Our college student purchased the 2011 Subaru legacy from Hans at Sunset Auto, and we have had nothing but issues with it. My husband went with them to look at the car and was assured that even though the car was priced below value, it was due to the previous owner being a smoker and some cosmetic/interior flaws. Hans assured us that his mechanic had thoroughly inspected the car, and everything looked good. My kid excitedly purchased their first car! And it's been nothing but issues since.
First, we acknowledge that anytime you purchase a used car there is a risk, however within 5 days of owning the car, it stalled out multiple times on the way home from work, at night, leaving the kid apprehensive to drive. My husband contacted Hans, who agreed to have his mechanic check out the car again. I should point out, my husband, a non-car guy, did some research and thought it could be the torque converter ( a known issue with Subaru with this model) and mentioned this possibility to the mechanic. After a few days, my husband called for an update and was informed that there was, in fact, an issue with the transmission, and it was the torque converter. He offered to take care of the repairs, and since the kid was already attached to the car, we agreed. Fast forward about two weeks, and the car is finally repaired! Again, Hans assured them that the car is fixed and it had been driven to make sure! My husband and kid went to pick up the car, and 15-20 minutes down the road, the temperature light is on!!! Obviously, it had not been much of a test drive to ensure the car was good to go. We had an appointment with Subaru the next day to have a spare key made for the car, and they did a diagnostic for the kid since they were headed back to school this week. The diagnostic shows the car needs a new head gasket. The cost to fix is about what we purchased the car for. My husband contacted Hans again the next morning, which was a Friday. Hans asked for some time to think through how to handle this so my husband generously gave him the weekend and will call Monday to continue the saga.
Bottom line, this was not a good experience. Communication was lacking from Hans as my husband had to call him to get any updates. The fact that after they repaired one issue, another popped up makes us think that either the mechanic is not great or the car was never for to sell. My kid has to go back to school with no car. I feel Hans took advantage. He had to know there was more wrong with the car than old smoke smell and some holes in the seats.
Husband called today to follow up regarding their brief conversation on Friday about the head gasket and surprises, had to leave a voice-mail. I will update if there is any progress, but as of now, we serve as a cautionary tale.
**Update: Hans agreed to take the car back and give us our money back. We made arrangements to bring the car back and when we arrived at the shop, Hans refused to give us the check until I removed our complaint with the BBB. We let him know the complaint would be dropped as soon as the check cleared. He did not agree, so my husband got in the car and drove home. read more
