Ambiance was nice, but would've been nicer if they'd shut the door on a 45 degree evening. It wasn't freezing, but we were chilly. The waitstaff never checked on us. We had to walk to the front twice to get water. And we still got charged 20% gratuity for a party of 4. They do not disclose this on the menu, and I've always been forewarned at other restaurants when this is the case. FYI, they also charge a 3% surcharge for using a card. 2 dishes that were listed as "mild" or "sweet and savory" were very, very spicy. A couple in our party didn't want spice, so they thought they'd be safe with those options. After one bite one person was done with their meal. The containers that were brought to us for the ramen and udon soups did not have lids that fit. The waitstaff solution was to fold the cup in under the lid so there was a gap. This made it not even close to spill-proof and I didn't feel safe to drive with the soups (we had a bit of a longer drive ahead of us) When I asked for another option, they put the cup in a bag. We had the Basil Taoco and this was the highlight of the evening. The sauce was delicious and it had variety of vegetables. The Laksa had a much thicker broth than we are used to at the Malaysian restaurant we frequent. The shrimp were huge and tasty. It was good. The server visited us once to take our order gave helpful recommendations and someone else delivered the food and check. A quaint cozy establishment hidden in the back. Excellent service and even better tasting food!

Location: same building as "Dude and Dans" tucked in the back alley lot. Takeout: for some reason they charge a 15% mandatory gratuity takeout above $60 order. Shouldn't be the other way around to encourage customer to order more? Not less? Food: the food is very high quality. Indonesian cuisine is different than Thai not as sweet. Martabak here is crispy like wonton. Laksa is a signature curry especially in Singapore. Sambal cod the sauce was delicious. They messed up on our order gave us panang curry instead of Massaman and also forgot to add the extra side of rice I ordered. Oh MY! Literally "hidden" gem behind Dude and Dan's. Only 5 tables and it opens at 5 pm. One waitress and one cook/owner. The Thai food is the best I've ever had, and I've had a lot and in bigger cities. The entrees were generous size and I think next time I'll get the same two appetizers and could split an entree (but for the fact that he likes spicy and I don't). RE: spicy - there is a 5-point scale. My husband likes really spicy (so that his forehead sweats). He chose level 3 and it was perfect hotness (wouldn't want to go hotter). We each took home half our entree. I had pad Thai with chicken and he had Chilean sea bass which was expertly prepared "like silk" (he said). My pad Thai was the freshest I'd ever seen, full of colorful veggies. There is wine by the glass (only) and bottles (only) of sake. Two appetizers. Would rate 2.5 stars if available. Usually I try to refrain from negative reviews however was so disappointed with our experience in taking time to write this the next day. We walked away hungry and disappointed. Location/service: easy to park, hours vary based on what you see online (via Yelp) so we ended up having to wait 30 minutes before they opened. There's lots of cute shops to check out nearby though! There was only one waitress to handle two tables of two - service was fine, but nothing special. She did find a way for me to take my ice cream dessert home since they didn't have any containers specific for it. Ambiance is low key, industrial. Looks like it might have been a garage in a previous life. Food: the Lei appetizer roles were fresh and delicious. I ordered the PHO with veggie broth and chicken which was not served with any traditional accoutrements (jalapeño, bean sprouts, hoisin, etc.). Honestly, it was pretty bland with the broth not really having any flavor. I did enjoy that fresh broccoli and carrot chunks were served in the soup but overall for the price tag would not recommend. My husband ordered the ramen which comes with chicken in a beef broth (plus a boiled egg). The beef had way more flavor but was still nothing special. I ordered the green tea ice cream for dessert which was great(though not sure if it was made in house). For two of us to order meal with one appetizer and one dessert, it cost $60 - in my opinion 20% overpriced. I've tried most everything on the menu and Sumatera has some of the best (and authentic) Indonesian food I've had, outside of Indonesia.

We went to Sumatera on our first night in Springboat Springs and were sat right away. It's a cozy spot - not a lot of tables and when you show up it looks mostly like it'll be takeout but the dining room is to your left. The server was really nice but the actual service itself was pitifully slow. Our first appetizer came out about 15 min after ordering and then it was another 20 min before the next ones came. I saw a table next to us where everyone got their entrees except one person who didn't receive hers until everyone else had practically finished. As for the food - it was fine but not super special. The shrimp dumpling skins were too thick and the dumplings themselves were tiny - and only 5 for $13! The Pad Thai had a different sauce than usual and hardly any of it - very salty. We also ordered two other dishes but they weren't very memorable. All in all, I wanted to like this place but it just missed the mark too many times. Wouldn't recommend. read more

