We just signed up with Sunshine Propane and wish we had done so from the very beginning. We had heard from several neighbors that they were a great company but at the time (5 years ago), they were not accepting new customers since the original owners were retiring. After being with another "local company" (Mountain Propane) aka AMERIGAS with service and response time continuously going down and prices per gallon going up, we made the switch this week after AMERIGAS left us with ZERO % in our propane tank after assuring us that we would never run out if we signed on to their auto refill service. It was SO wonderful to actually speak with a real person (instead of an automated phone system) when we called Sunshine Propane. Customer (That's Me) - Service (That's Not Them) Their customer service is dreadful, not customer oriented. Buying Local When we moved here almost a decade ago, we wanted two propane fireplace stoves and we decided to 'buy local.' In this case, it meant paying much, much more than we could order online and have shipped. In fact, we bought local twice, spending about $12,000 between two fireplace stoves and installation. I would have thought spending more than most 'propane delivery only' customers might make us a customer... I was wrong. Just What Is A Customer To Sunshine? They state on their website, "As an employee-owned cooperative, our commitment to our propane fuel customer is to continue to provide quality propane heating services, as we have done for over twenty-seven years." Their site also states SERVICE ADVANTAGES FOR PRIORITY ACCOUNTS ~ Fuel account customers receive priority scheduling and a 15% discount on service work. ~ Licensed contractors receive a 5% discount on materials and installations as well as free pre-occupancy tank usage. In reality, a customer (to Sunshine) means someone is currently on a propane refilling arrangement. I understand that. We were under contract at one time, but their cost per gallon was the highest we found in the area - even though we bought the propane fireplaces from them. We ended up buying propane elsewhere. We Had A Problem, So We Called The Company We Bought From Logically, when we were experiencing a minor problem with one of the stoves, we called them and asked for service. To My Surprise - We Were Not A Customer We asked for a service call, they indicated that they would check available times and call back. They called back in 30 minutes and said, "Since you aren't a propane delivery customer, we won't service you." I stated we spent $12,000. It didn't matter. Trying To Shop Local Results In Locals Not Caring I would assume that since we bought the stoves there that they would service us. Even if we didn't, it seems a sleepy little business would want the additional work - they don't. I Know, I Know It is their business, it is their rules. I accept that. But I will express my displeaure with this review and with my pocketbook. The crew from Sunshine Propane saved the day by solving the most unexpected problem in an RV motorhome. We had the propane tank filled on our way out of town last Thursday. Once on Hwy 3 heading north large bangs, like explosions, happened every few minutes. We got off the freeway and found the hatch on the propane compartment had been blown out. I checked with my RV repair guy who recommended continuing the trip and excess propane would soon be released. That did not happen and the little explosions continued. After seeking help at various businesses we went to Sunshine Propane. The technicians diagnosed the problem as over filled propane tank. They explained how the problem would be resolved then took charge and released us to go to lunch. When we returned the rig was ready to go. They found that the tank had been filled to the 100% level instead of the 80% recommended. The technicians released propane and burned it off down to the 80% level. We were both nervous wrecks when we got to Port Hadlock, but the crew there eased our panicked state and their confidence and professionalism put us at ease. Four years ago, I had to quit a good-paying job for health reasons. This led to some serious financial issues as it took a long time to be able to work full-time again. In the end, I filed bankruptcy mainly to save my home. During that time, I have tried to the best of my ability to pay my bills, however Sunshine Propane, with whom I have been a customer for about 15 years, was a difficult balance to tackle because of the continuing need for propane. At one other time in the past, I was also unemployed, and the previous owners of Sunshine were very patient, and I was never worried about collections. They knew that I planned to live in my house for a very long time and would get their money when things got better. When I got back on my feet, I did not have difficulty paying my bill until my health deteriorated. I admit that my payments have been sporadic between then and now, but I am going to receive Social Security in the next month or so, so was starting to feel like I'd be able to make regular payments again. Now that Sunshine Propane is under new ownership/management, they have been the worst of all to deal with during my latest difficult time. I was actually