Controversial review from Dan who claims that the Anarkali is superior to the Viceroy of India. I'm…read moresure the Viceroy would not be happy with this hastily blurted opinion. I must say I agree regarding Miah's - theirs is a gimmick Indian restaurant (in a church, innit) and the poshness of the venue does not bring it up to the level of the Anakarli or the Viceroy in terms of service and deliciousness. I think the Viceroy is slightly better because I have more amusing memories of my dad's friends asking for 'coca cola' in a really laboured way so the waiters would understand (they speak fluent English). Either way, St Helen's road spoils you for choice of Indians.

Yum…read more The Anarkali is the best Indian restaurant among the many in the St. Helen's Road area, just pipping the Viceroy to the title, and pushing many people's favourite - Miah's - into third place. The Viceroy's staff are far far friendlier, and Miah's boasts a great location (a refurbished church) but Anarkali just edges it for the quality of the food. It really is very nice. Even the Sunday buffet is good quality - much better than Miah's. It is quite amusing to read the Anarkali's menu. On the back there is a big pretentious spiel about how there is (I'm paraphrasing) no such thing as a curry, just the many dishes created by wives and mothers in Bangladesh - although that doesn't stop them from serving Chicken Tikka Massala and the like. I'm also pretty sure that a lot of Bangladeshi vegetarian wives and mothers aren't tucking into massive portions of meat on a nightly basis either. We'll let the Anarkali off though. I used to live 2 minutes walk from it. This was not good for my pot or my wallet.

However recently it has been taken over by new management and has pretty much all new staff with the manager trying to oversee them all. They clearly were trying but got several orders for drinks wrong and took several attempts to order the food. Also they have redecorated in a way that although looking very good, having removed all the carpets and any kind of material to soak up the sound and as such when it is full it's very hard to hear and can be very echoey especially as the music is played to loud. Having said all this it was near the start of the new holiday season (this past summer) and it was a new management team and they were very apolegetic and had a good attitude giving us a drink on the house so hopefully by now they'll have all the teething problems sorted out.

The food here is pretty expensive with the exception of it being in a holiday place but overall I found the staff very polite, the appearance very nice and the food delicious.

See, they are at it again! It's the multiple name game being played on Albany Road... come on down!…read moreBut at least the Tandoori Mahal Balti have integrated all of their names into a string that helps identify it for what it does, which is more than can be said for Yaus House, Chinese Kitchen, Chop Suey etc etc... In fact, they have practically created a sentence, how coherent is that? All they need do now is throw a verb at it, and Bob's your Uncle, (or, Kumar is your first cousin once removed, who you might be marrying if your parents can scrape enough dowry together to make love a reality!). Bah boom! Excuse my slight consternation... but I feel that someone should tell these businesses about the importance of clarity and unique identity... Ah dam it.. they all need a lesson or two on branding! It's becoming increasingly important to distinguish one business from another. With the advent of the internet and subsequent emergence of social media, where user content is paramount, it is easy for a business to be misrepresented beyond all recognition, and banished into the realms of obscurity, purely and simply because people will easily give up trying to make sense out of the disparate information, and will order their takeaway from the simply defined business with a coherent description of what's on offer. The irony is that multiple mentions should actually affirm the business, but if they are all saying different things and using variations on the name, it makes a nonsense of everything! That aside, Tandoori Mahal Balti is a rather fine traditional Indian Restaurant and takeaway, that is very reasonably priced. Service is great, and the staff are as friendly as you like. The Good Eating Guide have seen fit to award them with a certificate of 'Outstanding Achievement' which is displayed in the window alongside the 'Roll of Honour' certificate from Master Chef, (whatever that may mean!)

The standout feature of my visit was the amazing Zaeem in the front of the takeaway. He was incredibly welcoming and went above and beyond to ensure that my experience was nothing short of amazing. His friendly demeanor made me feel right at home, and he was extremely helpful in recommending the best dishes on the menu. He was very Respectful, Polite and his services was First Class. The food was very nice from the flavors of the spices as every bite was a burst of flavor. Overall, If you're in the area, you have to come here for an lovely meal and the opportunity to be served by the amazing Zaeem as he is the Perfect Salesman and he is the Face Of Shaan Tandoori. He truly made my visit one to remember. The best time to visit this takeaway is when Zaeem is in the Front. In my opinion, he definitely deserves a pay rise for his Perfect Salesman Services. 5 Stars for Zaeem and Shaan Tandoori.
