So I have mixed feelings about Sunset Dunes. I'll just say I wasn't a fan of closing the Great Highway. OK that being said we came down on a nice day to get some exercise and walk our doggie. My wife had not come down so wanted to see what the hype and or complaints are about. Long story short she did say a couple times "that's it?" and "Oh that's nice!" so a mixed bag of feelings. On a beautiful day there were quite a bit of folks strolling, biking, relaxing along the "highway". Wondering if these folks used to go the Golden Gate park or not. I think it being a weekend helps the argument that closing the park only on weekends makes a lot of sense. Leaving weekdays for vehicle traffic. I've been down here on weekdays and maybe 1/100th of the people compared to this weekend day. The amenities that were supposed to turn this highway into a park is kind of minimal and sparse. Some skateboard ramps, Kidde bike ramps, climbing octopus, ocean phone booth???, tree stump seating, some picnic benches, cargo net hammocks, rickety street signs. Anyway it was a pleasant walk... about 2 miles end to end. We walked the entire length and back. Plan accordingly for the weather as it can get cold and windy. There is signage noting the fast side versus the slow side. Slow for walking, kids etc... fast for bikes, scooters etc. There actually was a park ranger stopping bikers riding on the slow side telling them to ride on the fast side. That was nice to see.

About a year ago I parked at Ocean Beach and walked down to the SF Zoo, one of 17 hikes that are laid out in a book called "Walking San Francisco's 49-mile Scenic Drive". It must have been a weekend, when cars in this stretch had already been banished from the road, but even then I recall thinking that the footpath here was perfectly adequate and that it could co-exist with cars. As everyone now knows, voters subsequently approved a permanent ban of cars here and what had been a weekend thing is now a permanent thing (for which Supervisor Joel Engardio recently lost his job). The whole thing is now San Francisco's newest park and it's been rebranded as Sunset Dunes which sounds not unlike the name of a retirement community in Arizona. I checked out the new park on a recent Tuesday and found it to be - well - a path. The same path that was previously open to all on weekends. This path sits, for most of its length, beside sand dunes which block your view of the ocean. As if to make up for that, change is continuous here, as the city tries to determine exactly what this park should now look like and include. To date they've added some seating, art features (sculpture, murals), hammocks, a skate-boarding area, and - my favorite part - signage telling you how far you are from nearby businesses, which is handy if you're walking this path - er, park - hungry. I neither love nor hate this new park. On the day I visited it seemed to be well-used which is what I'd hope, were I going to randomly close off any existing street to cars. I do think a future improvement should include making a dedicated lane for people on wheels (i.e. pedal-powered and motorized bikes) to ensure greater safety for pedestrians. I also think there should be as many beach entry points as possible. I don't think that it was necessary to turn this whole stretch into a park but what's done is done. This is a park that I'd only choose to go to were I looking to walk (or bike), not hang out or throw down a blanket and break out the Frisbee.

GO PLAY IN THE STREET. No really, that's what this was. A street. They've installed art/a playground at the end of the Great Highway at Sloat so it's not really accessible to cars anymore. They still have a traffic signal....to cross the busy closed road to get to the sand. The high was in the mid 60s so wear appropriate clothing even when it's 90F+ nearby. The set of lanes nearest the water is for walking pedestrians on the set further from the water is for cyclists. Cute emblems painted on the road indicate that it's for use by skateboarders as well as wildlife like ducks and other birds. (SHARED logo) Closer to the zoo, smaller statues of giraffes stood in the road. Go play in the street. It's a good time.

