Royal Mile Pharmacy

Royal Mile Pharmacy

Royal Mile, Old Town

This little pharmacy seemed fine enough to me when I stopped by today to pick up a prescription. I…read morelike that it's so handy that they pick up prescriptions right from my doctor so all I have to do is submit the prescription refill request and then show up here a few days later to pick it up. They cover all the basic pharmacy items and, although not overwhelmingly friendly, we're courteous enough. Because of the Royal Mile location and because I would think they are an independent pharmacy, their prices were quite a bit higher than the Boots around the corner. Their package of 16 paracetamol was £0.55 here, whereas Boots' were only £0.16. That said, it is convenient and handy if you need to stop in here, and it didn't seem unsafe at all to me despite what the other reviewer said.

On a recent visit when I nipped in for a pack of chewing gum, the various foul smelling, painfully thin and toothless characters waiting at the counter told me what that dark secret was. Despite the pleasant exterior, the lather large amount of skagheads that visit this pharmacy for their weekly methodone hit makes it a virtual no-go area at certain times of the day. I've worked on The Royal Mile for about six or seven weeks now, and have already seen two rather sizeable, drink and drug fuelled brawls outside. It really is quite astounding that the powers that be send the junkies here, to the city's main tourist thoroughfare, for their pick-me-up. Given that heroin addicts aren't known for their early morning "rise and shine" attitudes, as long as you get here before 1pm you'll be alright, and will find a quite lovely little outlet for all your pharmaceutical needs.

Marchmont

Marchmont Pharmacy is a convenient 30 seconds from my house. Convenient for various reasons,…read moreincluding the fact that I'm particularly talented at losing my toothbrush and they've got a whole colourful selection of those for me to purchase over and over again (I wouldn't want my colours to overlap, now would I?). The people who work there are the nicest pharmacists I've ever met. Back in my universitary photojournalist days I once had to procure a needle for the purposes of an article of drug use in Edinburgh, and though they couldn't specifically give me what I needed, they both informed me of where the Needle Exchange was and weren't at all perturbed by my request. Which is always quite comforting. Only downside here is that, yes, it is quite expensive. For all the girls out there: 1) don't get yourself into this situation, 2) they now give out free morning after pills if you're registered with a local GP. And that's all, folks.

Whenever mildly ill and in need of some medicine, I generally head here rather than to my nearer…read morepharmacies or a GP for some of the over the counter medicine you can buy from here. The staff here do know what they are talking about and you just need to go in and tell them what the problem is and they will recommend what will help the most. With this they are more often than not spot on and anything they give you seems to do the trick. Any visit here is also relatively inexpensive as they will always let you make the choice between the large brand or unbranded and cheaper medicines explaining the differences and letting you decide what you want to buy. With a pharmacy this good, unless you are seriously ill, you hardly need a GP.
