If you've stayed in some nice B&Bs, you probably think you know what this will be like -- but this is several notches better: a big step up in luxury, cleanliness, beautiful setting, and the attentiveness of the hosts. We stay at nearby Ocean House frequently, and of course that's lovely and luxurious. But the accommodations at the Margin Street Inn are every bit as good... and a *lot* less expensive. It was no more than 10 minutes away from Newport Vineyards and less than 20 minutes away from downtown Newport. Both were easy drives or Uber rides. The inside of the house is absolutely gorgeous and feels like it's been recently renovated. We stayed in the Catherine room, which slept all eight of us comfortably. It was very spacious had a large bathroom and it's own little kitchen. The innkeeper and his partner were phenomenal! They were so helpful throughout the whole process of booking. The house was so well-maintained and we were there when we arrived and asked if there was anything they could help us carry up. They took care of breakfast the next morning, which was absolutely delicious and were just such genuinely sweet people. All of the girls were very impressed. I definitely see this as another girls weekend getaway or couple getaway. It is on a farm, so the outside is very farm like you'll smell the animals and you'll see the cornfield, but it truly adds to the quaintness of the place and you don't smell inside.

In Jamestown, there were notes everywhere, spelling out specific rules to the place. Owner was unfriendly at times. In Jamestown, it felt like I was staying at someone's house that didn't want me to be there. At the Admiral Dewey Inn, I was welcomed as a guest and trusted to be a considerate guest. This made all the difference. Right next to South Kingstown beach and in proximity to everything. Block Island ferry a short drive away. Showers are amazing. Admiral Dewey Inn provides a Summer paradise. I will definitely be back next year.

That being said, this was a good place to stay in Newport, very centrally located, and really allowed us to walk to almost everything. Our room was good & we had a little porch/deck right outside the room, so we could sit outside when we got back in our own private little space. Breakfast was very good. Here's one little nugget that we learned from talking to the locals... they don't go to the harbor area, they stick either to Thames or the Broadway area. Having never been past the lobby and reading mixed reviews, we didn't have high expectations. However, we were pleasantly surprised by this lovely inn! It was very, very quiet here in the dead of winter. We almost felt we had the whole place to ourselves! Parking was plentiful & easy, just steps from the lobby. We were quickly checked in and were assigned Room #9. What a lovely, warm, comfortable room! Furnished with fun, painted vintage pieces, our room had fours windows and was flooded with sunlight. We love a bright, sunny room, though those who prefer dark might be annoyed. We found it to be perfectly clean & fresh. At sunset, I climbed up to the fourth floor to check out the view. While freezing cold, it was a pretty view with a perfect peek-a-boo of the sun going down this time of the year. The antiquated heater was pretty loud and we wondered why it wasn't replaced by the mini-split which provided air conditioning. After a good night sleep, the kettle in the room allowed us to enjoy a beverage as we lounged a bit before heading down for breakfast. While just a light continental, it was a lovely room with nice, fresh offerings and perfect to hold us over until brunch later. Is this place perfect? No - it's an old building which has been moved & has quirks and wear. Is it fancy? No - not at all. Even the staff seems totally casual. But it's warm, comfortable, friendly & fun. There are also lots of public spaces in the lodge itself. The homemade breakfast was delicious each day and very unique. Our room was very clean and bright. Ivy Lodge is very close to the historic mansions and a few were within walking distance. It is also close to some amazing dining.
