... or care. I left feeling the following: 1. That the questions about my current band and the pronouncement that it was "working perfectly" was simply a "cover your ass" move. 2. That this second appointment was for no purpose other than to sell me more surgery. 3. That I was the victim of a medical "bait and switch." This review is not to question the competence of this practice and the providers therein. They are excellent surgeons, but the lack of empathy was astounding. As I said in the beginning of the missive, I am still upset.
