The last shop one your left as you head up the tourist road to the Dandenong ranges is Svaks Café. One of the newer establishment on the Basin's group of shops, Svaks made an enviable name for itself quite soon after opening for it's freshly made cakes and delights by it's in house baker.
A popular hang out for push bike riders heading up or down the hill, you'll be able to spot it by the amount of lycra clad men and women lazing on the outdoor furniture of a weekend morning.
Inside it's a rustic charmer with good coffee and a good little menu serving breakfast and lunch. Still retaining an inner city feel has made Svaks the choice of most locals nowadays, as instead of a view of a passing tram and a line if cars, the trees and open spaces of The Basin Triangle across the road give your eyes a well earned dose of fresh colour.
A favourite of mine is the vegetable pancake. Layers of cheese and grilled vegetable make this an omelette from hell, or heaven, that is sure to please. Although there has been a change in hands in the kitchen recently, the recipes have remained the same, and it's only a matter of time before the locals decide to continue their love affair with Svaks. read more
