If you're prepared to overlook the style of the store, you can expect to find all the excellent books and magazines that are available in the larger Smiths. At the moment they have a good sale on with many of the hardbacks having huge reductions, I'm not sure if this is the case in other WH Smiths stores but this Northfield branch has included absolutely loads of bestsellers and fairly new releases in this sale. As you go in the store you'll see an excellent range of magazines and newspapers, the choice of mags in here is second to none and I can get all my celeb news, a boxing mag for my fella and comics for the kids. I always have a mooch around the paperbacks as sometimes you'll find a book on the shelf which has been unceremoniously reduced in price and then you feel that you've had a real bargain! There's a brilliant choice of paperbacks ranging from classics to new chick lit releases. There's also a decent non-fiction section which included biographies, reference books, craft books and anything else you can think of. Prices for these are quite expensive and I'd rather borrow these from the library than pay over the odds like this. Staff in WH Smiths are generally knowledgeable about the books they sell, I've never been given any bad advice in this branch and whenever I ask for the location of a specific book they have taken me straight there without sending me all around the shop!

This newsagents is deceptively small. It has a large frontage but inside it seems to be the opposite of a tardis. An anti-tardis, if you will. It can be a bit difficult to walk down the aisles (although that's a generous term) if there are any more than one of you heading for the same area in the shop. They seem to be very well stocked with magazines and small bottles of spirits. And slightly less well-stocked with a decent selection of sandwiches. It's pretty much a standard corner shop/ newsagents really. Except that their chewing gum seems to be vastly expensive. Or maybe it's just that I haven't bought any chewing gum for the past 15 years and the price has gone up considerably...

We're talking a fairly small shop (much smaller than the deceptively large store front would have you believe), crammed full of all manner of day to day goods, from cereal to spam, toiletries and cleaning products to newspapers, magazines, and in the digital age, what seems like an especially large selection of pornographic magazines. Oh, and there's a fair bit of booze as well, all in an area smaller than an average office. It's not particularly special a newsagents and doesn't arose any particular emotion in me, but then again, do any newsagents arouse passion ? Answers on a postcard please......

Located just above New Street Station in the Pallasades shopping centre, Newsflow is a small,…read moreunassuming newsagent. However, despite its appearances, don't be fooled. If I'm every after a drink, snack, or something to read on the train, I always head here instead of the much larger Smiths down on the station concourse. Newsflow's main selling point is the surprisingly expansive selection of magazines that they have on offer, with more than their wall space seems capable of holding. The prices haven't been ramped up with the proximity to the station in mind, either (a sharing bag of sweets retails for less than £2, which is competitive for anywhere, even large supermarkets), and the staff are always friendly. Even better, there's rarely a queue, meaning it can often prove to faster to go upstairs to Newsflow and then come back down to catch your train than it is to go to the nearby Smiths and queue for five minutes.

Arden News is a nice little newsagent located next to Somerfield on Weoley Castle Square. From the…read moreoutside it looks quite old fashioned and dingy - actually it looks the same inside but I like it in here because there is a good selection of products and the special offers and promotions are great! There are lots of magazines and newspapers to choose from as you would expect, they will order in various Irish publications at cost as there is quite a large Irish community in Weoley Castle. The newspapers and mags are laid out in such a way that I can see at a glance where my favourite is, the magazines are all displayed in groups so you can expect to find the celeb magazines (Closer, Heat etc) together, the womens interest magazines (Bella, Best etc) together and so on. Arden News also sells a good range of greetings cards which are very nicely priced, much cheaper than the cards in nearby Somerfield and very good quality. They also stock a good range of boxed and bagged chocolates which are ideal for a last minute birthday gift, the prices on these are brilliant and they regularly have special offers on the sweets and chocolates which makes this my first port of call in Weoley Castle when I am looking for chocolates for any occasion. You can buy a cold drink in Arden News from one of the tall Coca Cola fridges, again the prices are slightly cheaper than the supermarket next door so it makes sense to buy your small bottle of pop from here to wander around the Square with! I tend to buy my cigarettes from here, for the main reason that I am usually wanting to buy a magazine and some chocolate at the same time and I like the fact that I can buy all my bits and pieces from here and then sit on the bench outside and enjoy a fag and nosey at what Kerry Katona is doing lately! The ladies who work in Arden News are all nice, they serve quickly and don't tend to stand around chatting while people are waiting. This shop gets busy very quickly and there is often a long queue down the centre of the shop, but it quickly goes down once the women get serving.

As you many know Hall Green is a large residential area therefore there are a lot of news agents so I think what would make Sai news stand out is having a larger selection of food and drinks and possibly sell stamps. I thought the owners were friendly as they gave a good greeting when I walked in. The prices are cheap, which is great for everyone who wants to save money and especially as I am a student.

Who knows...) was lovely - really smiley and pleasant. It was also extremely well-stocked - with anything you could ever want from parcel tape to plastic toys - oh, and plenty of newspapers/ magazines, of course. They also had a great selection of general groceries, and the shop was clean and well-presented. Probably the best newsagents I've been to in the past few weeks. Also, they seem to be very reasonably priced - for example, the chewing gum I bought was only 40p - I've paid twice that in some newsagents....
