Even as a lifelong citizen of the East Coast, I've always had a soft spot for the on-trend and uniformly excellent lifestyle, food and travel editorial featured in Sunset Magazine -- for 50 years the lifestyle bible of the western time zone. Pages and pages of relaxed decor, cool destinations and recipes worth your investment of time and money. Well, now the term Sunset is more literal than figurative and an unfortunate precursor to trouble ahead. Like most magazines their days as an analog, physical publication seem numbered as once monthly issues are now 6x per year and are constrained by declining circulation that has tumbled far below one million. Long gone are the days when Time Inc. bankrolled their dominance. Now, a private equity firm is milking what's left. Even the website seems static and boring despite their incredible advantage as a once revered avatar of the booming West. This longtime fan will continue paying but my largess may in fact outlast a sentimental favorite. I've long ago forgiven them for bringing Avocado Toast into the lexicon. Hang in there Sunset. Fraudulent offer of one-year gift subscription at Christmas but they want to include old issues from September/October and end new gift subscriptions in August 2025. Should have minus stars to give after my experience. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Their customer service is horrific. Firstly they don't have a phone number listed. Googling it you find one except the recording says to send them an email. So they have no one to talk to on the phone[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I sent an email asking why they are telling me to renew my subscription after sending just 2 issues. I just subscribed in April 2025 for a year[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. The 'customer service' rep. who replied to my email claimed that they're undergoing a migration and that I need to send proof of my payment. He demanded that I send in a copy of my BANK STATEMENT! This is so unprofessional. And I' am sure it's illegal to ask for a customer's bank statement! For all I know, this person is trying to commit fraud. Mind you I already gave them my customer ID number. They ought to be the ones to search for their customers' payments for themselves migration issue or not. Below is the email I received (the person even got my name wrong, FYI): "Thanks for contacting Sunset Magazine! We appreciate your support! We understand the inquiry- May I ask for a copy proof of payment for the renewal subscription paid in April. (bank statement ) for verification purposes. This magazine is a scam. We paid for a 2-year subscription and were charged again in less than a year. We found a phone number that actually worked and sent all the proof of our 2 year subscription purchase in December of 2022. They have never responded nor have they credited the charge despite the proof that we paid for 2 years, not one. The number that worked a month ago doesn't work anymore. Gifted a year-long subscription to a family member for Christmas 2024. Apparently Sunset runs on a new 8 month calendar because expires in August 2025? It was nice to see a magazine with a western theme but the new Sunset is nothing like it used to be. The recipes all call for at least one ingredient that requires a special trip. Very few are quick and easy. I miss the old kitchen cabinet section. read more

I tried calling Sunset customer support once again. This time, I waited until early afternoon PT to call and after sitting for 20 minutes on-hold, I finally got ahold of someone. I'm guessing their help desk is located in the Far East somewhere. The gal was very helpful. She cancelled my account and processed a credit. I was pleased to finally have my issue resolved, but it doesn't change my opinion of the magazine. There is something seriously wrong in their subscription/distribution systems and there is very little content in the magazines (that is if you ever receive it). It's so sad, as this used to be one of the best regional magazines, filled with great ideas of places to see and things to do, wonderful recipes, and gardening advice for your local area. read more

Subscribed to Sunset for 1yr. Took months to get any product then discovered they continued to auto renew without permission, taking money from my bank account. After multiple attempts to contact them finally got call back. They said they would cancel subscription and refund the last deducted amount. That was 3 days ago. Today I find they charged me again for the same subscription period and then bank shows they are refunding the amount for second charge of same subscription, not refunding of prior charge. This is Fraud any way you look at it. This company needs to be shut down and owners charged with Fraud. Seriously considering filing a police report and legal action. read more

I received a promo in the mail for a 2 year sub to Sunset Mag in 2/2024. I was reluctant to subscribe as a few years ago they stopped sending the magazine and I didn't receive a refund. I subscribed again for a 2 year sub for $25 and have yet to receive an issue. I have called the 800-777-0117 number many times. Sometimes I get an agent, and other times the recording says "no one is available to take you call". I have sent 3 emails and left messages but have not heard back. On one call, the agent said they sent the April issue on 5/10, however, I never received it. On another call, I was told my sub was digital and I said, no I was supposed to receive issues in the mail. The recording on the 800 number states that calls are taken 9-9 CST. Ha! I only got only to page 13 in the current "Winter in the West" issue and have decided I no longer wish to get this magazine. It is totally ungeared to todays average "Westerer". On page 6, we now have a garden hose for $195. Worse yet, on page 9 and page 13, we are shown a "snug four season patio". The architect of this home in Golden, CO should be ashamed. This is the most "unsnug", exposed, impersonal, useless patio ever and not fit for showcasing in any magazine except perhaps "Mad Magazine". Please stop my subscription. read more

He was very interested in what had happened, and said that there was clearly a technical glitch at their fulfillment company.  I get it. I have had a subscription for Sunset for over 30 years. I kept it from Arizona to Colorado and now Nevada. I had paid through the end of 2021 but never received a copy in 2021 at all but the last issue I received was the March/April copy of 2020. When I checked the customer service portal it showed I had been receiving issues. The only way to contact customer service is by email, which I did. The response just verified the correct address they have had for over 20 years and suggested I contact the post office. This is so disappointing because I always enjoyed this magazine and had purchased gift subscriptions for several friends. read more

