I did, anyway. So it's wonderful to see two familiar faces when I go to Hometown Hardware. This store is smaller than St. Paul Builders, but Steve and Jerry are quick to order anything you need. I wanted some DAP plaster-of-Paris powder, and it was waiting for me the next time I went in--and at a good price. Steve and Jerry are professional, accommodating, and also very nice and friendly. I predict that Hometown Hardware will become as much a local institution as St. Paul Builders was. And I very much appreciate that I don't have to drive a long way just to pick up hardware and supplies. The location in downtown St. Paul is extremely convenient.

We went in for salt blocks but managed to spend an hour just browsing the aisles. They sell a little bit of everything in Ace, which is why I love them so much. Whether you need a Big Green Egg, a Yeti, or canning jars, you can find it at Ace. They had 5 or 6 varieties of apples for sale that you could buy by the pound. I had never seen that in an Ace but they smelled great and so we had to buy some. There is a black cat named Baby that wanders around the store that also adds charm to a small-town hardware plus misc. store. We found it asleep on the deer corn on our visit.

I went into work early in order to be able to leave briefly and meet the installer. 9:00 came and went...At 9:35 still no installer and no call offering a reason why...we called the store. The store called Chris, the installer. Chris said he "didn't know he had to be there at 9:00 on the dot". He figured "around 9," said he was in South Point and would be there in 5 minutes. Chris doesn't manage time well, South Point is more than 5 minutes away. More importantly, Chris also does not respect other people's time. Chris cost Gibbs the sale of an insert and tarnished their reputation.

That's what VanHook smells like when you walk in the door. VanHook is definitely the local hardware store. Located in a long and narrow downtown building, the store has a variety of hardware ranging from screws and bolts to paint and barn gadgets. Older men in suspenders are available to assist you, and there's something interesting to find in every aisle. Sure, it's kind of unattractive, cramped, and din, but it works. You'll find what you need here. Need keys cut for your RV? No problem here. We even brought in a paint can from Lowe's and they were able to skillfully color match the paint. WIN. This place may not be as big or have as many options as Home Depot or another national chain, but it's local and they have heart. Support them. Give VanHook a shot before heading to a big box store. Oh, and on your way out, lift up the latch a bit on the door to open it.
