Chef Yamamoto serves gorgeous dishes, which he prepares front of house for all to see. His broth is delicious and the tofu was meltingly soft. His signature of 'Griet' fish done 3 ways is a revelation. The jelly is given texture by the addition of Griet roe, and the sashimi of the same fish is lightly cured and seasoned by being pressed in seaweed for 24h. Wonderful dish where everything just works. Price and quality are startling with various appetisers and immaculate dishes coming your way before finishing with a plate of generous sushi. Otoro tuna, Unagi etc. we'll crafted, with his rice being exceptional. The staff is sweet and friendly, and due to the fact that the small team is just starting, you get the feel of eating a surprisingly excellent meal in someone's sitting room. Almost homely, if it weren't for the quality and technique displayed here. Definitely a place we'll be following.

You used to be able to pick up to 5 items at a time and order 5 times. So - so sushi, cut very small and a very limited selection of fish, lots of rice and usually mayonnaise based sauces to fill you up. I would usually choose some of the cooked items, as they weren't so small and were decently prepared. However, when I visited yesterday there had been some changes. Now you only get 4 items per order AND you can now only order 4 times. Ok, I get it but in addition, each of the courses, including the sushi and the cooked items, are all considerably smaller. So not only do you get 25% less items, each item is also smaller. As I said, Sumo was never great, now it's not even good. I will not return.

The 5 rounds with the 4 items was more than enough for me (only got 4 rounds with the last being 2 items but I got a mixture of kitchen and sushi with the kitchen items being larger portions). Usually this isn't enough to make me leave a poor review, but I got chastised for about 3 minutes for not ordering a drink when I wasn't told it was necessary. "Is this your first time? ...okay, is it going to be your last?" Asked that three times before he said "then I'll let it slide this time," and started complaining I didn't order a drink when his coworker never told me it was mandatory. If I'm paying €30 for a mediocre experience that the waiter never returns besides to quickly drop off food then vanishes again without being able to ask for anything extra (including my drink order) and they don't tell me something is mandatory, I'm probably not going to try and hunt down the waiter if I'm not thirsty and have no idea if any of the drinks are going to be worth it considering the food quality. Next time, maybe gently let someone know during the meal rather than chewing them out for a policy the server never mentioned during checkout. Needless to say, I won't be back and will be exploring other options in the city.

We do not need this sort of rip off establishments in the new Markthal in Rotterdam although I suspect that as the Dutch would not know what good food is anyway, Sushi Sky will probably get away with ripping them off for sometime into the future.
