On a recent visit when I nipped in for a pack of chewing gum, the various foul smelling, painfully thin and toothless characters waiting at the counter told me what that dark secret was. Despite the pleasant exterior, the lather large amount of skagheads that visit this pharmacy for their weekly methodone hit makes it a virtual no-go area at certain times of the day. I've worked on The Royal Mile for about six or seven weeks now, and have already seen two rather sizeable, drink and drug fuelled brawls outside. It really is quite astounding that the powers that be send the junkies here, to the city's main tourist thoroughfare, for their pick-me-up. Given that heroin addicts aren't known for their early morning "rise and shine" attitudes, as long as you get here before 1pm you'll be alright, and will find a quite lovely little outlet for all your pharmaceutical needs.

They cover all the basic pharmacy items and, although not overwhelmingly friendly, we're courteous enough. Because of the Royal Mile location and because I would think they are an independent pharmacy, their prices were quite a bit higher than the Boots around the corner. Their package of 16 paracetamol was £0.55 here, whereas Boots' were only £0.16. That said, it is convenient and handy if you need to stop in here, and it didn't seem unsafe at all to me despite what the other reviewer said.

I came in to get some lip balm due to suffering from chapped lips, I was able to find what I was looking for, and the staff seemed friendly with fast service at the checkouts, and help to find the product I was looking for. (Impressive as the checkout area was only small, given the size of the store and the fact there are no self-service checkouts) As a small store, the selection is limited but is decently stocked given their size. Due to the size of the store, the facilities are limited compared to what one would expect from Boots, and offers the bare minimum, while also shutting earlier than other nearby locations, at 6 pm. 3* - OK, good location but much better pharmacies nearby from Boots and rival brands.

It carries your run of the mill needs - from asprin to shampoo - with your pretty standard product selection. Wouldn't be my go-to (as it's small and for shampoo, etc) their selection is pretty limited but if I lived in the area it would easily become my "shoot we're out of" spot to hit last minute in a time crunch. Where it bumps itself up from that wee little three star is the service - so so friendly! I poked my head in the door and was greeted with big smiles all around and an offer to help. That's always worth a four star.

Like most family run pharmacies, they look quite fancy on the inside, but aren't any more expensive than Boots. What's more, you are more likely to find a cure for your ailment in here than having to go through 10 aisles of make-up before you get to the Allergies counter. Boots is great if it's one of the supserstores but their smaller branches are often lacking. Lindsay and Gilmour, on the other hand, thrive on their smaller sizes, so getting a prescription from here is a much more personal experience. Staff are very helpful and attentive towards the local community, which makes the experience a lot more like picking some drugs up from your local GP than a store on the main road. Local pharmacists are a dying breed, which is a shame since their knowledge of products and pharmaceuticals is often a lot sharper than you'll find on the high street.

I have my GP Practise close by in Bellevue. This means I can get my prescription slip and hand it in within 10 minutes - normally it will take about 20 -30 min when the order is ready - even though they provide chairs to wait on, I will wait a bit in a nearby bar or go for an haircut, or whatever I still need doing around Elm Row. They also have a pick up prescription service for further out Health Centers. It is an old pharmacy - well the building and interior is. This contrast a little with the clinical look you're supposed to have when running a pharmacy. I would love it if they used the space and really create an old look pharmacy. Oh well.. *sigh* They do what they do very well. The pharmaceutical assistants are knowledgeable and very friendly. The prices are reasonable and product availability is usually good. They are accessible for wheel chairs and have a consult room / area. In all a well run pharmacy.
