Gender neutral bathrooms. And plenty in the area,
Angela S.

How many times have you passed by a business or a sign to an entrance, and told yourself you should really check that out sometime? This weekend I had one of those random moments. Instead of passing on by, I finally took a right turn detour and...hello! It was the most beautiful and peaceful right turn I've ever taken. Who knew that a turn off busy Milwaukee avenue would lead to such an incredibly miraculous nature stop? Off the hustle and bustle of Milwaukee is a secret that everyone should know about. Okay, maybe I'm the last one to know, but if you decide to turn right, you'll discover three very large nature areas with ample parking to explore the Des Plaines river, ponds for fishing, three picnic shelters, walking paths, picnic tables, a playground area, and parking galore! Should I go on? Gender neutral bathrooms (lots of bathrooms), recycling bins, and adventure. Granted it was a bit muddy with very wet grass (stay on the path), I will for sure come back here with my hubby and enjoy many more nature escapes. On to the next discovery...

A really great place to go hiking. So many different paths to choose from. Beautiful scenery and just a great hike. We always hear a plethora of different birds, see different animals like chipmunks, cranes, turtles, fish, and frogs. It's a very good time. Pet friendly. Bikes are ok.

I LOVE these trails and could literally get lost in these woods for hours. I highly recommend going…read morein the beginning of fall to enjoy all of the beautiful changing leaves. The trails are nice and wide and make it easy to get around other walkers. These trails are also long enough, that once you move away from the main trail that circles the pond (pink trail maybe??), unless you move over to Half Day Forest preserve (connected trails), you'll very rarely run into anyone else. The parking fills quickly at the Everett and St. Mary's entrance, but you can also park over at Half Day Forest Preserve off of Milwaukee and easily find your way to these trails with a short added mile of walking.

The cafe is tiny and there is always a long wait. I almost walked away when they told me it would be a 40 minute wait but another lady in line leaned towards me and whispered "trust me, it's worth it." I was honestly surprised at how delicious and unique all the dishes were. I've never seen "brothy beans and pancetta with country bread" on any menu before. I don't really eat beans and wouldn't dare order something like that at any other restaurant. But I sure am glad I ordered it here. It was perfect like everything else we tried.

You're also going through beautiful multimillion dollar homes before you get to the actual farm. However, once you get here, you will learn that as large as the farm is their parking lot does not match nor is it directly proportional to the size of the farm. There is absolutely no parking that people are trickling down in parking onto the street and into the residential areas. I'm sure the residents are really appreciating that. If you wait patiently, you might find a spot in the primary parking lot. This property as you can tell online also has a market where you can shop for things but when we got there around noon, the market was quite literally empty and there was nothing to buy, so that was a little bit discouraging. There's also a café on site that was quite busy that had outdoor seating only. And for a full day, this is absolutely ideal. However, the public restroom and the café restroom was also shared with the private event being held in the Haybarn. For women that means only three total slots. And for an event that only lasted three hours nobody from Elawa farm actually maintained or restocked or cleaned the women's restroom. In fact the garbage can was overflowing with paper towels. The stalls ran out of toilet paper and the floor was absolutely filthy and wet. While this place is cute and quaint and fantastic to take more pictures and I obviously took while I was there I do not think sharing the restroom or the infrastructure or lack of infrastructure for restrooms is ideal.

Multi-surface trails - mostly a mix of boardwalk, grass and dirt. Nothing paved. All are pretty rustic with roots and rocks throughout, so if you're running, wear trail shoes! Also, being along the Des Plaines River, it's natural wetland, so the trails can get very muddy after a rain, and stay that way for days. All that said, the trails are very well maintained and easy to follow. Plenty of parking (no shade in the parking lots though!). There's a building that (during summer months, non-COVID times) has restrooms and a water fountain. Also a small farm that's open in the summer. One important thing to note: NO DOGS ALLOWED! Bummer, but it's a wildlife restoration area, so I understand and did not dock stars for it.

We got here near the tail end of the event, so we didn't spend much time inside and went walking along the little trail where they had signs up with information about turkeys spread out through a little loop around the woods. It's a lovely preserve, and I'll bet it's particularly beautiful in the spring and summer. The building is small but sufficient to have some programs and there are bathrooms here. There are a few outbuildings as well; I'm not sure if there are programs there too or not. There's a good deal of parking here. Keep an eye on their calendar to have an excuse to come out, or just spend some time wandering the trails in peace and quiet.
