After the initial fiasco I has at Sun Foods close to 10 years ago... this grocery store has improved immensely over the years and it keeps getting better. They have a lot of Asian snack items like rice crackers, candy, and bakery goods from local Asian (Chinese and Korean bakeries in town). Produce is fresh from local farms and they even carry organic. They now even have a fresh fish market which has gotten to be top notch. Everything is labeled and fresh and I know what I'm getting. No need to travel all the way to Coastal Foods (Minnesota's fresh fish market) for fresh fish. I only make the trip to Coastal Foods these days when I'm making sushi or a sashimi meal and I need sushi grade fish. Sun Foods does not carry sushi grade fish, but their fish is clearly labeled now and fresh. No more mysteries like when they first opened. They also have a nice deli section too for good pre-made hot food. I am very happy with the big improvement that I usually am happy and satisfied with my Asian Grocery shopping at this grocery store. I live quite far from the store. I only visit the store occasionally. I visited the store last week and made a purchase of about $240.00. To my surprise, next day I found out they charged my credit card twice of my purchase amount. I have never seen such incident before. I called the store the next day. A lady answered my call but then she refused to resolve this problem. She asked me to return to the store to talk to them in person. I told her I am unable to do that as I don't live in the area. Then she said "it is your money and you need to take care of the problem". I argued that I have print-out receipt and you should be able to find out the charges in your system and fix it. It is the store's fault to charge me twice anyway. Well, she hanged up on me before I finished. This is very rude customer service, and very unprofessional. read more

One of the biggest markets for Asian and international foods in the cities. They have canned foods, great produce, spices, seafood and meats along with utensils all under one roof. Lots of brands and a massive collection of groceries. You can find almost anything here. Almost anything. I have had issues finding some stuff here but the staff was helpful. Their meats are not the best quality. Their prices are fairly reasonable. If you are looking for groceries that you are not going to find at your local cub or hyvee, check this place out. As a bonus, in the summer there is a farmers market in the parking lot for fresh locally grown produce. read more

We shop here often , but the Quality standards is VERY low, there's been times they try selling a case of OLD (close to a month) oyster, and try telling us that they were FRESH, they're sneaky, because they tear off the tag that has all the informations , date, time, location .. I can't believe this place have MONEY for a NEW sign and expansions, but can't even afford to replace their shopping carts .. Some have SHARP edges, and they expect you to put your kids on these 5/26/2016 So I was in the can fruits section and notice that a lot of them have a shelf life of 3 years !! Found some that was dated 2014, 2012...!!!! It just goes to show how old stuffs are at this store .. Had to put back ANY cans 2012 and older BACK!! But more are still on the shelves..ready to be sold to unsuspecting customers! 2020, had to stop by since we were in the area, I've notice they remove the second dates on most of their products like meats, so it only show "when" they were package. And learn that most of the old meats are grounded up with meats that are due and repackage. Also they are instructed to not show you certain food tags like those on their oysters, because the rage that comes with the oyster show when it was harvest, which can be almost a month old, if you ask to see the tag, they're instructed to tell you that they CAN'T show you the tag, can't sell it to you if you want to see or have the tag!! Are you looking for exotic meat? Well this place got some. I came here to get some vegetables and walked past by their frozen meat section and saw CAMEL meat. I had to take a picture ( do you see it?). I don't think I ever had one but I have heard Safari Restaurant at Midtown Global serves them and they usually runs out. I wonder if they know this place carries them....I should give them call. Anyways, most Asian stores that I have shopped in are usually dirty and disorganized. This place is a little better than most. It is a big store. I noticed they remodeled a little or made it more spacious. I like to grab vegetables and fruits here because it cheaper than Cub Foods or Rainbow. They carries fruits and vegetables from Asia, like from coconut to hollow vegetables. Seafood section is great. You can get a good deal on oysters case. I forgot how much it cost but I remember my family had asked me to get them once. You can find from live lobsters to crawfish. What this place lack is....the deli. I didn't see much of to-go food section. The location in St Paul has a good size of a deli. Brooklyn Park is far for me, so I don't think I will drive out here again unless I want to purchase the Camel meat. read more

