Community United Against Violence (CUAV) is a multicultural Diverse.. Non Ageist organization working to end violence against and WITHIN the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) communities. We believe that in order to end homo/bi/transphobia, we must confront all forms of oppression, including racism, sexism, ageism, classism, and ableism.
CUAV offers a 24-hour confidential, multilingual crisis line, free counseling, legal advocacy, and emergency assistance (hotel, food, and transportation) to survivors of hate and domestic violence. (Please note: an intake appointment must be scheduled to qualify for emergency services.) CUAV uses education as a violence prevention tool through our speakers bureau, youth program, and education and outreach program. Look Yelpers I could have come here..
I will be going for training later this month. I am going to Volunteer for the Speaker's Bureau. I will be going to High Schools, Middle Schools and oh my gosh possibly to where the real pequenos are....Elementary School... Oh the Terrors!! hahahaa I love kids. I did not work in Barnes Family Daycare for years for nada.
I also have Early Childhood Education Credits. I could easily work in a daycare but I no longer have the patience for that. I am Hap Palmer, Ella Jenkins, and Harold and The Purple Crayon out.
I wanted to be a Child Psychiatrist at one time in my life back in 1986. I volunteered @ Langley Porter. I also was a Group Home Attendant for The Catholic Charities. I met a troubled teenage girl who used to walk by my house every day with her drug-addicted mother.
I went to my interview yesterday @ 4:00pm with Connie. She is a bundle of blue eyed positive intelligent energy. I am such a "Cry Baby". Do you remember that Johnny Depp Movie?
I got alittle emotional. I had to give my spiel on why I would be a good fit for the program. You know... I knew I was gay when..... I came out or starting coming out then.
It was when I started thinking about the Violence that has happened to me. Here was a woman who was actually listening. It was cathartic. It was part intake, part reminiscing about old time Dyke San Francisco.

Founded in 1979, CUAV is the nation's first LGBTQQ anti-violence organization. Our mission is to prevent and respond to violence against and within our diverse LGBTQQ communities. We accomplish this through peer-based counseling, direct assistance, education and outreach, grassroots organizing, and policy advocacy.
Born in the wake of the tragic murders of Harvey Milk and George Moscone, our early focus on addressing hate violence was expanded five years later to encompass domestic violence as well. CUAV is one of the first agencies in the country to realize the gravity of domestic violence in our LGBTQQ communities.
We continue to play a seminal role in local and national coordinated efforts to increase community safety.
The Speakers Bureau is always looking for new volunteer speakers. For information about the next training Feb 2008, please contact Connie at connie@cuav.org.
