In my opinion, there is nothing worse than going to badly stocked shop that struggles to even have the basic of chocolate bars or pints of milk! If you literally need a sugar hit, magazine or a drink then the selection on offer should tickle your fancy. The woman who works there barely cracks a smile but when you're just buying a kitkat.. who cares. Overall, handy little shop that's bound to have something you want for sale. Prices are pretty average, if you're looking for cheap deals you'd be better going to a supermarket.

In my humble opinion, one of the most consistently reliable and excellent local services that the…read morecity of Birmingham has to offer is its newsagents, and an excellent example of this is S & Z News on Oak Tree Lane in Selly Oak. Their range of products is exactly what you'd expect from a small newsagents, not selling an awful lot more than magazines (of which they have what I've found to be an exceptionally good selection), newspapers, sweets, drinks, and a few basic essentials, such as tea bags. All their prices are extremely fair, more than competing with the nearby Sainsburys, and, despite having been in numerous times and been served by several different people, the staff are always friendly. If you're looking for any of the above in the area, then I'd heartily recommend S & Z News.

As you many know Hall Green is a large residential area therefore there are a lot of news agents so I think what would make Sai news stand out is having a larger selection of food and drinks and possibly sell stamps. I thought the owners were friendly as they gave a good greeting when I walked in. The prices are cheap, which is great for everyone who wants to save money and especially as I am a student.

Who knows...) was lovely - really smiley and pleasant. It was also extremely well-stocked - with anything you could ever want from parcel tape to plastic toys - oh, and plenty of newspapers/ magazines, of course. They also had a great selection of general groceries, and the shop was clean and well-presented. Probably the best newsagents I've been to in the past few weeks. Also, they seem to be very reasonably priced - for example, the chewing gum I bought was only 40p - I've paid twice that in some newsagents....

What surprised and exciting me about this newsagents was the sweetie pick and mix that they have! How amazing is that? I really love sweeties (who doesn't?) and when I discovered this I was, well, like a grown up in a candy store. For this reason, I always return if I am in the area to fix my sugar cravings. I have always found the staff to be quite friendly in here too and they have often made small talk with me. The prices are standard for a newagents too. It is definitely worth a visit if you want some sweeties!

A nice surprise then when I dropped in a couple of days ago for a chocolate bar - a Toffee Crisp if you must know - and was immediately greeted by a different man and a tidy, fully stocked shop. With a Costcutter and another newsagents only a few hundred yards away, this shop has to work for its custom, especially as it has no other shops near it. However, it is next door to The Bell, which is where I suspect it gets most of its trade from. A happy little newsagents run by a happy man (he's not the tallest, but 'happy little man' just sounds horrible).

They offer a selection of cheap toys, office stationary and greeting cards. The other side of the store is dedicated to magazines, sweets and a lot of pornography. The selection of dirty mags is quite something, only surpassed by Adult World in the city. I don't care for such graphic material; however I love their selection of confectionaries, so this newsagent is a staple in the Shirley High Street area.

If you are a BIG kid like me you will love this store!…read more Lots of nostalgic games that I remember from being a kid are here - kerplunk, operation, frustration the list goes on! The array and range of games they have here is unbelievable. Lots of games and puzzles for all ages, and baby accessories such as cots. They also have electric bikes and cars, Wendy houses and bikes. The only downside is that if you go here at the weekend, you can queue for a little while and this can take even longer if there are cranky kids in front! If you can't find the game you want I will be amazed!

The only problems I have ever had are when I have returned an item after Christmas and the queue is out of the door! The staff are great though and I feel sorry for them when they are that busy. Also recently found out they do a stock take around March (i think) so if you have ever wondered why they don't have much stock just after Christmas it is something to do with that and not ordering new stuff until after the stock take - was explained to me by a member of staff last year but I'm sure it was along the lines of that!!

Lloyds News has a playful little symmetrical window display of Pot Noodles and paper coffee cups. Inside, Lloyds has everything you'd expect from a city centre newsagents - papers, pop, fags and mags. However, it's the quirky touches that make the place so good. I love the fact they have a £1.00 table in the centre of the shop, selling goody bags of sweets and chocolate. The staff are also friendly and helpful, adding to the character of the place. You'll struggle to find another newsagents quite like this in the city centre or anywhere in greater Birmingham for that matter!

This store also has an impressive range of stationery, folders, cards and art supplies too. The magazine selection is probably the most comprehensive I have ever seen, if you can't find it here, then you probably wont find it anywhere!
