The Suscol Intertribal Council hosts a phenomenal powwow every year. The director, Charlie, gave reverential introductions, showing that these were more than dances, but sacred rituals to be respected. He explained the regalia, from the Shawl dancers to the Victory dance. Since this was on the ground of the Veterans' Home in Yountville, there was respect for veterans&it was very patriotic.
The powwow has free admission&free parking, but be sure to donate to the Suscol Intertribal Council's important causes of promoting mental health, art&job skills among Native American youth. The Intertribal Council offers drumming, beading, sewing, and a talking circle classes.
The powwow blends the sacred with the casual. One can get a Raiders dream catcher, or a Hello Kitty drum, but the dance circle is treated with reverence. The area smells of piñon and there were several "New Mexico: Land of Enchantment" t-shirts. The rules are clarified&frequently posted. Wailaki's Indian Tacos out of Sacramento offers delicious Indian tacos, griddle hot fry bread topped with beans, lettuce, cheese and tomato. Another booth offered fresh slices of watermelon&kebabs.