Our server/host jotted down our friend's name and phone number to notify us once our table was ready while we chilled at the bar next door. The wait is worth it if you're craving Asian food. Omg, amazing. The coconut milk made the dish a little sweet but the spiciness was no joke. The fried shrimp was so plump. The fish balls and tofu paired so well. I freaking loved this dish. My friends and I came to Sumatera while we were on a recent ski trip and it unexpectedly became the highlight of our trip. And to put things into perspective, we had just skied two days of over a foot of fresh powder. Sumatera is a unique cultural and dining experience that you are sure to enjoy. The chef is from the island of Sumatra and incorporates wonderful spices and flavors into all of her dishes. With that being said, the dishes can be very spicy so be warned. Ugly delicious is the best descriptive phrase for curry. Photos are hard to justify why you need to try it but once you do... the flavor bomb in your mouth is to die for. Came in during shoulder season so it was slow and not packed. I can only imagine during high season how hard it is to get into this place. Everything is homemade there. You can tell the owners care about their food. I haven't spring rolls in forever which they called lumpia. That bothered me bc lumpia are Filipino spring rolls but I digress. We got the laksa and fish curry. Both were DELICIOUS. Flavor bombs!! The laksa was a little short on seafood but I get it we're in the mtns. I appreciate that you're not going to force frozen seafood into the soup. The broth was creamy, thick and flavorful. They use vermicelli instead of lai fun. No biggie just a heads up to those who are used to laksa from SE Asia. The fish curry was one of the best we've ever had! Fish was flavorful as was the curry. Huge chuck of fish. Wonderful gem of a restaurant with really high-quality, excellent food. Be warned, take your normal spice preference down a notch or two since they don't mess around. I get the sense the chef may be a little "opinionated" about accommodating certain requests, so keep that in mind if you want to tweak anything. Found this place on the recommendation of a musician who was there for the bluegrass festival. He overheard us asking the front desk at the hotel for dining recommendations, and came up to us and said, you guys have got to try Sumatera. All we do is travel around the country and play music. We went into Sumatera with high hopes, extremely hungry. When walking in, the decor was nice and it was a cozy spot and the waiter was super nice. We ordered a pot of tea and waters, and then also all ordered an entree each. Under curries it lists it as: Curries: Panang and Massaman (mild), Yellow (medium), Green (spicy). So 2 of us ordered the mild curry "panang and massaman". We thought it was weird that they combined it like that, but thought it'd be cool to try as the whole restaurant seemed to be an Asian fusion. When the food came, the two of us got TWO entrees, meaning $18 for each entree. We told her that we wanted a single curry and on the menu, it's listed as ONE item based on the placement of the commas. She told us that it's actually two and just said sorry. We asked her if she thought it was weird that only 2 people at the table would order 2 entrees, and she said no and claimed people order 2 curries for themselves all the time - with the portion size, none of us believed that claim, and clearly multiple people made this mistake (and after us, we heard the waiter clarify which curry the table wanted behind us). After some back and forth, she finally got the owner to agree to give us a refund. Now to the food, the teriyaki chicken was good, fried rice and the stir fried noodles (kwa Wei) was good. However, the curry flavor was good but everything inside was inedible. It was all raw vegetables that were not cooked, even the potato was so crunchy, probably not even boiled for more than 1 minute. I got a total of 5 small pieces of chicken in my curry. A bowl of raw GIANT chunks of vegetables for $18 with a few pieces of chicken, not acceptable. And then, when we were paying, we saw the the pot of TEA was charged $15. Absolutely ridiculous. I never leave bad reviews for places, and this was such a traumatizing experience, I wanted to warn others. Go to Mai Thai down the road, they are FANTASTIC. read more

The curry was $28 so it was about twice the cost of what I've paid on average. The shrimp appetizer was $11 and only 5 pieces. Not a good value. The negatives are that I showed up Sunday and it was closed even though the hours said it was open on the site (they said it was someone's birthday). That was annoying. While Yelping and looking for restaurants in Park City, I came across Sumatera and we were so excited to dine here. Hehe the Google lady, brings you to the wrong place so be careful. My husband had to walk in the alley to find this place. When we found it, he said he walked right into the kitchen as he didn't see the dining room lol. He came back to the car and drove us here. The first thing that we noticed is that they do not have high chairs. So my husband had to go back to the car and haul the stroller in. Kedaya, our server was very nice and warm. We chose to have their Singapore noodles with shrimp. We asked that to be made mild. We also ordered their Gulai Ikan fish curry and asked for it to be made spicy. The Singapore noodles was so flavorful and absolutely delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The shrimp was huge and succulent. The fish curry on the other hand had to be one of the best fish curry we ever had. Every bite was packed with flavor. We both enjoyed it so much. We chose to end the night with their coconut ice cream and it was delicious, perfect ending to our delicious dinner. This is the BEST ASIAN food in Steamboat Springs...hands down! On Monday, Aug 20, we arrived at around 7 pm expecting to be seated immediately because it was a Monday, but we were mistaken. This was our 1st visit, so we did not know. We waited for a table for 30 minutes and it was a long wait. We were tempted to leave many times, but stayed. The hostess was very gracious and updated us on the next available table, while she was running around, as a server, bringing orders to tables inside, answering the phone, taking and fulfilling to-go orders, then finally sitting us inside, as the hostess again. She was SUPER GIRL!!! I am so impressed with her! When we entered the room where customers were seated, we realized why we waited so long. There were only 5 tables. Three tables were for 4, one table for 6 and one table for 2. While waiting for our table, we placed our order when the hostess said that the customers at the table for 2 were about to leave. We waited so long to be seated, we did not want to wait too long for our food. For our appetizer, we ordered LUMPIA -- fried rolls with cabbage, vermicelli noodles and carrots, served with fish sauce. For our meals, my husband had GULAI KHAN (Fish curry) -- halibut in spicy curry sauce with broccoli, carrots, tomatoes and baby bokchoy; and, I had LAKSA -- spicy coconut soup with rice noodles, shrimps, tofu and fish balls topped with carrots, cilantro, sprouts and cucumbers.