Sunset Dunes is a giant park, currently still in progress, stretching for a little over two miles along Ocean Beach and the Great Highway in SF, from Lincoln Way to Sloat Boulevard. I enjoyed making my way through the main trail (open to cyclists, pedestrians, dog walkers, anyone except vehicles) and checking out the lovely ground murals along the way, including the crab artwork at Judah and the labyrinth painting at Lawton, as well as the giraffe and octopus sculptures near Sloat, the latter used as a climbing structure for kids. The trail's concrete surface is not as smooth as I would like for skating, but at least it's flat for an easy jog. Sandy dunes roped off but still a lovely sight, multiple pathways leading to the beach, and the soothing sounds of the ocean waves just steps away. I also love that every street crossing includes a list of eateries and businesses that can be found nearby, and how many blocks, in case visitors want to make a stop. In addition, the park offers several restroom buildings for convenience.

I like joy. Cities are for people not cars. Ignore the narrow-minded people who don't like change and don't like happiness. Sunset Dunes is more than a park with great views. Our city is so lucky to be able to access a beach and a park via multiple public transit lines! Yes it can get windy, but European beaches also get cold--just bring a jacket and a blanket, and the beach does have fire pits in the summer. I love biking and running and walking and seeing families and older people enjoying Sunset Dunes. I see older Asian grandmas who remind me of my own doing tai chi and walking with their friends. Studies have shown that driving a car makes you unhappier so I'm glad now people can access this great stretch of land without a car! Also, car insurance is not cheap and makes cars limited to those with the means to purchase them. Bikes and buses and walking on foot are so much cheaper, more accessible, social, and healthy for the mind and body. The park also has yoga classes, live music, DJs, kids selling cookies and treats, and more. It's lively and feels revitalized. Everyone can use it and enjoy the community. It's also nice to have this long bike thoroughfare so parents can take their kids to school on cargo bikes and others can get to work and around safely without having to worry about auto fatalities. There's new art exhibits and different activities each weekend so if you like seeing happy people of all ages and backgrounds and demographics, check it out!

Permanently closing the Upper Great Highway was quite a big deal, and the passage of Proposition K last November sealed the deal. I totally get the naysayers' perspective of local residents who felt the closure would curtail their navigation options. At the same time, the writing has been on the wall as it was already closed on weekends, holidays, and basically any time the dunes spilled over to the pavement. This route is not foreign to me. I've frequently taken the N-Judah MUNI to the end of the line and walked south, whether on the walkway or when available, the highway. Then I took the L-Taraval line back home. Since it officially opened earlier this month, I have followed the same routine a couple of times now because that covers most of the park which spans the oceanfront between Lincoln and Sloat. It's still in a transitional period between abandoned roadway and full-fledged park. What I first noticed were the addition of rustic seating areas at Judah, Noriega, and Taraval. Along the way were sculptures and other public art pieces at periodic points. New panoramic murals have been painted on the ocean-facing walls of the classical revival restroom buildings at Judah and Taraval, as well as ground murals of marine life and local landmarks at various random spots. It's worthwhile even if you're not an Outer Sunset resident. RELATED - Exploring the Sunset? Here's my collection of places l've patronized and reviewed: https://bit.ly/2El8elJ

When this was just the great highway I loved the days when it would be shut down to traffic. Now I can walk on a flat road. I loved the walking path but let's say I had a tendency to fall on my butt.

It is hard not to like the newly launched "Sunset Dunes". For two miles, you can walk, bike, roller skate, or whatever you want with a view of the Pacific Ocean much of the way to the side. As of now, there are just a few murals on the road and on the walls of select objects on the residential side of the walk. Along with signposts here and there, it all adds up to a nice beach vibe. Objects d'art like a giant octopus and giraffes have sprung up, with more to come in the future. But the best art is the natural canvas painted on the sea, sky, and sand dunes around you!

