I too have loved Sushi Boat for many years, always providing a quick sushi fix when needed, the best fast food you can get. However lately the shine is off the apple. Routinely you need to wait for a table or a place at the bar, not always convenient when dining with friends. There is a foul smell in the air as soon as you walk in. This I've noticed my last 3 visits. The boats are routinely empty or only offer the basics forcing you to order offer the menu, if you can get someone's attention. Avoid the uninformed crowd and save your time and appetite. This restaurant has forgotten what had drawn us in when they first opened. It's fine for what it is. Cheap decent sushi. Prices are pretty good with 2 salmon nigiri (sake) on a plate for I think around 3.50 if I remember right. Its not the best sushi but for the most part its fresh and reasonably well put together. I try to order rather than waiting for the boats as you can watch certain things go around and around for a while. This was horrible. My boyfriend, my daughter and I came here because our faveourite sushi spot (sushi bbq inn) didn't have any room for us and we were starving for some sushi! First of all, we didn't really understand how to eat there since we had never been before and when we asked, the server seemed annoyed to have to explain it to us. There's boats with the different sushi on it that comes by your table, and if you want something, you need to order. Which is fine! But waving down a server is almost impossible and they seem annoyed to serve you. The sushi was gross. Sorry. It tasted like Co-op sushi. Also, the prices were ridiculous for the quality of sushi you get and for the portion size. $6 for two small pieces of unagi? Seriously? Lastly, my boyfriend got extremely sick after. I love this place. It is my favourite sushi place by far. The salmon sushi pizza is so good, make sure you order some off the menu as it is not placed on the boats. Also, their green tea is so delicious, they brew it just right. I also really like their sweet soy sauce with the red spout (if you were wondering what the difference was between the two containers). Everyone I have taken here has loved it and wanted to come back again. Try to time it so you don't catch the dinner rush but if you do it doesn't take long for two people to get a seat anyway. Dislike VERY much. My boyfriend and I drove an hour across the entire city to go to sushi boat. We waited for an hour on the wait list in anticipation, as we heard it was a good place to go. Impressed by the cooks being Japanese rather than Chinese, as my boyfriend is very picky about this when we go for sushi, we were very excited as we sat down. I loved that they had the place mat with all the different kinds of sushi on it, yet only 3 or 4 different ones came out the entire time we sat there, we were constantly handed other peoples ordered sushi. finally realizing we can order rolls, we asked one of the girls for a couple rolls and sashimi. the waitresses were very friendly as was the rest of the staff. but we were splashed with dishwater, the downside of having the operations in the middle of all the customers. the dishwater went all over myself and both of our food. the sashimi was good, but the rolls were dry and not appetizing at all, even the sushi that we ordered straight from the kitchen wasn't good. if you have 30 different kinds of rolls etc on your menu for the boats, i expect more than 4 different ones to be going around on the boats... rice and tuna, rice and salmon, fruit dishes and cream puffs aren't really what we drove an hour for. read more

So disappointing. Years ago when they reno'd I had high hopes their kitchen, service and management would get better but alas...we were in Friday at supper time and there were more than 6 boats in a row EMPTY! and other scattered boats Empty! The boats that did have product had maybe 1-2 items. We ended up ordering from the server and that took forever. The whole idea of the boats is to be able to take off the boats. They should be full all through mealtimes one would think? And if the boats were full people would actually eat more or try other items just because they're there and easy to grab. It's sad because they have quality fish but it's just so frustrating. If I wanted to order off a menu I'd go to Kinjo! This is a pretty solid sushi joint. One of the keys to a quality sushi restaurant that uses this pre-made type of setup is customer volume, you want alot of people in there eating to keep the overturn up. This place does not have any issues in this aspect, the place is normally packed and you need to wait to get a table. I find the quality of the fish to be very high in this sushi joint given it is in Calgary 1200km away from the nearest ocean. The prices are pretty standard, not bargain cheap, but not as ludicrous as some sushi places can get when ordering by the piece. The seating in the place is poor, there are few booths and the seats at the bar are pretty close together so you will likely be eating arm to arm with someone you dont know. They got extra room from renting out their neighbors, the place seriously needs to renovate to inscrease the length of the boat chain, make it do a couple more turns and complete a C instead of the current circle, thus allowing tables on the inner section of the C and increasing their capacity greatly. read more

Went back to Sushi Boat with friends again on Friday night as we enjoy it so much. Odd as this may sound, they have the best pickled ginger in town. They also have the best miso soup we've tried anywhere. I tried a new dish this time. I was in the mood for salad of some kind and they had warm sesame spinach salad with I think sesame oil on it. Very tasty. My go-to's as they are simply delicious are the crispy roll, the rainbow roll, the salmon and tuna nigiri and the cream puffs for dessert. Nice atmosphere with the boats circling. The sushi is a little pricey, but the quality is above average. There is always a line up to get in. I am surprised that there is not more 'rotating sushi bar' type restaurant in Calgary, because customers turnover is so high with this type of restaurant... once you are seated, there is no long wait to order food and wait for the food to get there. To get the fresh sushi, you are better off ordering from the waiting staff and just getting the dishes from the boats. Rice tends to turn hard when it has been sitting out for a little while. read more

Not what I'd recommend for a quiet date or anything, but fun nonetheless. I've always found the quality and freshness to be acceptable as well. When I went here I wasn't expecting much - food isn't always #1 at sushi boats/trains - but it's actually really good. We had a flurry of plates from the boat, and everything except for one nigiri with nothing but crumbled tempura flakes in it (not to my taste) was delicious. My kids and I love this restaurant. It's a unique experience being served sushi in person and by little boats transporting sushi in an actually japanese themed restaurant while most others are more modern and western. This is a kaiten sushi place, which means you sit there and there is a belt circulating (boats on waterway) all the sushi plates ..you just take whatever you want.. The only problem is that normally in kaiten sushi place, the sushi does not stay on the belt more than 5-8 minutes...after that the kitchen suppose to throw the sushi away, but based on my observation this is not the case...so be careful because you may get some saggy sushi! always get those that are made in front you, or just ask the waitress to get the sushi maker to make fresh for you (yes you can...just take the menu...and tell the waitress) You will be charged base on the color of the plates..I think there are blue, red, and gold. Those sushi makers will prepare the sushi in front of you, then put the sushi on the belt ( Boat)....those sushi makers are actually Japanese..but they are not actual sushi chefs..they probably are students who come to Canada to study English or college. I go there once a year..because we probably spend $65 for me and my gf and we still feel hungry....since only 2 pieces of sushi per small plate however it will be a good experience for you...if you want to see what kaiten sushi looks like read more

I I love the concept of actually being able to see the food float past you before actually selecting it. the atmosphere is very relaxed, and it really helps one unwind I wish they would have a better sign in system, but thankfully on the other hand the wait times are never too long. The staff are really attentive, and are always ready to describe the rolls with those who are unfamiliar with sushi. Tip - don't just take what's on the boats. there are some super popular dishes that get snatched up right away, so you're left with the less popular dishes. first thing first: if you can eat a lot of rice, this place is not cheap. overall ok experience, sushi on boat is kind rare in Alberta and its quite neat you pick things that looks appealing to you- you get to try more variety that way. giving out two star because their taste only worth two star. some are good but some has sit in the boat for too long the rice is even a little dry. had a piece seared tuna and was so fishy that i have to spit out. so fish quality was definitely not even, some are good some are not. overall, went for that little boat experience, its cute and neat. but flavor wise, will not go there again. read more
