As a recent transplant here from TN, I am excited to be a part of the Sunset Beach community. I'm doing my best to find ways to integrate with the rest of the locals. One of the first things I did was purchase an annual fishing pass at this pier. What I've found since is a very friendly group of people who enjoy the opportunity to live and work by the ocean. So far every interaction with staff is nothing but friendly and welcoming. I take a chair, a cooler, and a fishing pole and spend mornings relaxing over the water. It would take a lot of this to hurt a man. I haven't tried the food so can't comment on it. This is a family owned business. It's not public so it's not free. Duh. Without an annual pass It costs $10 to fish and $1 to walk. I can't see where that is out of anyone's reach and it helps keep the pier open and clean. Highly recommend you swing by and check it out. If you are pleasant and friendly you will receive the same in kind. Every time. read more

Walked up to park opening and read all signs and also did advance research online to make sure dogs were allowed on the beach. Signs said dogs must be kept on leash and owners must clean up after them. No problem, standard operating procedure for us. Pet policy online stated dogs were welcome, so we made the 45 minute trip. Only after paying twenty dollars to park and walking to the beach a beach rentacop advised that no, dogs are not allowed. When I asked how to get a refund on our parking he did not give one damn, not his problem. Cannot get out of North Carolina fast enough. read more

My family and I have been coming to Sunset Beach for most of my life. While I've walked along the pier numerous times, I'd never eaten there before (actually I never really knew food was available). My parents had been once and suggested it as I was visiting. Parking is free if you can find a spot in the lot by the gazebo. I'd say there are probably 75 or so spots, but you'll need to get there early. Beside it there is a dirt lot where you can park all day for $10. I overheard the pier attendant telling some fishermen that if you pay to fish, your parking is free (just let them know inside). The inside of the pier shop isn't very large. They sell shirts, hats and other miscellaneous visitor items. As far as food, there's your typical breakfast (and lunch) with the option to order hash browns and several biscuits (bologna & cheese; egg & sausage; egg, etc.), plus coffee. All of it was very inexpensive. Everything is made to order so be patient. The woman working was so friendly! She seemed to really enjoy her job and getting to talk to people. My sausage and egg biscuit was super hot as I tried unwrapping it! After waiting a few minutes, I bit into it and it was delicious (slightly greasy). My parents were also happy with theirs but said the coffee was a little weak. After eating, we did the historical walking tour which gives the entire history of Sunset Beach. You walk along the first half of the pier and read 20 signs that detail how Mannon Gore purchased the land in 1955 and, over many years, helped get the beach to where it is today. Do you know there is a Civil War blockade runner buried underneath the pier? All of the information was super interesting and I can't recommend it enough! Do be prepared for bunches of birds to be around...they sit on the pier rails. This would be a fun morning excursion for a family (or date if you want to read the signs)! read more

Wow. My interaction here was awful. One - the food prices were expensive for bad pier food. Two - the staff were incredibly rude. Three - the grill was broken and that's fine but we asked for a chicken salad sandwich and she said all we could have was a side of chicken salad. Why couldn't this be placed on bread for us? Bread and chicken salad have nothing to do with a broken grill. I wouldn't be so upset if the staff were friendly but they were not even close to friendly or apologetic. And lastly - it costs a dollar to walk on the pier.... like what? Why.... What's $1 a person really doing besides being a huge inconvenience to their customers. I'm so disappointed. I usually love to give 5 stars and I'm sad to give 2. This should honestly probably be 1 star but I feel guilty doing that. Don't waste your time or money here. read more

The staff is helpful and always willing to provide fishing tips. We're glad there's a pier and nice people to manage it. Even those who don't want to fish can enjoy a stroll for $1, so we often send our guests for an enjoyable walk and view of the beautiful sunsets. Quick access snacks are reasonably priced too. Paid $30 to go fishing (my husband and 2 daughters/$10 each) and it's so windy my daughter's can't fish - didn't even cast a line. We came back with the poles to put them back in the car and the guy refused to give a refund, partial refund or even to be able to fish another day when they can actually enjoy it. His resolution was my husband can fish with all 3 poles if he wants! Completely ridiculous. I know one pier we will never come back to! Absurd. read more

When my parents retired they told us they would move to Sunset Beach. I was not familiar with it, but it sounded like a good place. Seven years later and we are in love with it. My daughters and mine favorite trip is down to the pier. Whether or not we are underneath the pier or fishing on top, it is always a fun place. The store on the front of the pier offers snacks and a small grill for mid-day snacks. It also has a full bait shop for fishing. The fishing is also great. My daughter loves to go out and chit chat with other people fishing, walk to the end of the pier and sit and watch as the sun sets over the dunes. It is always a fun bonding experience for use to share at any time of years. If you visit Sunset Beach, take the time to walk down the pier. Well worth the time. read more

I am giving them two stars only for their breakfast. I've had lunch from the pier a few times but today and yesterday I was not impressed. The BLT had hardy any bacon and the hot dog today was not good! They were extremely rude as an elderly man with a walker was trying to enter the store and yelled at him to shut the door. He was trying with all he could get in quickly. A few hours after lunch I went back to use their restroom. I thought if I purchased something in the same day, I could use their restroom. I walked in and said I purchased lunch today, can I use your restroom? She said, "I guess" and I said, "is there an issue?" They said your supposed to use the restroom while you eat lunch. I walked out and ended up using the trailer restrooms off the public entrance. Which they are a heck of a lot nicer than the piers restroom. (They were just further) But they are rude and should just have some southern hospitality! read more

I have been going to this pier for about 25 years now. I have so many great many memories of hanging out on this pier with my brother and family. Sunset Beach in general is great. The food here is OK, but the walk on the pier out into the peacefulness of fisherman and water is so relaxing it is hard to describe. My husband and I are new to the area and we recently visited the Sunset Beach. We parked in a handicapped spot and my husband put his handicap sign in the window. We came back after the visit to the beach to find a boot on the car. My disabled husband went to the office to see what could be done. He showed his disabled Vet card to the girl. She said "I don't care that you are a disabled Vet." What a disgraceful way to treat a disabled Vet. He paid to get the boot off but I am so upset how she treated him. After serving our country for 20 years, he deserved to be treated with some respect!!! He fought for her freedom so she could work at the beach! What a disgrace! Treat your Disabled Vets with respect! Terrible! read more

After a bad experience/negative review June 2018, the owner personally contacted me. She explained the situation and as a former business owner I can understand it. She offered to correct the situation, which is great... we were already back home and out of the state. We returned an entire year later, and with no hassle by her very polite employee she held up her offer.... a YEAR later. I didn't even want to ask as it had been so long. I walked all the way down the beach to grab a bite to eat at the pier only to have them close early. I'm not sure what kind of business closes earlier than their normal hours just because "it was a slow day." Judging by my experience, it's no wonder why their business was slow. I will have to truly be in a bind to visit this pier again... and even then I would rather get in my car and drive home than give them my business. Very poor, sad, and downright pitiful service. read more
