Hurray for him. So sad for us. The building has been sold, new tenants are coming in soon. The bakery originally opened in 1978 right on Main Street in downtown Woodland. The retro cool sign is iconic. It's a genuine bakery that makes cakes, cookies, pastries, doughnuts, cupcakes, and a bunch inch more items. Classic Americana. They are known for their cakes. Wedding day picture perfect cakes that are perfect for any occasions... birthdays, anniversaries, weddings... are in my case I just bought them "because". I am particular fond of their champagne cake. Mmm. Besides having a talent for making a darn tasty cake, they had a talent for decorating them as well. That's a talent. For each holiday, they would go all out offering decorated baked goods. I luved everything they made. I use to live nearby and would make regular trips out there "just because"...to buy cookies, a slice or two of the champagne cake, whatever caught my fancy at the time. The pricing was always fair.

Did you know you can ferment honey to make a wine? Yup. Honey, yeast and water fermented under an…read moreexpert eye makes mead wine. I recently enjoyed my first (and definitely not my last) dining experience at the HIVE tasting room and kitchen in Woodland, CA. I enjoyed it; the food was delicious and customer service on point. I went there with the intent of mead wine tasting but ended up not since I had driving duties. [Fun fact: mead wine has less alcohol content than grape wine.] Instead I ordered lunch and washed it down with their honey ice tea. The iced tea had a prominent honey taste. Hubs luved his, but my tastebuds were confused. Odd though because I luv honey and iced tea. We also ordered a Ruben sandwich $22 and an order of waffles. The sandwich was classic with the familiar flavors. Nice quality cut of meat, thinly shaved. The waffles $17 were topped with blueberries, slivered almonds, and orange blossom whipped ricotta cream which I asked for on the side. The ricotta cream was divine. The waffles tasted pretty darn good. However the pricing for both entrees seemed high for the serving size. But this is a type of place where folks can eat and linger to enjoy the grounds, atmosphere, and each other's company without anyone rushing you out. We enjoyed our meal out in the back outdoor patio. The landscaping is all organic with lots of pollinating and drought resistant plants and trees. The building is a zero energy building with an onsite brewing facility. The interior has a brand newish look and feel. There is a honey tasting and mead wine tasting counter, gift shop, and dining area. All of this is in an open floor plan. The indoor seating capacity is limited. The place can be rented out for events (such as a garden wedding), private facility tours. Plus they host community events. Take a peek at their website. Some events are free. Events range from tours, book readings, yoga classes, flower bouquet class, gardening... etc.

I started with their seasonal beet soup, and had the open faced lox and arugula toast. For dessert I had the dulce de leche mousse which was divine, and a bite of their cannollis too. We even squeezed in a honey tasting! My favorite was the clover, although there definitely some interesting ones like avocado, mango, coffee, Hawaiian, and other regional ones I'd never heard of before! Some gave cinnamony notes, some marshmallowy, malty/cola-esque, and more. The hot honey was also a nice kick. Did not try any of their meads yet. They also had a few events coming up, including the Science of Mead and a Valentine's Day thing. When the weather is warmer I'll come back to hang out on the patio!

I forgot to add a meat to my ticket and they went out of their way to find me and ask me if I wanted meat on my sandwich. Second, you can't beat the price. $12 Bucks for a six inch, chips and water. Third, it taste good!

The turnover in this store (East Gibson Road - Woodland) is high, they don't seem to be able to keep employees. On Sunday 05/25/2025, afternoon) I walked up to a checker (Lady, blonde, about 50 years of age) and asked where I could find a certain item. She asked what it was and then she said I don't know. So, I asked if she could look it up on her screen (Computer at the checkout counter) and she said she had no way of checking. Then she got kind of snotty and yelled over to another young checker (Young guy, about 22-25 years of age), and said "I have things I need to go do, can you tell this guy (me) and tell him where the item is that I am looking for. He said to try aisle XXX on the left side. Bingo, there it was. He knew right away! (Give this man a raise) This lady does not belong working in this store if she is going to act this way. I hope management sees this and has a talk with her. I have been shopping at this store 2-3 times per week since it opened and now, I am not happy with this store. Recently (05-25-2025) I purchased some frozen meals made by Tribali. I took one to work for lunch. When I opened the package, the plastic container was shattered into 20 pieces and was all inside the frozen food. I couldn't eat it, so I wrapped it back in its box (See blue tape). THIS is when I noticed the expiration date of 03/06/2025 (What the heck?) I called the store, and they said to bring it in for an exchange. I took it in, went to the freezer section and found about a dozen more of these meals had expired, some as far back as Oct. 10, 2023 (Almost 2 years expired). I immediately went back to the employees and had them come take a look, and they did. I asked a lot of questions as to Whom is in charge of getting expired food off of the shelves and out of the freezers. They said they have a "program" that tells them. LMBO - this program doesn't work. Today (05-28-2025) I decided to call the store manager. He told me he was sorry and explained that employees are supposed to check the items when they stock the shelves. It's evident that the employees do not do their job properly. He also mentioned that they have a program to check for expired foods. The more we talked, the less confident and less understanding I was feeling. After a long conversation with the store manager, I asked for the corporate office number, I wanted to take this further. He gave me the number and of course, I couldn't get through. Finally, after 45 minutes I was able to get through with the help of someone else. Now I spoke to one of the managers there and went through the same scenario - how can this happen if you have programs and people are supposed to check these things. We had a nice talk, and he is going to have a discussion with the Bel Air manager. For now, and the next many months, Bel Air is going to lose my business, roughly $300 per week. I will take myself to Food For Less even though it is not convenient. See attached photos. My new found advice?? CHECK ALL PACKAGES for the expiration dates!
