The minute you step foot in the door, you feel a wave of calm wash over you. Maybe they practice feng shui, I have no idea. What made an impression on me next were the owners. The owners are young, upbeat, friendly, and very welcoming. They introduced themselves, and then Kristan, (one of the owners) took me on a tour of their facility. I was impressed by all of the different options they had. They can create custom blankets, blown glass jewelry, and different types of earns based on the connections they have in the industry. There is quite the variety of caskets to choose from as well. They have everything from your traditional caskets to eco-friendly caskets that are biodegradable. I went through the websites of several mortuaries/funeral homes in the Iowa City area, and Gay $ Ciha immediately stood out. Websites for these businesses are always set up through these web design companies with stock photos and general language, and then the business s supposed to go in and personalize it, but many places don't even bother to alter much since it comes "good enough" as is. Not only had Gay & Ciha taken the time to customize their website, the language they used invoked a feeling of transparency, sincerity, and care. There are certain things a FH must disclose to a consumer legally, and many places bury that in their marketing material, while these guys highlighted it and explained it. Most people wouldn't know what to look for, but I do, and I instantly liked what I saw. Once I contacted them, my hunches about them were correct, and my personal contact with them absolutely met my high expectations. I dealt mostly with Dan, who was prompt to respond, kind, and quick to provide anything I requested. My Auntie and her daughter had suffered a major tragedy when my cousin and I were very young, Auntie's 14 year old son drowned in a swollen creek during a major storm, and his body was not recovered right away. This left them both with a deep fear of death and anything related. (Clearly, the experience had the opposite effect on me, the death impacted our small family tremendously, and as a 6 year old at the time, I never forgot the fear and aversion from the mortuary my aunt developed, and I became interested in how to make that a different experience, which led me to this work.) I didn't explain that to Dan, but I did impress that my cousin wouldn't be the most communicative and may need some gentleness, and she received it, no questions asked. When I came to Iowa from California to help settle my Auntie's affairs, I was told by my family that I would be taking half of her cremated remains back with me....but I was told on a weekend, 2 days before my flight. I panicked-flying with cremated remains involves a permit and other paperwork, I had no idea how quickly that could be done there as every state has its own system. Dan and another female employee, whose name I regrettably didn't catch, didn't blink an eye, and the morning I left for Des Moines, I was personally delivered everything I needed through zero effort on my part . I am eternally grateful for the compassionate, efficient, and honest service my family received from Dan and his staff after the loss of our sole matriarch. When you work in the industry, there is a strong need to "care for your own" and when you can't? You want whoever does come to be someone you can trust like you'd trust yourself, someone coming from the same perspective of care that you do. There is an inside knowledge of what CAN happen, and it's so important to know that your loved one is in safe and respectful, ethical, and empathetic hands. I hold a deep gratitude to Gay & Ciha for allowing me that comfort and piece of mind, allowing me to tend to my family and stepping into my role as the new matriarch? Yikes! Big shoes to fill from a tiny woman that left a large legacy of love. I wouldn't have wanted her in any other hands outside of my own.

My loved one looked NOTHING like themselves, the morticians/funeral directors couldn't be bothered to dress up for the services (the man wore no tie & his wife wore what looked like a sundress), WE had to call THEM a week and a half after the services to get our loved one's cremains... the list goes on and on. This is not the same Schroder's it used to be. It is painfully obvious that Steve, the former proprietor, is no longer involved. I will never - and I mean NEVER - trust them with a member of my family again.