The magazine continues to suck. Peggy Northrop's last issue was published last month. The magazine has had three editors since 2012, first Kitty Morgan in 2012-April 2013, then Peggy Northrop from April 2013-December 2015 and now we have Irene Edwards, who was previously an executive editor at the magazine, but had spent the last two years as executive editor at "Lonny" whatever that is. I along with other family members will be canceling our subscriptions to Sunset. After decades we've faithfully enjoyed reading this magazine. Now it looks as if the quality in each subscription has trickled down to nothing of interest or ideas for the average middle class. The ads always found in the back of Sunset were once affordable options of travel and overnight fun. Now all I see are posh weekend "glamping" places that can cost up to and over $1,300 PER PERSON! The recipes seem to include foo fooy unpronounceable ingredients that the average person wouldn't stock in their kitchen! Too bad this once wonderful magazine sold out to to be like every other magazine on the rack. So happy trails to you, looks as if the nighttime has come upon this once wonderful magazine. The Wellness Issue has great food and drink recipes (already mixed up the lychee liquor tequila martini yum) and interesting articles, well written. I paid for a 3-year print-only subscription in November, 2019. Now, January 2021 I am no longer receiving print issues; rather I get emails directing me to digital reading only. I call Sunset customer support and am first told I purchased digital only. After I point out that I DID receive print issues for over a year, he admits: I paid for a 3-year print subscription that was summarily cancelled by them (no notification to me) and that I can get no refunds for the remaining 1-1/2 year. Never in my life have I seen a magazine supposedly about "Life in the West" be so out of touch with living life out here. Their motto should be "Life in the West, as lived by a bunch of vapid, upscale people from back East who think that Napa Valley is all that matters and day trips amongst the unwashed masses are quaint." One upon a time, Sunset Magazine truly did celebrate life in the West -showcasing the beauty, destinations, and even people of the West. Now, it's magazine of unattainable pipe-dreams and modern elite bourgeois living. Sunset Magazine's originations are historic, and strange. Beginning in 1898 as a promo magazine similar to ones found in the seat pockets of every major airline, Sunset could be found on the Southern Pacific Railroad's "Sunset Limited" rail route, which ran between New Orleans and San Francisco. Sunset's goals were to showcase the West, dispel wild-west myths, and possibly get people to buy some of the vast amounts of land that were owned by the Railroad. In 1914, the magazine was sold to the employees, and became a stand-alone, still featuring articles on life and living in the West, but also including poetry and fiction by authors such as Jack London and Dashel Hammet, along with original art by painters such as Maynard Dixon and Georgia O'Keeffe, as well as it's now traditional "how-to" articles on making life better in just a couple of steps. In 1990, Sunset Magazine was sold to Time Warner, who hired an editor-in-chief who set about "freshening up" the magazine by turning it into a clone of "Martha Stuart Living." Casting aside articles of substance or value, empty-calorie articles about "cheap" two hundred dollar bottles of wine, quick and easy meals for fewer than fifty dollars, the best places to go slumming amongst the unwashed heathens, and Alaskan Helicopter vacations for less than the price of a house began to appear. Recently, my favorite example of this was an article covering inexpensive gifts you could give for under thirty bucks. In the middle of these "gifts" was a box of chocolates that a reader could obtain for twenty-five dollars. Funny, I picked up the same box of chocolates at our local grocery store for five dollars... But hey, when you're aristocratic, and elite, money is no object- right? If you are to contact the editors about inclusion of an article, or perhaps with a suggestion of a destination of substance not involving the vineyards of Napa Valley (such as Virginia City, Nevada), you will be met with a piercing, cold stare, or the phrase "Our readers are not interested in such places." As of the writing of this article the economy is in a nose-dive, thanks to eight years of Republican looting, plundering and the general raping of this country of ours. As you read these words, you can smell the desperation oozing from the headquarters in Menlo Park. Their demographic customer-base is drying up, as they lose their jobs, and the houses they paid bloated prices for (as a flip investments -not to actually live in) lose value more and more each day. Without a doubt, the party of the Aristocrats is over. But denial is a wonderful thing, and it's served like breadline soup at Sunset Magazine. The hurting economy is what happens to other people -the little people. But denial is also like a glass wall, waiting to be broken by the slobbering monster of reality. Sunset Magazine will either get with the times and cater to the real people of the West, or fold. The choice is up to them. read more

I will never, ever, ever intentionally subscribe to this magazine again. I have subscribed to SUNSET off and on for years and last year I thought I would try it again. Not interested in all the super glam spots, decorating, food that requires ingredients that I never stock and very few articles of spots outside of California. And I say intentionally because my subscription was about to expire, I had no intention of renewing when low and behold $21.61 has been withdrawn from my checking account WITHOUT MY PERMISSION!! Granted I got it at a promotional price but that doesn't give them the right to decided for me whether to take it for another year. Was it in the super, super fine print??
