Controversial review from Dan who claims that the Anarkali is superior to the Viceroy of India. I'm…read moresure the Viceroy would not be happy with this hastily blurted opinion. I must say I agree regarding Miah's - theirs is a gimmick Indian restaurant (in a church, innit) and the poshness of the venue does not bring it up to the level of the Anakarli or the Viceroy in terms of service and deliciousness. I think the Viceroy is slightly better because I have more amusing memories of my dad's friends asking for 'coca cola' in a really laboured way so the waiters would understand (they speak fluent English). Either way, St Helen's road spoils you for choice of Indians.

Yum…read more The Anarkali is the best Indian restaurant among the many in the St. Helen's Road area, just pipping the Viceroy to the title, and pushing many people's favourite - Miah's - into third place. The Viceroy's staff are far far friendlier, and Miah's boasts a great location (a refurbished church) but Anarkali just edges it for the quality of the food. It really is very nice. Even the Sunday buffet is good quality - much better than Miah's. It is quite amusing to read the Anarkali's menu. On the back there is a big pretentious spiel about how there is (I'm paraphrasing) no such thing as a curry, just the many dishes created by wives and mothers in Bangladesh - although that doesn't stop them from serving Chicken Tikka Massala and the like. I'm also pretty sure that a lot of Bangladeshi vegetarian wives and mothers aren't tucking into massive portions of meat on a nightly basis either. We'll let the Anarkali off though. I used to live 2 minutes walk from it. This was not good for my pot or my wallet.

I've eaten here a few times when I visit my parents, who live locally. The last time we had a meal…read morehere was on a Saturday lunchtime and we were the only ones there, but by all accounts it does get much busier in the evenings. The decor is nice and comfortable and there's a little fish pond with a bridge that separates the bar area from the eating area. The staff are friendly, helpful and attentive and the prices are reasonable. The food is nice enough. I wouldn't say it was the most amazing curry I've ever had, but it's certainly very nice. They also offer a takeaway service which, as far as I'm aware, is the only Indian takeaway for miles around so is very popular with the locals!

Down in the smallest university town in the UK last week I ended up having to stay overnight. I ate…read moreat this place about 9 years ago and it still appears to be the only Indian restaurant in town. As I was on my own and tired from a 14 hour day I arrived about 15 mins after they opened intent on a quick meal then back to the hotel. Only one other table taken so they sat me down sharpish which suited me. Normally that's when you would be asked about drinks and papads. The waiter didn't ask me but started fawning over the other table. An oldish couple who were obviously regulars were holding court with the older manager and young waiter. Well its not the end of the world and I suppose they can't rely on my once a decade visit. After 5 more mins I started to listen to what was being said and the old woman was being the most vile and condescending bitch to the young waiter. By now they had brought papads and a beer and still I listened. She told him what a good boy he was for bringing them their third bottle of wine, good boy? He was at least 25 years old. Either he just swallowed it or didn't pick up on it. Anyhow I suppose I had better review the food. Started with dhall soup. Bit insipid and thin and can only say average at best. Chicken Madras for main. Loads of chicken which was all white meat. Sauce however was underwhelming, no heat at all. It wasn't bad but again just average. Rice was fine. Saag Aloo was nice. Paratha was nice not to much ghee which is how I like it. Finished with an Irish coffee just as the vile woman demanded the fourth bottle of wine. Bill came to £36 which I thought was expensive. I'm actually down there again next week and doubt I will be be back here. To conclude it would be ok for a one off but I'm glad I don't live in Lampeter for a host of reasons including this restaurant.
