This is my kids' favorite park, 10/10! The main attraction is a huge rocket ship that they can climb in all sorts of different ways, and it has great slides too. There's also a separate play area for younger kids, which is perfect if you have little ones. One of the coolest features is a spinning swing where you sit on a rope and hold on while it takes you around in a circle. It's so much fun! We could spend hours here and the kids never want to leave!! read more

This is a super cool playground in Highland Park. My children had a blast running around the three separate playgrounds. I even took a nice long walk around the park. I also saw a dedicated area for skateboarding. The restrooms were clean. read more

My dogs love it there! But people who live in the area warned me against taking my dogs there before sunrise, or too late at night. Coyotes! My dogs are small. My Bichon poodle weighs about 21 pounds, and my Shiba Inu weighs about 24 pounds. My Shiba might be able to fight off a small coyote, but both dogs are vulnerable to the bigger coyotes. The trails are long but not too long. People there are polite and friendly. Many benches to sit and rest, and drinking fountains. Male and female restrooms as well. A nice place to give my dogs a relaxing one-mile walk. I probably drive over there about 4 or 5 times a week. I live about 2.5 miles away. read more

If you're in need of some fresh air, like I am these days, Sunset Woods Park is the perfect place for a walk or run. Though the park is currently closed to those wanting to play on the playground equipment (little kid hands make for dirty play bars, etc) or use the restrooms, the paved walkways make for an ideal place to get some exercise. Some of the paths are flat and some are slightly elevated--just right for those who take their exercise a bit more seriously. Dogs on a leash are also allowed in this park, so you could certainly bring your furry friend to join you. Loads of parking onsite and benches if you need to rest (though I don't know if that's encouraged right now). *Don't forget to practice social distancing. read more

There are a few playgrounds that I would never attempt to visit with both my young kids and this is one of them. But if you have just one kid with you this is a pretty great park. There are 3 different areas, each area geared towards a different age group. My 3 1/2 year old (of course) spent time running and climbing around all of them. As I followed her across all the bridges and up all the structures I found myself wondering why I wasted time at the gym that morning. A day with a 3 year old at Sunset Woods Park is better than any workout! She loved it all, but the highlight was the giant rocket and space ship. I haven't been brave enough to go back with the 1 1/2 year old, but have a feeling he'd be a big fan of the baby area complete with a sand pit, large ship, swings and more. read more

Super fun park! They have a closed off fenced smaller playground for 2-5 and our 13 mo old had fun. They have the awesome swing where parents can sit too and swing and face your little one. Loved it. The rocket ship looked awesome for older kids. read more

This park is AWESOME POSSUM. It has sunsets, woods, parks, tennis courts, baseball and softball fields with nite lights, skateboard areas, its kidscity with a bunch of play structure and equipment, shelters for gatherings and picnic spots, and walking paths. My dog George absolutely loves it and often meets up with his dawgs for hangout sessions. Fun place for everyone: athletic people, kids, socializers, dogs and possums. read more

This is a great park. There's a lot of well kept walking paths that cut around and through the park. The baseball fields are really nice and have plenty of seating space for small parties. The skate park is also really nice. It's well kept and safely maintained. There's always a bunch of families here on the weekend. Sunset Woods Park is a beautiful 38 acre park, conveniently located in the heart of Highland Park, with several different play areas and amenities for people of all ages. There are multiple themed play areas, shelters, bathrooms, water fountains, picnic areas with grills, bike racks, benches, paved trails, lit tennis courts, baseball diamonds, dog clean-up stations, and trash cans. The evenly-paved trails weave through and around the well-maintained park, which has numerous old-growth trees for shade, a variety of plants surrounding the park, and connect the various amenities. The bathrooms are kept very clean, for public restrooms, and all of the water fountains have strong sprays. There's a nice basketball court, next to a very elaborate skate park. In the winter time, they'll sometimes set up an ice skating rink (weather permitting). During special events, they can set up a concession area. There's a small take-a-book/leave-a-book library, near the central bench area. The main section of Sunset Woods Park, and the central pathway, is well lit. The illuminated parking lot is big, with plenty of space for residents and out-of-town guests to park (no stickers required) during daylight hours. I always see Highland Park service crews maintaining the area, police frequently drive by to ensure safety, play areas have soft turf, there's a fenced play area for little kids, and dogs are required to be on leash at all times. There are very few mosquitoes and biting insects in the interior of the park, because the area drains very well. Sunset Woods Park is one of the nicest parks in the area, with the most amenities and well-maintained grounds. read more

This park is a great resource for Highland Parkers, located right in the heart of of town. As noted in previous reviews, Sunset has all the following amenities: playground, baseball diamonds, skate park and tennis courts (in the winter skating rink). Our family's favorites are the tennis courts and skating rink. Great tennis courts both hard and har-tru (clay) courts. Where else can you find public har-tru courts? Fantastic! Problem: Fights over the courts. The parks department has put in a "racking" system that simply doesn't work. The way the rules are posted - someone can rack a court to obtain possession of a court just like ten minutes after you get on. There are some people (you know who you are!) that come on the weekends and rack an end court even if others are open and they will kick you off even if you have only been on for 5 minutes. And they aren't nice about it. Hey Parks Department - Fix This! We love to take advantage of the skating rink in the winter (when it is actually cold enough to freeze). read more

After making the trip to downtown Highland Park for the Friday Farmer's Market that doesn't start for two weeks, I decided to take my son to Sunset Woods Park. I remember it as Sunset Park. I grew up in HP until the age of 14and played little league baseball here. It is an amazing place to take children of all ages. They have 4-5 really nice playgrounds with a variety of playground equipment. They also have tennis courts, baseball diamonds, a skateboarding area, a .9 mile jogging path and two shelters for picnics. A great place to spend a spring, summer or fall afternoon. read more

Great park with no limit of things to do. Play sets in sand for the littlest, a number of play sets for the not as young, and loads of stuff for older kids of all ages. Basketball, tennis, baseball, football, soccer, kiting, skateboarding, jogging and walking all active events for everyone. Additionally, plenty of shelters to rent and places to grill. Also the host to many great events. Everything from concerts, to haunted hayrides, and even the 4th of July fest. Great place! read more

While being in Highland Park from out of town this place saved my sanity!! Each day that the weather was nice I brought my kids here after naptime. There are three playground areas with varying age levels. One area is perfect for toddlers with a small ship structure, sand pit, and swings. Another area is great for the 4 yrs + with a giant rocket looking structure and a space ship with tube slides. Up a hill is a wooden structure that has climbing activities and bridges. A trail goes around the entire park and has a small "dino dig" with small excavators that the kiddos can use to dig the dirt for fossils. At the very back of the park are multiple skate ramps for the older kids. There is a pavilion with BBQ pits on the grounds, but most days it looked reserved for different groups/school events so probably best to call ahead for a party. read more

I've loved coming here since high school for the tennis courts (clay and hardcourt!), the ice arena in wintertime, and the running paths. It's well kept and super convenient to DTHP. The parking lot is pretty sizeable, and there's something for everyone in the family to do! read more

I love this park and walk my dog through it daily. Great place for the tons of activities that take place there too. My one disappointment in the park is, if they can take our tax dollars to make part of the park an ice rink in the winter, why can't the same area be a dog park the rest of the year? It is not as if there isn't enough room. read more
