What a find. Let me tell you when my partner said that we were taking a romantic weekend in Somerset I was a little bit concerned. But between the hiking trails and finding Summer Smiles Honey Farm the weekend was a blast. Possibly not romantic but a really great time. I was searching for Honey Farms in the area to pick up some local honey. When I found this Farm I saw that it was run by two women and I knew that I had to go there. Even though their hours that they were closed on Sunday I sent them a text just hoping that maybe for Memorial Day weekend they had different hours. I was pleasantly surprised, actually ecstatic, when I got a text back inviting us to the farm. Not only are they a honey farm they also run Airbnb. So if you're looking for a good time you can always rent out one of the air B&B rooms and then order their homemade food that is made in their kitchen on the farm. Honestly can you think of anything better than waking up and eating food that you were looking at or you can walk through. This was a great find. We also learn that they do pizza in their pizza oven that's outside, and music. I honestly cannot wait to go back. I purchase some honey, some bread, some eggs, and some of their butter. We then took a walk on the property with the dog and ended up in the barn meeting the rescued goats, pigs, and cow. Honestly it was great. Darci one of the owners, who showed us around, was absolutely wonderful. She was so warm and friendly and allowed us to see how she runs the farm all from a text message request to buy honey. That was the best part. Not only did she open up shop for us she talked to us for at least an hour and allowed us around the property to see how she runs the place. It was great. If you are looking for a place to stay while in Somerset stay here. They have four Airbnb rooms that look so fun and the menu that they cook up in their kitchen looks great. Just a sample the bread and the butter with some of that honey, yum yum. I can't imagine that anything that she cooks would taste bad. Try it out if you're around the area. You will not regret it. read more

I've been to Summer Smiles for a number of occasions and have always enjoyed the experience. The two farm-to-table dinners were excellent I'm terms of the culinary experience and the welcoming ambiance Darci and Amanda create for their guests. Last evening one of my little boys and I stopped by to pick up wood fired pizza and salad, and he enjoyed watching his pizza being cooked outside on a winter night, and while we were there he was able to pop in to see a blacksmithing class and go sample some honey. One trip for take out pizza that will inspire hours of conversation about bees, blacksmithing, and cooking with open flames. My kids devoured the cheese pizzas and the grown ups loved our pie with foraged mushrooms and homemade sausage. My salad with goat cheese and pickled beets was delightful. This is a very special place in the Laurel Highlands. Don't miss it! read more

The weather had been very rainy leading up to the big day and we were understandably concerned about the weather and the condition of the Farm. We ended up with a fabulous day and no mud in sight from all the rain! The mulch was a bit damp and we had to stick to the main path but it was in great shape! The ceremony took place in the chapel-the owners operated their golf cart for those guests who had physical challenges and that was appreciated. The reception was in the Barn and the staff did an excellent job of being available and attuned to needs as they arose. The bathroom were exceptionally clean. The farmhouse was included in their rental package and it was a lovely place for the girls and my daughter to get ready! She and her new husband stayed over at the farmhouse on their wedding night as well! The owners were great to work with and very attuned to the needs of all of the guests and the wedding party. I would definitely recommend The Farm on the Ridge!

I really…read morehesitate to share this wonderful place because it's a hidden gem and we cherish the remote location in the woods and the laid-back atmosphere. Anyway.....Chef Taz is an amazing artist, creating epicurean delights (what I as a foodie call, well, FOOD )! Chef rules over a secluded cafe in the middle of a private event venue, with the cafe being accessible from 5 to 8pm Tuesday thru Thursday. All of the extensive offerings are scratch prepared and served pleasing to both the eye and the palate. This is a very casual venue, outside tables during the season, indoor for inclement weather. Prices are very reasonable, portions are generous (and he's not trying to compensate for quality by quantity). Children are welcome, lottsa very close parking, there is a small bar serving prepared cocktails, beer and wine (Woodbridge at $6 a glass....DEAL). Very casual attire....shorts de rigue. Chef Taz is the perfect host, and once the rush abates in the back of the house, he will often times visit tables for feedback. The Staff provide attention to details and make you tired just watching them zip around. Great people ! Check out the Oak Lodge website for venue details....would be a most excellent venue for a wedding (booked into 2028 already). And Chef Taz holds sway over the event menu also. Arrive a bit early and wander the grounds (check out the glamping cabins), settle back with a libation of choice and await an amazing offering. You can thank me later. Kevin

I actually enjoyed the museum part of this very much. So much better than before when you showed up and just saw some outside areas with sparse descriptions. Inside there is an ongoing expansion of artifacts that are still trying to find their spots. Yes, it does feel a bit small in here, that is until you realize there is more downstairs as well. Upstairs you will go through a bunch of stuff. Some interactive exhibits, one in particular sticks out. One where you get pick up a telephone receiver and listen to the newscast from the day. It's a bit from a documentary, so it's not the whole thing, you get a snippet. The display cases are many in here, thoughtfully put together. There are uniforms worn on that day. Lunch pails that washed away underground. Tools. Newspaper articles from across the country. Photos. The most notable item upstairs is the capsule used that day to rescue the miners. And then you go downstairs. If you want you can take in a presentation. I did not do this, I did go through the area and look at the artifacts. The most awesome thing is the news van. This news van from WPXI Pittsburgh that covered the story as it was happening. This van wasn't only at the mine rescue site, it also covered the Flight 93 crash. (A little aside here, travel the few miles and visit the Flight 93 Memorial) Then go outside, if you haven't already. Not much has changed outside. The nine trees that were planted for the miners have gotten bigger, kind of overshadowing the nine boulders. It's quite beautiful.
