Brasil is a place where meat is king. Specifically, bovine (cow) meat. Most certainly, there are the myriad of churrascarias that you can go to indulge in an endless binge of carnivorous gluttony, but the prices of eating at such places today in São Paulo isn't so affordable as it used to be. There are also times when you probably just want one splendid piece of cow for a decent price. i thought such a place doesn't exist here, but thankfully i am wrong
Enter Sujinho. It is a old-timer in the São Paulo restaurant scene and has been feeding the stomachs of paulistanos for decades. Located a few blocks north of Avenida Paulista on Rua da Consolação, it actually has three separate buildings on the same corner (Consolação and Rua Maceió/Matias Aires). One of the buildings (on the Maceió side) is actually their burger joint (Hamburgeria do Sujinho)
The portions here are quite large. If you opt to order the non-grilled dishes, it will probably feed two to three adults
But for me, what has my interest are the main grilled portions of yummy meat. It is probably best-known for its costela - a almost dinosaurish portion of beef rib. You would do well to order this one, since most beef connoisseurs will agree that meat near the ribs are the tastiest bits. The first time i had the costela, i was in meatgasms. Even more so, seeing that i'd pay under 20 bucks (~R$40) for it. i also love their alcatra; robust flavour and definitely a big-sized portion for around the same price as the costela
Along with the meat, i love their bread and cabbage couvert. The cabbage gives a nice cripsy and cool contrast to the heap of juicy protein
One double-edged sword about this place is that it is open til the wee hours of the night (4 am, if i remembered correctly). Whilst it is awesome that you can get a wonderful piece of meat late at night, the area isn't as wonderful around those hours. Other Yelpers have mentioned that they've seen streetwalkers frequent the place during these hours, but i have yet to see one in the restaurant. Nonetheless, it's worth remembering that eating here after 11pm will be at your own discretion lol
Another caveat that is definitely worth repeating is that Sujinho does NOT accept plastic. Cash only
There is also a second location on the corner of Avenida Ipiranga and Rio Branco (not too far from the original location), but it is even more seedier ground and it closes earlier (12am?)
With all that said in mind, do yourself a favour and eat the costela at Sujinho read more
