I recently brought my dad to Sun Mar Nursing Center, where he stayed for a couple of months. We chose Sun Mar again because of the wonderful experience we had last year when my mom was there, and once again, they did not disappoint me. The level of care, compassion, and professionalism shown by everyone at Sun Mar is truly remarkable. No matter the situation, their staff consistently go above and beyond for their patients. Like any place, there were some issues along the way, but what stood out most was how promptly and effectively they handled everything. Every issue was addressed and resolved in a timely and caring manner, and my dad's needs were always their top priority. From the nurses and physical therapists to the staff who assisted with meals, bathing, and medication, every single person played an important role in my dad's recovery. Their teamwork and dedication made such a difference. This is a nursing facility targeting Korean patients. They serve Korean food and many activities conducted in Korean.. The rooms are average but you can't beat the service. The staff are friendly, helpful and hardworking. Even the non-Korean staff have learned to speak Korean, which is impressive! My father has been staying here for over 4 weeks and my family knows that he's in good hands. read more

My mom's health condition is a roller coaster but the amazing quality of care at Sun Mar is remarkably consistent and dependable. They are always at or near capacity, which tells me two things: 1) their patient to caregiver/nurse ratios are lower than most similar facilities (closer personal attention, love), and 2) communities who already know about Sun Mar make sure their loved ones (and the loved ones of friends) go here when they need help. If you are lucky to secure a spot here, your loved one will be in excellent hands. Jun, Andy, Lucy/Julie, Michael, and the activities director always were outstanding and after multiple stays, they have somehow elevated their care and service for my mom and me. Sun Mar used to be a very descent nursing home with staff that seemed to truly care for the residents. The staff seemed personable and caring toward the residents, faring better than other Korean nursing homes. That is until the Covid shutdown happened. With residents isolated from their families, they were left unsupervised, entirely at the mercy of the staff. While I acknowledge that misconduct in nursing homes was likely a widespread issue during this period, my focus remains on Sun Mar, as this is where my mother resided. When the federal government funded the nursing homes specifically for hiring more staff to provide extended personal care to residents during the shutdown, Sun Mar initially appeared to comply. Yet, it soon became evident that these funds were being diverted towards other profit-driven endeavors. I observed a lack of accountability as an entire section of the facility was designated for admitting external COVID patients -- which was an oxymoron in itself: they prohibited healthy family members with no covid, yet filled the entire section of the building, where vulnerable residents lived, with covid patients. I also witnessed a series of significant building and landscape improvements, suggesting a misallocation of resources. And they continued to restrict visits to my mother for years, with the so-called activity director dictating only once-a-week 30-minute visit during weekdays while she hovered over our conversations. When I attempted to hire a caregiver to visit my mother on my behalf, this individual connivingly intervened and turned the person away. All the while, my mother's condition deteriorated, ultimately leading to her death. I have to say that had Sun Mar not been granted unchecked authority with minimal supervision, my mother would still be alive and well today. What can I say? To quote the famous words of wisdom, if you want to see a man's true character, give him power. read more

My mother has been at this nursing home since 2022 and has recently passed away. During her time here, she received great care from all the staff. They were very nice and friendly to her and were attentive. Every time I visited her, the nurses and staff knew who I was and listened to me about any concerns. The nurses' communication was very good when reporting to me about any changes in my mother's care. I will always remember the utmost care she received, and my mother knew that as well. Thanks to Friendly Loving care from Sun Mar Nursing, My mother in law is now slowly walking by herself. she has suffered from minor stroke this year and she wasn't able to sit by. herself. My Dad came to this facility after having a stroke and needed to stay 3 months for rehabilitation. After searching for the best place for him, this facility met all the needs. This place was clean and they have caring nurses and staffs. Daily activities and he was well groomed. Foods are well prepared for each patient needs and well nutritional balanced. Stay away especially if you can speak English. Went for a walk through when I was looking into Korean facilities and thought it would be a good fit for my father. The admitting director and young staff there in the day are very friendly and professional. But beware that the older staff is unbelievably rude. The night nurse would cut off any questions we had and would speak in such a way to my mother that I requested all info would be relayed to me personally. The younger staff cannot stand up to her bc she would retaliate. It took days of us requesting my dad be sent to the ER by the recommendation of his Dr and neurologist for him to be finally released. And when we requested another facility, even the case worker at the hospital confirmed there had been complaints by others of Sun Mar. It's a shame bc some staff were caring and provided great care. But family should not be intimated to ask questions bc of unprofessional nurses. We had to get him transferred bc we couldn't trust the quality of care he received. read more

