Sunrise deli is a great deli and much needed in Washington Heights. When I told my parents about this Deli, they told me there used to be good Deli's in Washington Heights, back in the 1980s. This Deli might change their mind, I plan to take them there. I asked the employee there, how long has this deli been open, he said a year and 5 months. It is located between 189st and 190st on St. Nicholas, a block away from the 1 train, 191st subway station. The M3 bus stop is also located right in front of the Deli. That's how I found it, more about that later in the review. It is right in the middle of the block, in the same block as Dunkin Donuts. It has a red sign with the Deli's name on it, that you cant miss.
Whenever I'm in Washington Height's, that's where I go now. I used to always use Google to find a good Deli in that area, Well that didn't help because all the places that I found through Google, were not Deli Oriented and were not clean. All you other Yelpers that live in Washington Heights, know what I'm talking about. Well this Deli is definitely Deli oriented and clean. When you go in, it feels like a mini Downtown Gourmet Deli.
I found Sunrise Deli, While I was waiting for the bus in front of the Deli, at the M3 Bus Stop. The first thing I did when I went inside, is check if they had high quality Deli meat in the Deli refrigerator. All I gotta say is Boars Head. They had a nice selection of Deli meats and cheeses. There was a bunch of Turkey meats, Chicken meats, Hams, and Salamis. They also had Pastrami, Roast Beef, Pepperoni, and Bologna. As for the Cheeses they had all your regulars, Swiss, Cheddar, Muenster, Provolone, Monterrey Jack, Mozzarella and of course American Cheese. I love sandwiches, so I know my meats and cheeses. Then I checked what type of breads they had. They had rolls, heroes, whole wheat sliced bread and white sliced bread.
By this point, I was really hungry. So lets get to my sandwich experience. I looked at the meats and cheeses, but couldn't decide if I wanted Salsalito Turkey or Pastrami. I asked the Deli man, "if I could get two meats", he said, "yea whatever you want, it will just be a dollar more". He also said, "I personally like Salami and Turkey with Swiss cheese", I guess he saw that I couldn't decide on what I want. I thanked him for the suggestion and said, "give me Salsalito Turkey and Pastrami". As for the cheese, I knew right away that I wanted Monterrey Jack, I do love anything spicy. After I chose my meats and cheese, I told him, "I wanted it on Whole Wheat with just Mustard, onions, and pickles". They also had Lettuce and Tomatoes of course, which I usually get, but didn't want it that day. Then the Deli man said, "would you like salt, pepper, and vinegar". I told him, "yea". He also said, "you want it hot or cold". I was like, "oh you also make Hot sandwiches". He said, "yea we have a grill". I told him, "what kind of hot sandwiches do you make". He said, "Besides Egg sandwiches with Bacon or Sausage and the Philly Cheesesteak, whatever meat and cheese you want". I knew I was definitely going to come back to try all the different sandwiches.
Anyway he started to make my sandwich, which I chose to be hot. While I was waiting for my sandwich, I looked at the beverages to see what they had and what I wanted to drink. Right next to the Deli which is in the back, they had a nice selection of beer. They had the usual's, Corona, Heineken, Guinness, etc. I even saw Stella Artois, which I usually only see Downtown or Midtown. Then I looked at all the other refrigerators, they had all types of sodas, juices, waters, energy drinks, etc. I saw Naked Juice and Muscle Milk which surprised me a little. They had a great variety of beverages. I also noticed that they also had all types of candies, gums, groceries, etc. Oh I almost forgot, they also had a nice selection of Cigarettes. They might of had a nice variety of products, but what was important was that there prices were inexpensive and even cheap, which you would not expect from a nice Deli.
This might sound like it took 5 minutes, but no, the sandwich was done in less then two minutes. For my drink, I got a Stewart's Black Cherry soda. I was glad that they had Stewart's, which I usually got Downtown or Midtown. I also got me a bag of Wise Deli chips.
I went to the counter to pay. The clerk was nice too. At this point you would think I'm probably going to pay $10 or more because of the variety of products, clean environment, and because it is a mini Gourmet Deli. But as I already told you before, that is not the case at Sunrise Deli. I paid under $7 for everything. So you can expect to get a nice sandwich with a drink and chips for under $7. Cash only, but everything is cheap and there's an ATM. I went back outside and ate my sandwich while waiting for the M3 Bus. The sandwich was perfect and delicious, he didn't put too little or too much.