making progress on my bill, but still the phone calls and nastiness persisted. I talked to them in late March or early April about my bill, explaining my circumstances again as I had in the past, and they were adamant that they would not deliver any more propane until I paid my bill. We had quite the go around on the phone, but they did not budge. I did not budge, and told them I was fine with them not delivering anymore as I would use what I had and then change companies. So, what did they do? They came and filled my tank the very next week to the tune of $204.85 when they had expressly said they wouldn't the week before. I felt at the time that they did that just to run up my bill before I changed companies. Kelly is the person I spoke with. I was so frustrated with this that I mentioned it to my co-workers when it happened. If I was having trouble paying my bill, was it smart to run it up for me when the need for propane was diminishing as spring approached? No. The new company ownership, which I am told is not local, also has a new policy of which I was unaware of that they now turn off your propane. I have over 60 gallons in the tank, and now they are holding it hostage until I pay $380.24 plus an $85 reconnection charge. If they had NOT filled the tank like they said they wouldn't, I would only owe $175.39 at this time and might be able to swing a sizeable payment, if not all of it, in the next day or so. They would not even work with me, and since they think I'm so awful for telling them they could use a lesson or two in customer service, the idea of waving the reconnection fee is probably unthinkable (I didn't even bother to ask). I will be without propane until I pay this bill, which may take more than a week or so now. Kelly said to me, "I wish there was something I could do," like all of it is out of her hands. I don't believe this. In summary, do not use this company if you are from the working class of Jefferson County, WA. They apparently feel they only need the affluent retirees here as customers and not anyone who may have trouble paying their bill from time to time. read more

My wife & I moved to the area several years ago. We where buying our propane from another firm in the area. On their second delivery they dramatically increased the price per gallon. We called several propane services for their prices per gallon, got prices that where less than I had been charged, Sunshine Propane was one of those. They, on the phone mentioned they would like to check are generator out before delivery. That sounded wonderful. They checked it out, It was fine, no charge. We have had a number of automatic deliveries, timely, and their prices have been great. They replaced a battery for me, and were doing that, the afternoon of the the morning I called. You should make sure to have the propane contractor pulls the permits because if you, as the consumer, pull the permits it will shift the responsibility of the work to you and all problems will become your responsibility and some companies do not want to pull the permits so they can use substandard workers and not be responsible for what happens. Sunshine installed the line to the propane tank and also the tank and then fired up my fireplace and tested it. I was told it was fine. Within a few weeks it filled with soot. When I called Sunshine and explained the problem, I was told to just make sure I have a carbon monoxide detector. Then a friend took a look and said something is wrong with the flame, it was the wrong color. He turned off the pilot and suggest I have Sunshine come and take another look. When a tech arrived I was told that it was set up for natural gas but it was running propane in the fireplace though the flame test would have signaled to an experienced installer there was a problem. I was told by several experts that I was lucky it did not explode. When the tech arrived to switch it over he got soot scrapings on his work space and then tracked it on the carpet. Then he told me it was almost impossible to get out and that I would need a professional to take care of it. I would be very careful with your company selection. I am going to soon have the work inspected by someone else so my little dog and I do not get blown into the afterlife. read more

We changed propane companies when we moved and specifically asked them to not fill our tank at the house that was sold - we were on call. Well, they filled the tank and then they threatened to pull the entire tank prior to the sale, which was only a week away to closing and still very cold outside. We had to negotiate with the buyers to pay for the full tank -awkward and stressful at a time when we didn't need anymore challenges. Now, they had serviced our new home's fireplace - it had never been installed or serviced - in fact, never used by the original owners. It was part of the closing deal and I have a copy of the receipt with their logo and an explanation of the work done. The previous owners used Cenex, not Sunshine for their propane. When I called to have the fireplace serviced once again, ten months later, I was told that they found no record of the service and they won't service anyone's fireplace who isn't a propane customer. read more