Sun Mar deserves all the positive reviews as it is truly an excellent facility. My mother has been recovering from a hip fracture surgery for the past month or so after a fall. My siblings and I visited several other facilities before deciding on this one. My mother's dejected mood lifted quickly once she was placed at this particular facility. She's able to communicate with a friendly staff that is eager to answer her questions and fulfill her requests. She loves the food here, too, so she takes photos of every meal and texts us daily. This reassures us that she's getting proper nutrition in order to help her heal quickly and get back on her feet. She also raves about her PT sessions. We notice her progress every time we visit her. First, she had to use a walker, then a cane, and now she's able to walk slowly on her own. We're very excited that she'll be discharged soon and get back to her normal routines. This facility is so Amazing!! My mother was transferred from San Francisco to Sun Mar to physically get back on her 2 feet. While I was in SF with my mother... Sunny was sweet enough to handle all the necessary paperwork yo get the process going so that my mother could transfer in. We arrived late Sunday evening and every staff members just greeted my mother with a warm smile and a great big hug!! Talk about AMAZING!!! Who would expect this from a nursing home???!!! This place is spic and span... extremely helpful with anything you need and to top it off... my mother was fond of their menu !! Today she's at home with us after working with Sun Mar's incredible therapist . She's able to get herself around in the house but won't stop mentioning how she misses everyone at the facility!! I would like to thank everyone at Sun Mar for taking care of my mother during her recovery. My mother was in a car accident and had a fracture in her neck and had to receive surgery, since my parents were old and it would have been difficult for my father to care for her, the team at UCI medical recommended she be admitted to a nursing home. At first everyone was skeptical that she would be okay at a nursing home, but the staff reassured us she would be fine. At the end of her stay, she actually didn't want to go home saying she was being treated so well, everyone was so nice and always there for her, facility had great food, morning sermons, friendly co-occupants, I had to convince her that dad was getting lonely without her. My mom stayed at this facility over a month after her total knee replacement surgery. I have to say we were very impressed with their care, professionalism, cleanliness, and the quality of therapy she received. My mom is very meticulous and can be fanicky. However, she never complained about her stay there. They went above and beyond to meet my mom's needs. Andrew who coordinated her care from the beginnig answered all our questions and checked up on my mom throughout her stay. He went above and beyond to take care of my mom's adminstrative needs. My dad spent 30 days at Sun Mar for rehab after having a heart attack. I did a lot of research prior to choosing Sun Mar. What solidified my choice were Andy Yang (Director of Marketing and Admissions at Sun Mar), the friendly staff, the cleanliness of the facility, and the 5 star Medicare rating. Andy is amazing and truly cares for every patient and their family; whenever he was working, he would always stop in to say hi and ask if there was anything we needed (I don't think it's even part of his job, which speaks volumes!). There were a couple times the AC didn't work, and Andy and the Sun Mar staff would get someone to fix it right away. Before selecting Sun Mar, Andy always immediately responded to my questions over phone calls and texts; other places we visited would take days to respond. We are Taiwanese and Sun Mar is pre-dominantly a Korean-oriented facility. However, Andy recommended that we visit the facility first hand to see if it is something that would be OK for my dad. They have had Vietnamese and Japanese patients in the past and catered to their needs (hobbies, cultural, food, etc.). Everyone who works there is bi-lingual (whether it's Korean/English or Spanish/English). The CNAs, LVNs, and RNs are amazing and were always helpful when something needed to be taken care of. Also, the young nursing assistant still in school (I never got her name, sorry!) who is studying to get her licenses is awesome; she was so nice to my dad and always proactive and patient; please continue in the nursing field because you are going to be amazing! The physical and speech therapists did an amazing job working with my dad. Over the 30 days, my dad was able to go from barely standing and using a wheelchair to being able to walk. And also able to go from a G-Tube to fully eating normally. My dad is basically almost fully recovered (physically, mentally, and spiritually) as prior to his heart attack and I cannot thank Sun Mar and its entire staff enough for giving my dad a second chance at life. read more

I was recently a patient at Sun Mar Nursing Center for 53 days. Since my stay after foot surgery was unplanned I had no time to check any nursing centers so while I was in the hospital I checked on Yelp and was impressed by all the positive comments made by former patients and friends of Sun Mar. I too can say this is a caring, clean and well-run nursing and rehab center. Not only is the staff helpful and patient but they are thoughtful in checking and answering questions (Medicare, "outside" Dr. visits, "outside" lab requests). The cleaning staff was diligent in keeping the room clean and in picking up my fallen trash. The nutrition staff checked on my preferences for food. I ate the offered breakfasts, lunches (Korean), dinners. I am Asian but not Korean so the food was familiar but different from my normal diet. I enjoyed having a Korean diet. The RN's, CNA's and LVN's were helpful and caring. Medications were given on time. My requests for help were always fulfilled if not immediately then in a reasonably short time. The physical therapy staff was awesome-so capable, caring and thoughtful. Always thinking about the patient's best interests in recovery and functioning more normally. Thank you Andy for following my progress from pre-admission to post-discharge. You have super natural powers to do all you do for the Center and for the patients. Thank you Sun Mar Nursing Center. I am 86 years old now and it might not be too long before I shall need help again. I shall return again. P.S. This place was a harmonious consort of employees. I cannot express in words how grateful I am for this facility. When my relative was admitted, the staff made sure to feel he was right at home. The Korean church activities and the delicious food catered to his heritage. The Rehabilitation staff did their best to speak in his native Korean language and were the most cheerful and patient therapists I have ever seen. The nurses work tirelessly around the clock to make sure that patients are both healthy and comfortable.