I was at Sunfood few mins ago. I bought some veggies that mention $1.29/lb. but it was showed up $1.49/lb at the register. I told cashier (no.6) that it came up with wrong price then she thrown my items away. I told her I want that item but I just let her know that the price doesn't match with price tag and she must fix it. It's the biggest oriental grocery store in Minnesota. Which means they order LOTS of crap in bulk. Which ALSO means it's a lot cheaper compared to other asian stores. I'd give it 3/5 stars for the cleanliness but... The price gave back another star. All the other asian super markets jack up their price. Sun Foods is an Asian grocery store that occupies half of an old Rainbow Foods location. They have a large selection of fresh Asian vegetables as well as many frozen items. It is way out there & on a friday evening after the work crowd's made its way here, it is packed like a nightclub. It's got what you need, stuff that you never knew you needed & things that you scheme on buying the next time you are there. When I visited them on the same day, I noticed that the meat labelled "fresh meats" was due on the 8th (today's the 11th), and had green spots on the meat. This is the place to be if you enjoy cooking ethnic food or if you're originally from another country and want to find your mother country's ingredients. Sun Foods has products from around the globe -Asia, Latin America, Caribbean, Mexico, Africa! Sun Foods has it all. I could spend hours perusing their aisles -it's like you're traveling around the world in there(minus Europe). Originally this location was a Rainbow Foods, very clean, well lit and your typical American market. Now this place is, divey-ish, overflowing with exotic foods, products, and people. It nearly feels like a mini-village, sort of like a bustling outdoor farmers market -reminding me of la boqueria market in Barcelona, except, that it's indoors. Here are some snippets of some fun things you might find at Sun Foods, huge whole octopuses(super neat!), huge pigs feet, ducks head, chicken feet, camel meat, exotic fruits, random food from the philippines, japanese seaweed, lots of mexican ingredients that I don't recognize, korean kim-chee, and they even have "umeboshi" which is Japanese pickled plum! Never expected to find pickled plum in Minnesota! There are so many exotic products, I wouldn't know what to cook with most of the stuff they carry, but it is sure fun to just look! read more

I stopped in here on Sunday on my way to a party. I had gone to another Asian grocery store the previous weekend to buy egg roll wrappers but I didn't get enough and this place was on my way to Coon Rapids. It was huge!!! I didn't spend nearly enough time in there to explore. I only had a second to grab the egg roll wrappers that I needed and checked out. I'll definitely go back and explore the store though...I could spend a while in there since it is such a big store. On a slightly negative note, there were only 2 cashiers open on a busy Sunday morning so that was a little frustrating. read more

If I could give this store zero star, I gladly would. I shopped there a few weeks back, & they rang up an item worth about $4.97 twice. I don't live in the Brooklyn Park area, so I called the store the following day & reported the overcharge. I spoke with a guy, letting him know I didn't live in the area & would not be able to return to the store for a while. He told me I could bring in my receipt the next time I was in the area, to get my refund. About two weeks after I called, I went back to the store (I usually go there after I get off work) - only for me to be met by a rude girl, who claimed she was the customer service staff. This girl said she would not refund my money, unless I could tell her the name of the person I spoke with over the phone (of which the guy never said his name & I didn't ask him either). Prior to speaking with this rude girl, I had picked up a few items from the store again that day - & yet again, the cashier billed me $15 for an item I did not buy nor ever heard the name before. If I didn't check my receipt right away, the exact same situation that I came to resolve would have happened to me again,, except that this time, it would be a $15 loss on me! I explained to the rude customer service girl that I'd been in a similar situation at least once before in another store, & all that they needed to give me my refund was my receipt - no one asked me for the name of person I spoke with over the phone; but this girl wouldn't bulge. The girl insisted on not giving me money & she also said she would not call the manager to discuss the issue - she said the manager was not at work on that day! Long story short, this girl ended up calling the cops on me. Thank goodness the cops were nice, understanding, & empathetic - they just told me to go back again next time to speak with the store manager about the issue. Earlier today, I called to report the issue again to someone who claimed to be the manager. The guy first had this dodgy attitude when I asked for his name, & ended up hanging up on me. I called right after, a lady answered the call & when I asked to speak with the person who I spoke with earlier, she told me to hold on. I did that & put my phone on speaker, only to hear this lady chatting in the background with other people; while I waited for several minutes on the phone before the line finally went dead. I called back twice, but both calls refused to go through. Customer service in this store is the WORST I've ever seen in any store! And they rip people off of their money by over charging them, and billing for items that were never purchased! read more

