    Sunset City

The fact that this place is a tanning salon masks where its true talent lies. The owner's daughter…read moreMichelle is the most talented manicurist I have ever come across and I feel like petitioning Parliament to pass a bill making all women in the North West come here for a spot of pampering. Michelle is absolutely lovely and she performs an award winning french polish in record time, even throwing in a spot of nail art and diamante gems all for £7.50! This girl can work wonders with torn cuticles and she transforms your nails into beautiful works of art. What I like about MIchelle is her honesty- when I recently expressed my WAG like desire for a full set of acrylics, she point blank refused because she would not, on principle damage my healthy nails. For those whose nails are not as blessed as mine though, Sunset City will do a full set of falsies for £25 and infills for only £19. Sunset City also have a beauty therapist on site who will take care of all your grooming requirements and prices are inexpensive: an eyebrow shape is only £5 and there are a range of pamper packages which make for excellent presents. This is a tanning salon with manners, there are three lie down sunbeds and three tan cabs all stocked with goggles, hand towels, flannels, deodorants and moisturisers. Large designer department stores and self-professed "spas" may have the wow factor, but Sunset City has all the know how and talent. My life would be far duller without Michelle in it, and my nails would be lacklustre.

Well yes, here it is.. yet another tanning studio in Liverpool city centre! The scary thing is, for…read moreall tourists taking a left out of Lime Street, this is one of the first things that they will see! A load of full sized oompa loompas parading from its very doors! But still, if you're after a manicure, pedicure, full on pamper day or just a few minutes under a sun shower, this is the place for you to find all the UV delights! Given that this place has huge glass windows showing off the interior and the beauty sessions within, it is very clean and well presented. The staff all look happy and I dare say some of them look very 'tanned'. I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives the closer to the outskirts of the city you get, but it's in a good location for that quick spray tan when you feel too pale to get the train!

Whether you're in need of a manicure, massage or a fake tan, Body Conscious has all the facilities required to ensure you have the best experience possible. They also offer special pamper days which includes a generous combination of treatments starting from £38.50 and going up to £60.50. The centre appears well maintained and staff are warm and welcoming. If you're not looking for a pamper yourself, they do have luxury gift vouchers available which may be the ideal gift for someone special. It is a little expensive but there is a very professional approach to their services.

I don't tan, I come out in a rash…read more As such, I tend to avoid too much sunlight, and as a result I am about 10 shades whiter than a ghost. It's all true. You can see my veins. In any event, a very important day is coming up in a week or so, and as a result, I thought it would be jolly if I had a healthy glow, and hoped that some exposure to UV rays would stop me rashing away whilst on the extra special holiday (my honeymoon to the classy costa del sol!) I decided to visit The Tanning Shop as it's a nationwide chain, and I didnt fancy going into one of the un-manned, coin operated sun booth shops (such as those places which have appeared on the news, having cooked a couple of naive teenagers). I was greeted by a reasonably friendly girl, who exuded a healthy orange glow. I had to fill out a questionnaire to deduce my skin type, and so that she could recommend the best sun bed for me. As it turned out, the best sun bed for me was the Sun Angel. The most expensive one. To be fair, it is rather swish. The sun bed has a comfort cooling system, and adjustable face and body fans. It also has a a aromatherapy mist that spurts out every couple of minutes to make you extra cool and refreshed. There is also a very loud, aggressive voice guide which starts to grate after a while, but for those with poor vision, is very useful indeed (i don't wear my glasses on the sunbed, in case they channel the UV rays and burn me like an ant). Anyway. After two trips to the Sun Angel, I visited again on Tuesday. I burst in the door and said, 'I'm getting married next week. I need to be brown. I have been on the sun bed twice. Why am I not brown?' The orange girl tutted, and explained I needed a couple more sessions, as two really wasnt enough. I ended up buying 5 sessions for £40, which saves you £10, and after my 3rd baking session, I can really notice a difference. Although the Tanning Shop is not the cheapest venue, at least it is manned by friendly, helpful staff, who do have some idea of what they're talking about, so it is perfect for those who have had no experience of non-sun-bathing. Hurray for me, and hurray for my day-glo skin!
