We love coach Rachel! She's fantastic! We've been to many gyms in Tampa bay and this is our favorite!

My nine-year-old daughter had been attending Okami Clan MMA before and after school program for one…read moremonth. The first 3 payments I was overcharged an unseemly amount but after several phone calls in attempt to receive credit and to correct the charges I was placed on a recurring payment plan that seemed appropriate. I strongly advise not to pay with a card. My utmost issue took place on Thursday, February 21st. After picking up my daughter, I noticed she was visibly upset and had been crying. In speaking to my daughter she states she became frightened after an employee, Von Claude Parker began making statements that he would harm her. In speaking with my daughter, she stated Von instructed she and other students in the class to stand with their nose against the wall and not to move or otherwise turn around or he would throw a knife at their back. She states Von then began to approach various children from behind telling them that their parents had arrived to pick them up, which subsequently caused the child to turn around thinking they were leaving the facility. At that time Von Parker would strike each child in the back with what was later identified as a pool noodle "punishing them" for not following his instructions to remain still with their nose against the wall. According to my child, she began to cry silently as she did not know what was happening and tried to remain perfectly still in fear. I informed my child that while upsetting, I was sure Von would not actually hurt a child and asked if she had informed Mr. Parker as to her fears. At that time my daughter stated Von (as well as other instructors) had previously informed the class on many occasions that crying was a sign of weakness and would often ridicule children who they determined to be weak by calling them sissy's. She stated the whole point of this place is to be tough. During the time my child has attended Okami Clan MMA when picking her up, I have personally witnessed Von, grab another child's belly, pinching excess fat while telling the child, "You shouldn't eat cupcakes because you're bellys so fat." My daughter has also stated that Von would tell the class as a whole how "ugly" they were. On several occasions, my daughter has come home feeling uncomfortable with the name calling and "inappropriate" conversations taken place at this facility. On Friday, February 22nd I went to Okami Clan MMA and spoke with the owner Robert Batey (otherwise known as "Sensei"), in an attempt to express my concerns. At that time Robert became extremely defensive and insisted Von (his brother) would never do or say those things. He was extremely rude and insulting to not only myself but my child as he stated, "This is what was wrong with the world today, Parents who coddle their kids." Robert went on to state that I was was being irrational for addressing my issue with him, that this conversation should not be held between him and I but with my child, because she shouldn't be so frail. I found Robert to be extremely rude and both Robert and Von to be unprofessional in not only how they address their students, but equally in how they speak to parents.

This place has been my home for several years now, and I have no idea what other commenters are…read moretalking about frankly. This is not a glorified gym- it is a martial arts academy, where we are taught practical and artful skills. Not how to play dodgeball, or do pushups- how to do martial arts. Master Regis makes sure to teach everyone and work with everyone. I haven't been able to attend classes like I used to, but it's still a familial atmosphere. After rolling we compliment each other, and if someone might be hurt, we immediately ask them if they are okay. This kind of sportsmanship isn't common in all martial art schools (at least that I've been to). Master Regis is great at being the best of both worlds when it comes to an instructor: he emphasizes discipline, but not at the expense of compassion. Rather than motivating us by fear or threat of pushups and running laps, he rewards us when we do well and pushes us to do better next time. I'm not the most athletic person around. I've gotten rusty from being away this semester as well. And even though I'm not perfect or a "golden child" (as other comments seem to be noting that he picks favorites), he still takes his time to talk to me and help me out. He treats all of us the same. I cannot speak for other's and their experiences, but I can certainly attest to my own as someone who has been here for a while. It's not often that you come upon a school like this. Master Regis is not after my money, nor your's. It doesn't make a difference to him if I show up several times a week or not, because if I'm enrolled as a student I still pay the same either way. Yet he encourages me to come in more often and train because he wants to see me develop my skills.

Adult clicks, although most of his loyal customers left him already. My son was bullied for his weight, told he wasn't fast enough. Regis (owner) tried taking credit for my child's hard earned belt and humiliated both him and I. Classes were too repetitive. Attention only given to favorites. I had to get my son out of there. Owner tried to intimidate me numerous times in various ways and any of my concerns were always dismissed. Yes there were positive times in the beginning but have become heavily overshadowed with all the negativity. It became so stressful my son never wanted to go to class anymore. Yes the owner was nice enough to help with tuition when times were rough in the very beginning and I repaid EVERY PENNY but he's trying to hold it over me. Yes my son idolized him for some time but he also thought it was normal to leave classes crying often because Master Regis was just trying to "toughen him up". Sure he provides private lessons, amount you pay for them depends on who you are. There were many long time families that left who were part of his "click" at one point but came to realize what this place is really about. I just happen to one of the very few that has the guts to post a negative review. The longer you stay the more you see and realize exactly what goes on. No, my son never wanted to be on a team. He was not cut, he didn't have to make a cut, he earned every belt he was awarded. Yet after we left this place other parents began to bash my son, a CHILD, who does that?! And Regis was aware of it and encouraged it. So much for a great role model. FYI Regis disabled the ability to post and see reviews on Facebook and he removed his business on google because there were so many negative reviews. If all that wasn't enough, employee was arrested for sex crimes against children and parents were not notified. I'll say again, HE DIDN'T NOTIFY THE PARENTS their children were around such person. There you have it. Make informed decision before you join.
