The place is small, so you shouldn't see more than 2-3 other customers inside. I came here out of desperation after I waited about 45 minutes for Norvegr to open up but they never did. The lady who cut my hair did a pretty good job. I got a lot of compliments. However, being anal that I am, I have to say I was pretty grossed out about the cleanliness or lack thereof of this place. They gave me a bib that had this weird brown stain on it. The towels were not clean and I hesitate to think whether they even bothered to clean the brushes in between customer use. All I can say was after a wash and haircut, my scalp was super itchy. I read on a craigslist forum about some guy who got a decent haircut for $7 at a hole-in-the-wall salon around the corner from Green Apple. This intrigued me because I'm growing out my hair and didn't need a haircut so much as a trim to get rid of the split ends, which my cheap ass wasn't going to pay $20+ for. On the other hand, I've been afraid to go to any salons on Clement because I don't want my hair thinned out and end up looking like a HK pop star. I stopped by after work one night. It is a tiny place with room for two stylist chairs, a couch for waiting, and all the Chinese language newspapers and magazines one could hope for. There was just one stylist (I assumed Susan) and she was working with a male client at the time, and she invited me to sit down and wait. When it was my turn, I instructed that I needed a trim and a little layering since my hair's so thick and, lo, she did exactly as instructed. I tried a lot of places to get my hair cut and just didn't want to pay $100 for a basic "man cut" at the salons. This place is great and I've been going for 3 years. Either Sophie or Susan cut your hair. I normally prefer a traditional barber as they are most experienced with a man's hair. Susan's salon has become my exception to the barber rule. I don't have to make an appointment and have never waited more than about 10 minutes. It costs $8 for a basic hair cut and I usually tip another $2 which brings it to $10 all in. read more

I've been coming to Susan Salon since my upperclassmen years in high school for my haircuts. I go in and out in 10-15 minutes as I usually get really easy shaves/buzz cuts. Your cut is very customizable and reasonably priced at $8. Popularity has grown and sometimes there are one or two people ahead of me, especially during Chinese holiday season(s). Ever since I was young (and probably until the day that I die), I've never saw the glamor of shelling out $25+ for a haircut. It should be noted that I'm always in for a quick buzz cut--not something among the lines of models. Finding a barber isn't something that one usually gives much thought into, but personally, I like to find a barber that can cut my hair same way, every time. After college, the barber I usually went to had retired (although that salon never told me that--they just said he went on a vacation and it wasn't until my mom bumped into him on the street and found out the truth). After shopping around, I found Susan's Salon. I'm not one to spend too much time in a salon, so the size of the place didn't bother me too much. Although I converse with them in Chinese, they do speak English. It's sad that I've been going here for many years, yet I still don't know their names, but the barbers here all have cut my hair. They know what I want and can execute the same look (more or less) every time. The actual hair cutting probably takes less than ten minutes for myself, but be prepared to wait if there are other patrons before you. Sadly, the price has gone up over the years, but I deem this acceptable because they are adjusting for the cost of living in San Francisco. My go to salon. I would say this is a hole in the wall place for haircuts in SF. They're usually busy, most of the time and try their best to accommodate everyone. Sometimes people would be mad due to the waiting time, but for the price and quality of their work, it's definitely worth it. I come here every time to get a haircut, dye and straighten. For haircuts, $15 bucks for a wash, dry and a trim. Not bad for girls. I usually tip them a few extra though. read more

I usually go to China Town for my haircuts because it's super cheap, but I wanted a place that was in the Richmond district that was pretty cheap. I came across Susan's Salon when I was waiting at the 44 bus stop and saw that it said "$8 haircut". I thought it was cheap enough to try it out. I came here a few days after and my ideal hairstyle is a Japanese rockstar style, which means A LOT of layering and a lot of attention to detail with the bangs. The time I was there, Susan had just opened the place and had me sit down because I assume a client was there already. She was very nice and asked if I wanted a magazine or something so I wouldn't be bored. I don't speak Chinese so it's great that Susan knows a good amount of ENGLISH. As far as the atmosphere, it's a hole in the wall. I am a bit of a neat freak and was very uncomfortable that there was hair on the floor, rust on the chairs, and some brushes still had other people's hair. You can imagine I was hesitant to stay. I ended up getting my hair done by this lady who works at Susan's Salon. She didn't know as much English, but there wasn't a barrier (YAY!). I showed her a picture and asked if she could do it (based on reviews I heard this place was good for short hair so I wanted to make sure they could manage long/thick hair). She nodded and had me sit down. I was a little scared because her nod wasn't reassuring. But oh my, looks are deceiving! She did an amazing job! She would ask from time to time if the length is ok or if I wanted more cut, and she followed everything I said. The hardest part (the bangs) she did wonderfully. I told her specifically that this hair cut had to be a certain length for Halloween and my hair grows pretty fast, so she had my bangs a little shorter than the pic. She got every detail perfect. ALL DONE IN UNDER 20 MINUTES!!!! My haircut came out to be $8. I am very poor and left her with $10 (approx. 20% tip). Would I come here again? It's hard to say. If I can't head to CT for my usual hairstylist, then I'd definitely stop by Susan's. What I love the most about this place= no language barrier, cheap, and great with cutting bangs and short hair. Fantastic little salon for men's hair cut. I went in, around 530pm, right after work, and within 10 minutes I was getting my hair cut with a very dexterous hair-cutting Chinese lady (am so sorry that I forget her name as I write this) but we had a great conversation all throughout, I speak a little mandarin and was able to talk a little about where she was from in mainland China and before I knew it, the cutting was done and it was exactly what I was looking for. Disclaimer: I am a no-frills guy in my mid forties, so take that for what its worth, but it was a great clipper cut on the side with nice blending on top and then I even opted for the wash, which was an added bonus. I tipped $5 and still got out of there, having had a very nice experience, for $20! I almost hesitate to write this review because I want this as my own little secret, but what the heck, the owners of this place deserve some credit where credit is due.