Steeped in ongoing controversy and covered in sand, the latest park to open in San Francisco stretches across a beloved area already familiar to many. Many come to enjoy a romantic stroll along the beach and enjoy the sunny days with a clear, picturesque sunset. Bikers, walkers, joggers, runners, strollers, roller skaters, skateboarders, and scooters roam the paths. There are those who are familiar with the history and the scenery, but there is something new afoot as the smell of remodeling is in the air. Park amenities have already been installed and include the eye-catching, giant octopus sculpture, many murals, social areas with lounge seating, an area for fitness, and more art. Then there are the grayish days or afternoons when the fog rolls in and the horizon is covered by a wall of fog, or it could just be a dreary day with clouds blotting out the sun. The coastal winds kick up the sand, whip around jackets and scarves, and shake the houses or cars in the area. No longer do cars fly by on The Great Highway to be blasted by waves of sand or wind anymore. Alas, this is a reprieve, a breath of fresh air. Rather, people take public transportation, park in the neighborhoods next door, or just walk on over or through this park to get to the beach. People have been bringing picnic essentials or takeout from local restaurants that have traditional Chinese food or beach cafe vibes. All in all, it is and has been a beautiful, lovely place, but now we can call it a park. Love it or hate it. Nature doesn't care about your opinions. The sands go rolling on.

Mount Sutro Tower is the giant city compass on the Hill of San Francisco. Doing the San Francisco geography the West Wing part of the city is the Sunset District just look at any map and it is the heart of the city in under 47 square miles of San Francisco terrain surrounded by water. The Sunset Strip of San Francisco has expanded causing some neighborhood NIMBY ( not in my backyard) controversy. The Sunset Dunes the latest addition to the Sunset Strip is now a walkable path on the old Great Highway .This open space is a place to go for a walk and bike or enjoy the Ocean Beach water and sand. There is also lots of places to enjoy a drink and meal around the Sunset Dunes. There is signage with arrows pointing like a compass to different businesses in the Sunset from Irving to Taraval for visitors. IYKYK San Francisco natives like me don't need the signs but if you are ITK ( In the Know) you also don't bring a sandwich to lay on the sand on a windy day because the Sunset Dunes will become the Sand Dunes in Sand ( San) Francisco. Some days it's so windy if you are wearing a hat it may fly off your head because of the wind ( No cap). Best go to Golden Gate Park with that sandwich. Although Las Vegas may have the Vegas Strip but it's surrounded by desert sand and Los Angeles may have the Sunset Strip but is surrounded with traffic. San Francisco Sunset Strip is walking distance to the sand where the sun sets by the big beautiful sea. Come take a stroll at the Sunset Strip latest addition during the Summer of Love and spend the afternoon having drinks and listening to your favorite jam or pop tune It's Summer in the city and it's almost the end of June but this space is available all four seasons in San Francisco's Sunset Strip at the Sunset Dune

I love living in San Francisco. Just a few miles from home and you can experience nature at its best . The Sunrise and Sunset are both amazing and magical. The meeting of the Ocean And The Sky is unbelievable. The Ocean Breeze is heartwarming and healing. Walking in the sand is a really a great grounding experience and swaying with the wind is a great feeling. There are places where you could sit when you become tired and unique food places are available to enjoy. Thank You Mother Nature.

Of all the San Francisco parks I have visited, this one is my favorite. It's like a Pacific Ocean-adjacent high line, or at least has the potential to be that iconic of a tourist attraction for San Francisco. It was a joy to see hundreds of people of all ages, both neighbors and strangers, playing, walking, scooting, running next to the gorgeous ocean views. The air felt noticeably clean. The art was gorgeous. And! I discovered many Sunset businesses I wouldn't have otherwise. I went to Andytown, Palm City, Blackbird, and Case for Making all in one day since I was already out there for Sunset Dunes. What a treat for the city.

Two miles and 50 acres of new park for the people of San Francisco! Opening day was today Saturday April 12. This stretch of former highway is now open for bikers and pedestrians everyday and features amazing large scale art pieces just like nearby JFK. A treasure to behold and cherish for generations to come

The layout is more challenging and perfect for little explorers who love to climb, balance, and stay active. My 3-year-old always finds something new to do, and it keeps them engaged for a long time. I also appreciate that babies aren't left out--there are designated areas where younger kids can safely play too. The restroom is conveniently located and clean, which is a big plus for families.