I'm being generous when i say this store seems to have low standards. In fact, the problem is it doesn't seem to adhere to any semblance of order or quality whatsoever. I only stopped by this store by chance when i had to go to the bathroom really bad. I got off the freeway and ended up here. I asked an employee where the bathroom was. The bathroom had no soap or toilet paper (luckily I had no need for a stall) and i watched multiple employees leave and enter the bathroom without washing their hands before returning to work. When i entered the store i couldn't believe the smell. It is incredible how obtuse other reviews are in labeling the smell as merely "fishy." It is rank and foul. The food here, even it is boxed i would not trust. I'm honestly amazed a store like this sells products and manages to not get shut down by the government. I felt like i was in a movie because i was just amazed that a place like this gets/keeps customers and actually manages to stay in business. The bathroom was right next to the seafood section so i was plenty able to get up close and personal. The variety of foods available was impressive, but all of that means nothing when they're all rotten. Beyond that, the employees and even a good chunk of the customers are all very angry, aggressive, loud, and generally unpleasant to deal with. I am white and it seemed like every person in the store had some kind of a prejudicial attitude towards me like "oh how dare you come into MY store." I'm glad i didn't need groceries and only needed to use the bathroom. Needless to say, i won't ever step foot in here again. I'll stick with Byerly's, Hyvee, Whole Foods, etc. Sure, they aren't "diverse," but at least you get treated with basic human respect and you know you're dinner isn't going to kill you. read more

They keep it relatively clean and it's not cramped like a lot of other asian stores. They serve many different ethnic communities and have items not normally found at regular grocery stores. Sun foods sells bad meat. At least, they sell bad chicken meat. How can a store sell meat that smells and has gone bad? The thing is, I can totally see Sun Foods doing it and.... they do! I reluctantly supported their business because they carry a variety of items you can't find elsewhere, but after a very, very bad experience with bad meat I purchased from them I will gladly pay more to support some of the smaller Asian shops in the area. Nice variety of food, however, never enough cashiers open, nobody speaks English, no one knows where anything is, the prices never match the displayed prices---always check your receipts. One time I told the cashier what the displayed price was for some sweet chili sauce, he called over his manager, the manager went to go look at the shelf, I accompanied him, he saw the price tag, saw the product, had no explanation, and STILL charged me the higher price that rang up. WTF is that? I hear customers correct prices every time I visit this store. I guess I should've known from the faded display prices that look sun-bleached, that they haven't been changed in years. This place is good to go to if you don't know if Vinai Supermarket down the street has what you need or not. Vinai is more mom n pop where you will get better service and hot foods. Sun Foods is a great place to go if you are looking for ethnic foods. They have great herbs, vegetables, seafood, meat and a wide array of noodles. There is also a section with reduced price produce where usually you can get a large bag of produce for $0.99. The head on shrimp always keeps me coming back. On the weekends they have a Farmers Market with local vendors. This place is a must if you are looking to make any kind of ethnic foods at home. read more

I've lived in NY and CA, so I'm trying not to expect too much. This market serves different ethnic communities, but not enough for my needs since I make Chinese and Korean food mostly. It's more Southeast Asian and Mexican. It's also a little grubby and a lot of the packaged food looks ancient. It's good enough for reasonably priced produce and a few other items in a pinch. Absolutely appalled at the lack of customer service, the professionalism of the staff, the smell of the store and the pricing of the products. When you first walk into the store it recks with a heavy fishy smell. Most of the prices are good value, however, the main reason for this Post, it that I picked up a items that specifically stated that the product was $1.99. When I got to the checkout, I watched the lady ringing up the items I had in my cart, the specific items was 50% higher than the price on the shelf ($2.99). It wasn't a sale item or anything, I was appalled by the two staff employees responses. When I told her that the item was supposed to be the corrected price. She literally said, "Do you not want the product then?" The second person ran with the product somewhere into an office and can back and stated, "You are wrong sir". I told him I would gladly walk him over to the aisle and show him the price labeled on the shelf. He said, that "that doesn't matter, whatever it rings up as is what it is. Do you still want it?" This is the worse customer service and a store I will not be using ever again in the future. I prefer to shop in community owned stores like this one, whenever possible. I only go to Sun Foods for three things: 1. Roasted Coconut Drinks, compared to other Asian stores, their Roasted Coconut Drinks still taste fresh. In fact, I used to hate the drink thinking it was gross until I tried one from Brooklyn Center's Sun Foods. Delicious! We've been going to this market since we move to the area. If we can find any other asian markets, we would never go back to this sunfoods, but sadly this is the only one that is around here. They're rude at times and my fiancee and I found them to be lazy. We asked them if they have anymore of this item and all they did was went around circle and asked eachother and said no. They could of at least pretend to go in the back or make up a lie. LAZY!!! Another time, we asked one of the "employee" a question, and he said "I don't work here", but how in heck is he going to walking straight to the area where it says "EMPLOYEES ONLY". On two occasions I went there to buy fish and have it cut up. When I got home I didn't have the fish I purchased. It was less than what I paid for, I ordered two fish to be cut up and got 3 fish heads. When I called to speak with the manager she stated it happen and no one ever says anything. What kind of food store is that. A lot of the meat is black with no telling if it's good or not. I will never go there again and advise anyone that buys fish and have it cut to look at your purchase before leaving or just give them your money. The manager is the worst I have ever seen.
