I worked with B&N on a project at my rental about a year ago and thought they were fair (not cheap)…read moreand did a nice job. So I called them when my 40 Gal Gas water heater went out and I had to go out of town for work. Normally this was something I would have done myself. I told Alan I did not want emergency service and just get on their next available appt. I did not ask for a quote, B&N had been fair dealing in the past. There was no mention of a fixed rate for a water heater swap. The B & N guys came on Monday around 1 PM, my wife was there and they were there an hour our less (very simple hall closet main floor water heater swap). I got home from my work trip to find a bill for $2665. After falling out of my chair, I looked up the retail price for the water heater and it was right at $1000 if I bought it myself. AKA, B&N was proposing to charge me $1665 labor and parts to have two guys for one hour swap out a water heater. That's about $800-$1000 more than it should have been according to all research. There was no re-fabrication of the area, nothing, simple swap. When I called Alan, he said he "fat fingered" the invoice and charged me for a 50 gallon water heater instead of a 40. That was supposed to make me feel better? And he would knock $200 off for his own mistake. He would not budge on the rest and refused to provide a detailed invoice showing how many hours of labor was included. A contractor who refuses to provide a detailed invoice intends to rip you off. Never work with B&N.
