Sutherlands has been around for a long time. When the big box stores came roaring in town, this place stood strong. They may have lost a little business but it never went away. I think it's great when a local store can do this. The store is pretty standard. They have a lumber section, plumbing, landscaping, ect. The building is older so it always seems dirtier than it really is here. When you enter the store you can usually find an associate to help you find something. In fact sometimes they are hanging out in front to catch as you come in. I really like this because it give you a small hardware feeling.
I was down in Cruces one weekend to help my Dad install a screen door. I am a little embarrassed to tell this story. We measured the door opening and we never wrote it down. Surely we could remember the measurement. This is odd for me because I usually write everything down. My wife and I are perpetual list makers. This was just an off day. We found a door we were looking for and it was an odd size. They had it in stock. My Dad and I examined it and I suggested we price shop. He agreed and our adventure began going to every place in Las Cruces that sold doors. At the end we ended back at the first place we started, Sutherlands! So we went to install the door. Guess what! We had the wrong size! Turned out the opening was a standard size. Yeah this is a little embarrassing even as I type. They let us exchange the door without any problems.
