A renovated church tucked into a sleepy street in the South End, this cultural center/performance…read morespace has retained some serious spirit, and has hosted a myriad of cool, underground community events. Because of the sheer openness and shape of the space are acoustics are solid. The pulpit was converted into a sizeable stage with a broad audience area where the pews once were. There's also excellent views from the expansive two tiered balcony. When I first visited for Soul Revival in 2001 (a now defunct deep house party) the ceiling was painted midnight blue with stars, and people came together once a month to relive the reverence of its foundation through movement and sound. It was consistently one of the most beautiful experiences of my lifetime. Keepin' Jeebus proud, folks. I only wish they kept the organ.

Located near the center of city sits a cool place to check out if you are looking to bring alive your newest project. Just above a cool antique furniture store, they have studios areas and bays, as well as an outside in case you need a different look. They also have a make up area and a nice little lounging area. Very nifty. They also have a basement with an awesome dark and gritty feel, perfect for those edgier shoots and more. There is no limit to what you want to do. Boston Studio Photography can provide it. The staff was incredibly helpful, friendly and went the extra mile, especially when I had to reschedule several times. They were also really helpful setting up the lights. As far as the lights specifically, they were fairly easy to use and great for our particular shoot. They knew their stuff and were very accommodating. Renting this space for a couple of hours runs a few hundred dollars, but mind you, that includes lights and a decent hourly rate, depending on where you want to shoot. Its all incredibly reasonable, especially since the staff themselves are photographers as well. You feel at ease and the price of renting is definitely worth it. It was a great experience renting there and I foresee many projects of mine being shot there in the future. Boston Studio Photography is a great studio.

Paul and Younes are great managers, the space is wonderful -- providing natural light and the artificial light, access to a rooftop and urban building with fire escapes, standard studio and basement /exposed brick settings in which to shoot. The whole space is very accessible and very affordable. Younes and Paul have also offered group photoshoots from time to time, which have given both photographers and models a chance to shoot with a variety of people in the varied settings of the studio in different themes. It has been tremendously helpful to my growth as a photographer to be part of BSP, and I hope you take the opportunity to be part of it - either as a photographer, a client looking for a photoshoot or a model or makeup/hair/styling professional working on shoots here.

I loove NGMA! This is a wonderful music academy for a beginner or a learned musician. They also…read morework with kids and they're great! The kids learn amazingly fast it's incredible. They have a program were you can come with your friends and you can learn together and you have an hour of private and an hour of ensemble. You can join an ensemble of course, if your friends aren't joining in. After a few weeks or months, you pass the first level and you have a concert, and it's really cool. Or you can just have private classes and those are great too. They teach all kinds of instruments. You should definitely go there and give it a try! The teachers are amazing and so talented, they have a wide range of experience in all genres of music. You will surely find this place a fit when you want to learn an instrument. Anyway, this is my experience at NGMA, I started taking weekly private classes on Feb/2010. Then I moved into an ensemble group, I stayed there for a few months learned a lot. It was really cool playing in a band, we were all at the same level and we all made mistakes playing so I didn't feel intimidated. Then I decided to go back to private classes again, and that's what I've been doing up until now. Give them a try, You'll love it!

The rotating roster of musicians are all professionals. Some, such as Elizabeth Blumenstock, Baroque violinist or Haldan Martinson (principal second violin of the Boston Symphony Orchestra) are local gems in their own right. Sarasa concerts are held fall through spring at small, intimate venues (Harvard-Epworth in Harvard Yard and First Parish Church in Lexington) where you can meet the musicians afterwards at the reception. The 8pm Saturday concert means you can get dinner at Harvard Sq. beforehand. It makes a nice night out. The Lexington concerts are in the afternoon. The group is also unique for doing outreach concerts at juvenile lockups for years and years and now also do residencies in which they work with the teens to make music together. Amazing classical music with heart, what else could you want?

So despite that, the guide gave it his all, kept us inundated with facts and stories about the house and its former occupants, tailoring the tour to our questions as they emerged. I know nothing about the Phillips House before the tour. No--it has nothing to do with the Salem Witch Trials! It's just an old historic town that is completely perfectly preserved, it was owned by one of the oldest and wealthiest families in Salem. I'm not an architecture junky, more a history fan, but this place thoroughly kept my attention and was very enjoyable. I particularly like that the docent took the time to tour us through the garage as well. If you're interested in history, architecture, beautiful houses or all of the above I highly recommend adding the Phillips House to your Salem itinerary.
