My family and I have been coming to Sunset Beach for most of my life. While I've walked along the pier numerous times, I'd never eaten there before (actually I never really knew food was available). My parents had been once and suggested it as I was visiting. Parking is free if you can find a spot in the lot by the gazebo. I'd say there are probably 75 or so spots, but you'll need to get there early. Beside it there is a dirt lot where you can park all day for $10. I overheard the pier attendant telling some fishermen that if you pay to fish, your parking is free (just let them know inside). The inside of the pier shop isn't very large. They sell shirts, hats and other miscellaneous visitor items. As far as food, there's your typical breakfast (and lunch) with the option to order hash browns and several biscuits (bologna & cheese; egg & sausage; egg, etc.), plus coffee. All of it was very inexpensive. Everything is made to order so be patient. The woman working was so friendly! She seemed to really enjoy her job and getting to talk to people. My sausage and egg biscuit was super hot as I tried unwrapping it! After waiting a few minutes, I bit into it and it was delicious (slightly greasy). My parents were also happy with theirs but said the coffee was a little weak. After eating, we did the historical walking tour which gives the entire history of Sunset Beach. You walk along the first half of the pier and read 20 signs that detail how Mannon Gore purchased the land in 1955 and, over many years, helped get the beach to where it is today. Do you know there is a Civil War blockade runner buried underneath the pier? All of the information was super interesting and I can't recommend it enough! Do be prepared for bunches of birds to be around...they sit on the pier rails. This would be a fun morning excursion for a family (or date if you want to read the signs)!

The staff is helpful and always willing to provide fishing tips. We're glad there's a pier and nice people to manage it. Even those who don't want to fish can enjoy a stroll for $1, so we often send our guests for an enjoyable walk and view of the beautiful sunsets. Quick access snacks are reasonably priced too. Get ready to catch your fishing favorites. The wall of glory has plenty of proof. ;-)

When my parents retired they told us they would move to Sunset Beach. I was not familiar with it, but it sounded like a good place. Seven years later and we are in love with it. My daughters and mine favorite trip is down to the pier. Whether or not we are underneath the pier or fishing on top, it is always a fun place. The store on the front of the pier offers snacks and a small grill for mid-day snacks. It also has a full bait shop for fishing. The fishing is also great. My daughter loves to go out and chit chat with other people fishing, walk to the end of the pier and sit and watch as the sun sets over the dunes. It is always a fun bonding experience for use to share at any time of years. If you visit Sunset Beach, take the time to walk down the pier. Well worth the time.

I have been going to this pier for about 25 years now. I have so many great many memories of hanging out on this pier with my brother and family. Sunset Beach in general is great. The food here is OK, but the walk on the pier out into the peacefulness of fisherman and water is so relaxing it is hard to describe. Becky and Marc have owned the place for years and treat the people they know well. Be sure to stop in if you are ever in Sunset Beach.

Unfortunately, we did not see Dolphins but we loved the cruise anyway because everyone was so nice and informative. I loved the Captain. The way he told stories was awesome. I have gotten sea sickness on cruises, but did not feel bad at all on this one. It was a choppy day too. Even thought we did not see Dolphins, they offered a return trip in the next week which we will be taking advantage of. Bianca was so sweet - she kept checking on us and answered questions.

Let me start by saying I've been on the Hurricane Fleet at least 7-8 times over the past two years…read more We always take friends and family when they come to town because, even though dolphin sightings are never guaranteed, the ride itself has usually been worth the $31. That being said, I hesitate to post this because I truly do love supporting local businesses. But with tourist season starting, I think it's important to share an honest experience. The first few times we went out with this company, it was amazing. We followed the shrimp boats and not only saw tons of dolphins, but also got a close-up look at the shrimp boats pulling in shrimp and other sea creatures. They would even bring a few things onboard for the kids (and adults) to see before tossing them back. It made the experience feel really unique and memorable. However, ever since the shrimp boat has been out of commission (probably the last year and a half), we honestly haven't seen dolphins the last 3-4 trips. I completely understand there are never guarantees with wildlife, but it has been a little disappointing. It's still a nice boat ride for the cost -- I would just suggest not getting your kids too excited about dolphins and making sure they understand sightings are never guaranteed. Yesterday, we went on the sunset cruise, and unfortunately it was one of the worst experiences we've had. I understand the policy is that the cruise runs rain or shine, but the ocean conditions were rough enough that I truly don't think they should have taken people out. There were young children onboard, people getting sick, and several passengers who were visibly scared as we went through large swells offshore. As someone who has been on this boat many times, even I was uncomfortable. If it had been my first trip, I honestly would have been terrified. Considering the boat had already gone out multiple times earlier that day, I feel like they should have recognized the conditions were not ideal -- especially knowing there was little chance of seeing dolphins in waters that rough. I just think better judgment should have been used. If you're visiting for a family vacation, I would strongly recommend checking ocean conditions beforehand, because I'm not sure cancellations are considered unless absolutely necessary.

I received a text at 5pm on the 20th reading that the trip was confirmed. An hour later I received another text reading that the trip was canceled due to a mechanical issue with the boat. I called Harvey Wall (boat captain) several times without an answer. At the least Harvey should have made other accommodations for us. The way he handled this is unbelievably unprofessional. I suggest anyone looking for a fishing charter to not book it with Harvey Wall of Salty Dawg fishing charters.
