At Sunday Market

Flavors were great but I prefer hot dogs with more toppings like some grilled onions, jalapeños, peppers or something. Having the toppings would have made it a total win for me, especially at $8 a pop. Super friendly guy working the truck and we went on Sunday Market.

Sumo Dogs Maui Food Truck

We went to the Kihei block party and saw this food truck called Sumo Dogs. We have heard about this truck before and really wanted to try them out. Now we can!! What a great surprise the service was friendly and fast considering how busy they were. We have never tasted such a delicious dog like this one in a very long time. We ordered Maui Mango Sumo dog Hawaiian style. These Sumo dogs are HUGE!!! Came with a Maui onion sweet bun, mayo, and other toppings I can't seem to remember. Then we ordered the special topping of Maui Mango. Now, there are other options you can order. For your Sumo Dog. Was so addicting we gobbled the sumo dogs down and realized it was gone before we knew it. This truck was the choice we made at the block party. We recommend this truck to try you won't be disappointed, I know we weren't. Unless you don't like all beef Dogs.

These hot dogs are BIG & yummy.

I. AM. ADDICTED. Their hot dogs are basically the main reason I go to the Swap Meet on Saturdays. $8 for a hot dog, you say? TAKE ALL MY MONEY NOW. It's worth every single penny. These island style gourmet hot dogs wrapped in sweet bread each come with Maui onion mustard & sumo garlic mayo. There are 4 flavors to choose from -- Upcountry Guava, Spicy Maui Onion, Maui Mango, & Lilikoi Tropix. The Upcountry Guava is delicious, but my absolute favorite is the Lilikoi Tropix. So, so good. Also, I've never tried it, but they offer shave ice at $5 a pop and have an array of different flavors. If you forget to/don't carry cash like me, no problem! They accept credit cards :) You can find their food truck parked on the right side of the Swap Meet; just take the first right turn as you enter and follow it all the way down. They also just started operating at a new location at the intersection of Kuihelani Hwy & Honoapiilani Hwy and frequent events on the island like 4th Friday in Kihei. Check their Facebook page for hours & locations. *Tip* Be sure to squeeze the hot dog around a bit to spread the mustard & mayo out evenly & if you can't finish it all in one go, ask for it to be wrapped to-go.

I first tried these bad boys at Maui Brewer Festival and they are amazing. At it's core, they are savory delicious hot dogs flavored with sauces, and baked into rolls. But they are amazing. Each flavor unique and perfectly balanced to showcase the sauce while remaining a delicious hot dog at it's core. My favorite is the Spicy Onion and the Upcountry Guava flavors. They are portable, clean to eat, and pair well with a nice coconut porter. The only hard part is getting to them when they are open and before they sell out. Everyone loves these so follow them on social media so you know where to find them, and get there early before they are gone.

We decided to grab a quick lunch on our way to Maui Ocean Institute. This truck just like all the Maui. Food trucks are crazy hard to find. Luckily on the day we were headed to the Ocean Institute they were at stationed at the large intersection where the 2 highways intersect. The setup is similar to Puka Dog in Waikiki BUT much better. The Spicy Maui onion sauce and the guava sauce that topped the dogs were solid! I am nothing usually a fan of sweet toppings on my wiener (no homo) but this guava sauce was the exception. The spicy Maui onion sauce had a nice sweet heat to it but did not over power the sweet bread or sausage taste. Both of these dogs flavors were very well put together. Good quick eats!

Ever since i've been to Wailuku First Friday & had my very 1st sumo dog, I was hooked. I always get the Upcountry Guava Sumo Dog, it's like a bigger version of a hot dog but replace the bread with sweetbread (yum) & sweet sauce filling. I mostly see their food truck at events but when they do first fridays they have a tent booth-first time i went, i completely missed them. I usually have a lot to say when i write my reviews but trust me, sumo dogs are onolicious & I cant wait for First Friday =)

Sumo Dogs tasty, savory Upcountry guava dog with sumo garlic sauce, Maui onion mustard and guava jelly.

A food truck dedicated to serving up savory hot dogs in a sweet bread bun... what's not to like? My favorite hot dogs at Sumo Dogs are: the tasty Upcountry Guava Dog with sumo garlic sauce, Maui onion mustard and guava jelly, and the Lilikoi Tropix Dog with the same ingredients as the guava dog, but with lilikoi jelly instead of guava jelly. Yum!

Totally awesome food truck. Tried for the first time at Kihei first Friday. We tried the maui mango and lilikoi tropix...both onolicious. Our daughter also loved the sweet buns they use. On our way this afternoon to see their new wagon in Kihei to try the upcountry guava and spicy Maui onion for lunch. If you're in Kihei, check them out next to the maui batting cage off the Pi'ilani hwy or at food truck oasis in Kahului! They had their little kids helping out at the trucks too and they were so cute and totally good sales people lol!

