Sunset Playhouse is a real gem, nestled in the heart of Elm Grove.They have been around for what seems like a lifetime,ready to entertain in so many ways.We had the opportunity to take in a comedy last Saturday night,Nanna's Naughty Knickers. Unfortunately they had a last minute family emergency with a main cast member,but they pivoted and were able to have a cast member playing a smaller part step in and called another to help fill in for the other smaller part. They pulled it off pretty seamlessly and put on a very entertaining and funny show.Sunset Playhouse always comes through and is a true class act and asset to the community! My husband and I took my Mother in law to Nana's Naughty Knickers for her belated Christmas gift. Despite one of the lead performers having a family emergency and some actress changes and having to read their parts, we really enjoyed the show. I was very impressed by the performers doing such a great job even with that curve ball. The theater is clean and cozy. You are able to purchase drinks and snacks and enjoy them during the show during the 15 minute intermission. I would certainly recommend this theater for the atmosphere, performances, and prices. I saw a play at sunset playhouse a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. I appreciated that there was a lot of parking, the seats were comfy, and it was easy to grab the ticket I ordered from will call. Went here on a Friday night with family and thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely more of an older crowd, but there were some younger attendees which was nice to see. Quaint theatre that showcases very affordable entertainment. My Aunt and I attended the Wednesday evening showing of wittingly funny, The Man who Came to Dinner. Picked up our tickets at will call with little wait. Easily made our way to our seats as the theater is small which means there can't be a bad seat in the house. The scene set-ups were simple yet fitting and the caliber of acting was on par with much larger and more costly local venues. The intermission allowed for enough time to use the restroom and grab a snack of chocolate covered raisins (from Fazio) in the lobby. I will be back! read more

While this humor is not for everyone, it is by far, one of the most entertaining and fun evenings I've had at the Sunset. Young Frankenstein was a total joy to watch. The actor portrayal and acting is phenomenal. Perfectly cast . . . the tap dance was top notch and the sets top shelf! In fact, I think I'll see it again before it finishes its run! read more

Went to see the "Christmas Belle's" on a Sunday afternoon with my father and sister. Thought it would be a really nice treat for my dad for a little Christmas present. The Sunset Playhouse puts on an absolutely fantastic presentation. This is the second time within a couple of months that I've been there for a show. It doesn't matter where you sit you're going to have a fantastic time and the view will be just perfect. All of the staff, made up mostly of volunteers are so friendly! If you're ever looking for something to do or a great gift go to one of their shows. It makes for a perfect date night, or present, and it's just great fun. The selections of plays, musical, holiday shows a really fantastic. And the pricing of the tickets is very reasonable. Check about you'll have a great time! read more

Went to see "5 women in the same dress". I must say, the actresses were really good. But.....the play!!! Keep in mind, this venue hosts mainly senior citizens. And I would venture to say, most were over 75 yrs old. There was so much swearing in here, it would've made a sailor blush! Now let's add the talking about sex, extra marital affairs, child molestation, rape, drugs, and more. Although this may have been a progressive play, this was not the audience for it. My favorite theater in the milwaukee area. Top notch productions and reasonable prices. Sure I go downtown to see touring shows but tickets are 3 times more and you pay $20 to park. Nice to support a nonprofit theater doing shows because the love theater. A Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious evening! My boyfriend and I attended a showing of Mary Poppins. This was my first time at the Sunset Playhouse. It is an easy to find location in the Elm Grove village. Plenty of parking in the onsite parking lot. The will call ticket pick process was quick. The ushers were friendly and helpful. The theater is intimate and creates a wonderful space for productions. The cast did a good job with Mary Poppins. A fun filled show for all ages! The musical numbers were delightful. Overall this was an enjoyable evening. Recommend for those looking for an affordable theater experience. read more

This is a very special place! In a metropolitan area with a wide selection of live theater groups and theater facilities, it might be easy to overlook a small but vibrant community theater like Sunset Playhouse. That would be a major mistake, because the Sunset Playhouse has been offering quality performances for decades in the little building just off Elm Grove Road in, where else? Elm Grove. Last night, I had the opportunity to visit again and take in a hysterical comedy called "Christmas Belles" and we'll get back to that in a little bit. The Sunset Playhouse presents eight productions each season, mysteries, musicals and like last night, comedy. The theater building has grown since it started out as a cube several years ago, success has brought expansions to include The Furlan Auditorium, a 299 seat theater. There is also a smaller studio theater that seats 125. The theater company is self-contained in the structure, props, lighting and all. Plenty of parking, too. Free parking, I might add. The main theater could be called intimate, there isn't a bad seat in the house. It can get a little tight if you're sitting on a heavy winter coat. (Note to self, leave the full length leather coat at home next time and wear a jacket.) When I read that "Christmas Belles" is set in Texas and has to do with family issues, it reminded me of a play I saw a few years back entitled, "The Great Red Velvet War" that was also set in Texas and dealt with an intense family squabble. Sure enough, both plays were written by the same team, so I expected something that would keep me laughing all night. "Christmas Belles" did just that - and like it's "sister" play about cousins fighting over a cake recipe, this is a sister act of a different kind, in an eccentric family. Will Elvis save the day? The script is high quality with marvelous lines that were well delivered by a company that understands timing is what makes the jokes work. As much as I would like to, I don't want to give away any of the jokes or memorable lines so I won't tell you that two characters have the chance to steal the show, and the actors did just that. Since I can't tell you that, I would encourage you to go see the play! (It runs through Dec 23, 2018, so you better hurry!) I will tease you with this - if you've ever been in a church pageant at any time in your life, you know what it's like to be involved. But I will also bet that you've NEVER been in a Christmas pageant like this one! read more

