I try to visit on a holiday or Sundays when metered parking is free. My mom and her family moved to Kaimuki (a very long time ago) from Downtown Honolulu because new buildings and urban improvement were happening. Kaimuki is a rather dry area of Oahu, compared with the valleys and the Windward side of the island. It's "north" of Waikiki, so tourists are more likely to explore here. There's a "Keep It Kaimuki" movement in which small businesses support each other. It's quite a nice town!

That my dear Yelp Associate, is Saturday. The Mōiliili Hongwanji Bon Dance is the FRIDAY before the massive Saturday Summer Festival. (See my review for that one here: https://www.yelp.com/biz/moiliili-summer-festival-and-bon-dance-honolulu?hrid=BfibWk8TVWn0_XKJxMzQ_Q&utm_campaign) The Friday event is a chill sibling of the Saturday Summer Festival, with far fewer people, but with no food trucks and less shopping. Parking is also better due to fewer people, with one of the nearby free parking lots on Beretania Street available. The hot food for 2018 included shoyu pork bowl, chicken karaage, takoyaki (squid balls), teri burger, saimin, BBQ beef sticks, and spam musubi, along with an assortment of drinks. There was also a bake sale with andagi, andagi dogs (think corn dogs), mochi, and cookies. The shoyu bowl was by far the best item, with tender, flavorful pork over gravy enriched rice with a piece of pickled radish. Hands down winner of the night! The takoyaki, which came five to an order, were freshly fried, warm and had a decent amount of squid. A little too creamy for me, but I can see how people would love this. The dressing and flakes were tasty too. The BBQ meat stick was good size and well marinated. Teri burger was an average Bon Dance teri burger, but with a good char on it. Hot food tent takes credit cards as well. Some shopping and games for the kids were on site along with donations for a high school's project grad. Dancing started around 6:00 PM with the regular assortment of songs, dancers, kimonos, yukatas, and adorable children. Dancing goes through 10:30 PM. The Friday event is perfect for people who are more interested in dancing and not fans of horrible parking and massive crowds. Bring a small umbrella as Mōiliili tends to have frequent, but short showers during this time of the year and there's very little cover during the event.

We first stopped at Windward Mall to check out their event, then moved onto Lanikai. We got there around 2:00pm (they were open until 3:00) so we made our way around to the various vendors. One of my friends purchased a couple of great finds for her apartment, so it made our trip worthwhile. The vendors were all very friendly and some had sweet dogs to pet.

A giant wave... It…read moregot me at "hello" whenever I drive up and down Waiakamilo Road and you just can't miss it though it's behind a chained fenced surrounded by parked cars you can never really get a clear view of it but this stunning work of art is something so worth seeing or at least drive by it for a closer look. I'm clueless of the details like my friend Nadine C but know that it's always so stunning to get a quick glance at regardless and I did have that chance as I was dropping off some cans for recycling and to see that it was located right next to the wall which was really cool. Whatever reasons you may find yourself here, as a crafter I appreciate the joy it brings to everyone and hope that it stays there forever and ever. Thank you!

Only in Honolulu…read more.. On a little Hawaiian island named O'ahu, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, is the World's Largest Wave Mural! Standing 5 stories high, this 14,000 square foot masterpiece was created by Hilton Alves from Brazil. It took him just 8 days to complete on October 26, 2013. However, 6 months of planning,150 gallons of paint, and $10,000 (for supplies) went into it! This Landmark in Kalihi, on the corner of Waiakamilo and Kalani Streets, reminds me of the Angel Wings project by Colette Miller. Colette has artwork all over the world, and so does Hilton Alves. While Ms. Miller reminds us that "We are the angels of the earth", Mr. Alves has more of an environmental theme and has educational projects which call upon children in our communities to get involved. To…read moreour 44th President of the United States and who haven't passed this mural located on busy Ward Ave just a block away from Kapiolani Blvd. Though sadly not quite sure the situation of the building it's painted on as it looks closed it would be a shame to lose another beautiful work of art to development that's been going around the Kaka'ako area. Born and raised right here in Honolulu is something that I'm still in awe and though how fitting it was as I drove past it today August 4th to our 44th President just after 4pm. Thank you!

There is poetry within these parklet walls…read more.. Everyone needs a moment to stop and get lost in your personal world to complete the need to breathe and enjoy the moment to unwind and relax. There are three public parklets on Waialae Ave and this particular one is fronting The Surfing Pig sidewalk which has three tables each are roomy enough to seat four I found my lightbulb go off as I passed it on my tour of Kaimuki errands...I had my favorite sammie from Sprout which I usually eat in my car since there isn't any seating provided and it can get messy. The other two are one fronting Kaimuki Community Park and the other fronting Juicy. I always passed it as it's usually filled with folks chilling never gave it a though that I can take a moment for myself here lol! The constant flow of traffic does create a breezy vibe where you certainly can get lost between the artsy colorful painted blocks with some limited seating in the area I'm grateful for the thoughtful process to have this for all to enjoy.