I really don't like hotdogs but these SUMO DOGS are AMAZING! I was in Maui one week and I chased them down just to have them before we left. It is owned by a family who is local. The grandma greets the customers, daughter makes the "AMAZING DOGS" and her grandson takes the orders. The guava dog was hands down the Best! If you haven't tried them..they are at the Maui swap meet on Saturdays and at the night market on Sundays at the Maui style market parking lot. ENJOY!

Maui Tropix (lilikoi) at the Kihei Fourth Friday.

Footlong dogs on custom made Hawaiian style rolls. All come with their garlic sauce and tropical mustard. The owner suggested the Maui Tropix which is lilikoi flavored. The taste...broke da mouth! It's one of the best things I've tried on this trip, no joke. $8 is reasonable considering the quality and experience. You've been Sumo slapped, now go get one!

It was a short 5 min hop over from the airport to Da Tambayan Corner and parking in the adjacent lot was easy. All the food trucks are ringed around the central tables and look for the aquamarine Da Soriano truck over by the road. Their food style is Filipino with a Hawaiian twist if you hadn't discerned it from their name. They have a build-your-own-combo grindz menu that you can pick a couple of proteins with rice options or check out the picture menu if you really don't know what to get. My wife went for the combo of Pork Adobo & Garlic Butter Shrimp with Mac & Green Salad, both very flavorful choices. Her friend went double pork action with Chinese Roast Pork Belly & Calamansi Grilled Pork Belly and Pancit Bihon Noodles as her side. The Chinese roast pork belly was as crispy good as any I've seen in any Chinatown. My Seafood Trio had a Miso Glazed Salmon Fillet, 3 Baked Mussels, 2 Shrimp Tempura and topped with Kaboyaki sauce & Thai Chili Aioli. The Shrimp were not the typical panko coated but battered and tasted good drizzled with the 2 sauces. The mussels are topped with a heavy cheesy mayo sauce and baked. Of course, it wouldn't be a Hawaiian plate lunch without a scoop of white rice and a scoop of mac salad. All this wasn't enough and our friend went back to chat with the chef and came back with a double serving of banana lumpia in crunchy spring roll wrap and drenched in heavy syrup. This was an excellent dessert and wrap up to a great lunch. We were so stuffed, we had to skip dinner!

The truck itself is fun, painted with bright tropical colors and scenes, and they seem to be known for their loaded tots and bao buns. I placed my order on the touchscreen outside and then sat down to wait for my food. For lunch on this day I went with the buffalo chicken tots and the Island Piggy bao. The menu described the bao as kalua pork, BBQ sauce, tropical salsa, and pickled red onions. The buffalo chicken tots were described as buttermilk fried chicken, buffalo sauce, jack cheddar cheese, house made pickles, and ranch dressing. It took less than 10 minutes for my food to be ready and I sat down at one of the shaded picnic tables. When I opened everything up it all looked good, but I did notice that the tots were missing the house made pickles. I started with the bao and thought it was pretty good. The kalua pork was super juicy and the bao bun was light and fluffy while still holding together well. The pickled onions added a nice acidity and the tropical salsa brought good flavor. The only thing I did not notice much was the BBQ sauce. After that I dug into the tots. The tots themselves were cooked nicely with a crispy outside and soft inside. The chicken was good as well with a nice batter and the buffalo sauce added flavor while the cheese was gooey. The only thing worth noting is that the chicken was softer than expected and not very crispy. It worked since I did have the texture from the crispy tots, but it stood out. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I would probably not order both a bao and tots again as it was a lot of food, but I would definitely come back for one or the other.

Peeked their Instagram and saw a corned beef and egg grilled cheese sandwich. Say what? Less than 5 minutes later I was texting my order in. Unfortunately, no one actually ever answered my text (please don't tell people to text if you don't reply). Being impatient, I said screw it and just drove myself there to check. They are located in Kahului Industrial in the Ferguson's parking lot, across the way from Lee Bear's. It's a really, really random spot and parking could be a challenge if it gets busy. If it's slow, you could park right in front of the trailer. The family that runs this food trailer is born and raised in Guam and their menu features Chamorro cuisine like arrozcaldo, corn soup, etc. It didn't seem like it to me at first because everything was so so familiar to me, but my friend who was raised in Guam reminded me of how it's heavily Filipino influenced and mentioned that the grilled cheese sandwich was her childhood growing-up. No wonder (I'm Filipino)... Anywho, got my corned beef and egg grilled cheese sandwich! The corned beef isn't like your St. Patty's day corned beef, but more like the Palm brand canned corned beef. The bread was also slightly sweet and was the perfect vessel for all this deliciousness. The sandwich was so tasty and had the perfect amount of meat and cheese. Definitely a great way to start my morning and can't wait to have it again. My friend also recommended trying their corn soup & their red rice whenever it's available. Will definitely try those in the future too.