Great local theater! Comfortable seats with enough space such that you don't feel too cramped in. The parking lot has plenty of spots. Drinks (alcoholic beverages too!) and snacks are available. The acoustics are also great in the theater. If there's a play showing that interests you, then this is a great venue! The box office customer service is also great. I had no trouble switching Sunday night matinee tickets to Friday night. read more

July 24, 2019 I went with 3 girlfriends to see HAIRSPRAY! Wow, what a great performance! We were lucky to get a great deal on our tickets through a promotion the Sunset Playhouse was running ($14 each). Note, every seat is a great seat in that theater! From the opening curtain to the final applause, my hands were buzzing with clapping. We often turned to each other and said we felt the cost of our ticket was minor compared to the absolute great entertainment we received. The staff and ushers at the Playhouse were very friendly. The restrooms were clean and the bar service was also great. As a whole the theater experience was a "10" and I would highly recommend a night out for all the talent seen at the Sunset Playhouse! read more

Love the Sunset, intimate but not so small that it feels like someone's basement. Saw The Nerd last week, touted as "One of the funniest plays ever written, this extraordinarily inventive, side-splitting comedy..." was not. The actors did a great job with what they had, but my side was not split and this was definitely not one of the funniest plays ever written. In my opinion it would have worked better as a half hour TV style sitcom. Maybe a one-act play. Truth be told it was just too dang long. I believe some of the bad reviews would not be so bad if the play was just shortened.... like half, or better yet, one quarter. It still may not have split my side but at least have tickled it. read more

Sunset Playhouse is a cozy little theater in Elm Grove. My son attended a musical theater class here last summer. It was 6 sessions after work. The kids had a great time and were able to perform a short scene from Grease on the final night. My son and I recently attended a performance of Mary Poppins. It was well done. I agree with another reviewer who said the seats are uncomfortable. After 2.5 hours, my back was quite sore. One other note, my son went to the concession area to buy a soda while I visited the restroom. The ladies there completely ignored him. However, I would recommend this theater for affordable entertainment. read more

Kudos to Sunset for redoing all of their seating! The seats are now wider, more comfortable, and staggered so nobody looks at the back of the person in front of them. The season is announced for 2019-20 and it looks fabulous! They are continuing their tradition of offering lighthearted plays as well as musicals. Their casting, costuming and acting are of the highest caliber despite being a small neighborhood theater run largely by volunteer help. I already attended the first show, Three Tenors, and it was phenomenal. Looking forward to the rest of the season! read more

We recently took Gramma to see "Lumberjacks in Love" on a Sunday afternoon. Although the play was "so-so", Gramma loved it. This review gives it 4 stars if your looking to get your older mom, dad, or Grandparents out of the house for a nice safe, pleasant afternoon or evening! They seem to have a nice selection of plays/musicals and besides, they sell wine and beer so sit back and enjoy a little community theater. When we were there on a Sunday afternoon, there were no children and we were the youngest in the audience but our goal in getting the tickets was to find a Christmas present to get Gramma out of the house and based on that it was a success. read more

I just recently discovered this theater and I'm so glad I did! My partner's family and I have seen The Addams Family and Steel Magnolias there this season. I like the small theater setting and am impressed with the local talent. Somebody on Yelp mentioned the small seats and not a lot of leg room, which I agree with. But that's not a problem unique to theaters, or even sports venues, so don't let it stop you from enjoying a show! read more

This was the first time we went to the Sunset Playhouse in years and will be our last. In a nutshell the seats were so uncomfortable with little if any leg room. I developed leg cramps and the unknown couple next to us left after the first act. The play, The Nerds, was not funny and the acting was very poor. The Sunset Playhouse certainly did not have customer comfort in mind when they remodeled. We'll continue to support the Fireside Theater which has great shows and great acting. read more

What a wonderful community based theatre and a reasonable value! I have been to 3 productions there and have been overjoyed with the level of acting and the stories told. To think that every person you see ( and don't!) from the ticket counter to the stagehands are there as volunteers and for the love of the stage is quite humbling. There is not a bad seat to be had and as another reviewer said you can bring wine and beer purchased in the lobby into the show for your enjoyment. I come and go every year and have yet to be disappointed with any of their plays! And we have been to Fireside a few times, Milwaukee Rep, First Stage Theatre, Broadway Baby, 2nd Street Forum, Brumder Mansion Murder Mystery, a St. Louis, MO whodunit where the dinner guests get to play a part, while trying to solve the murder, and while fine dining a 4 course meal. Winner got $50 to $100, and maybe a free drink! But no cabs were running when it got out at 11 pm, so had to catch a metro type train (one of the staff dropped me off and had to walk down a steep hill and stand in the dark by myself as he drove off and left me to go home! (plus there was 1 couple standing down there that I didn't really want to be near) but ended up taking the train back to the airport where I got the last cab to a hotel chain (not where we were staying), and they called our hotel and sent someone to get me! But the play, the meal and all were worth it and I have a story to tell the rest of my life. I was in plays in high school and our musical director also taught at Marquette so we were exposed to some pretty good training and professional New York make-up artists. We performed West Side Story, Bye Bye Birdie and Brigadoon. I especially love the musicals, even if just singing like show tunes, Beatles, and the Christmas Special, also really loved the Addams Family and can only imagine how hilarious it must have been in a restaurant (penelopes - also really great place, just had lunch with a cousin who treated me for my birthday, and came back with a neighbor for supper same day - xmas tunes, decor, ambiance, and great food, kind servers, owners who entertained us with a singing and Dancing Santa. Drove past Tosa home lights on the way home! Can't wait to call and get seats for the Christmas music. GO SUNSET! read more
